Danpod Posted June 21, 2008 Posted June 21, 2008 The season starts today, friends! Let's try to keep up with the scores. Just post them up when they're available and we'll organize as we go along. treblemaker Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 So is it going to be possible for those corps in the high 50's low 60's to catch up later in the season? Quote

Madison was behind every corps last year, save for Pioneer at one point in time. They made a rather nice comeback and finished up the season in 15th place, which is pretty respectable seeing as how their show wasn't very readable for a very large portion of the season. Quote
bandnerd1230 Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 Did anyone go to this event? Because I heard that there were no judges on the field!? What's going on with that? And did any shows surprise you? Quote

And did any shows surprise you? Due to the economy, on-field judges (Visual Performance Individual & Brass) will not be used until July 4th. After the 4th, the full panel of on-field and press box judges will be used. Corps are still being judged by the judges in the press box (except for Color Guard)---Music General Effect, Visual General Effect, Visual Performance Ensemble, & Music Performance Ensemble. As for Percussion, I don't know if the judge was located on the field or in the press box. Quote From DCI's website: Adjudication changes will save more than $50,000 After directing a thorough review of operating budgets and enacting spending cuts in many areas, the DCI Board of Directors voted earlier this week to adjust the organization’s competitive adjudication system during the first part of the 2008 DCI Summer Tour, reducing the number of adjudicators to five for all World Class events prior to July 4. This decision is expected to save the organization some 20 percent of a projected budget shortfall. Open Class directors made a similar move at their annual meeting in January, also reconfiguring their judging assignments at several early-season competitive events. The use of a five judge panel will happen at some 30 events being staged prior to July 4. The usual adjudication slate for a regular-season contest consists of eight judges, with major regional events utilizing an additional percussion judge, for a total of nine. New rules in force this season call for as many as 11 adjudicators participating in World Championship events. “With an average savings of more than $500 per person for travel and expenses, we expect to realize a significant savings from this initiative over the first two weeks of the season,” Leide said. “Now we’re dealing with things like fuel, which affects not only the corps and their ability to get down the road, but our travel expenses for event staff, and for the expense to our fans as well. All of these variables impact our operation and are on the table for discussion at any time. We’ve done everything possible to ensure that we’re not going to affect the quality of service and support to the corps and the amount of money we generate on their behalf.” Quote

For example, the judging system for the first half of the season will not have a dedicated Brass or Colorguard caption. Those corps who have phenomenal brass or colorguard sections will not truly be rewarded until they have their own judge to critique them. You should see scores separate later in the season. In the meantime, corps will have to be careful to self-critique those sections, as they may not have the comprehensive feedback they usually get. Quote

However, they are working with a depleted colorguard. Although there is no Guard Caption until July, I'm sure it is hurting their visual scores some. They did improve their scores tonight, which is a plus, but you have to keep in mind that they weren't competing against as many corps as they were in their previous show. As long as they keep working on the show and hopefully add a few more guard members, they'll do just fine. Quote

And last night they only had 10 guard instead of 12 on the field. 2 were injured or something. Quote

mbui Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Regarding the two corps out west, SCV & Blue Devils, I heard both of their shows.... They're hot. I really like the groove at the beginning of BD's show and SCV's drumline....yeah. Wickedly awesome. Quote

It's been a while since I've followed up on rules in DCI but if I'm not mistaken.... In DCI, ties are broken for first place only. If there are corps that are tied at say 8th place then the corps will remained tied at 8th place. How do they break the tie for first? They use the sum of ordinal placement for each sub-caption...very similar to UIL's scoring system at the Area & State level for marching band. For example: Group A: 1, 2, 1, 4, 6, 3 = 17 Group B: 2, 3, 2, 1, 2, 2 = 12 Group B wins. You know how it goes. If there's still a tie after the ordinal rankings, corps with the most number of caption wins is declared the champion.. The tie-breaker rule rewards the performance and corps that is the most consistent. Quote
