  1. We have a freshman in the Georgetown Band. I don’t know if Georgetown typically does well in these competitions but I know this band has dedication and heart ❤️! But they’re notably younger than many of the bands I’ve watched this season. Any predictions?

  2. I am sad that I am going to miss this contest. My brother in-law is a composer. We are going to see his movie in NYC with my sister and him. Solid line up for this show and it should be a great contest.

  6. Well after BOA Austin, I have to admit, Lake Travis may even be as high as 3rd. Nice job ya'll! Lots of bands with potential for finals. My predictions would have to be: 1. Vandergrift 2. Vista Ridge 3. Westlake 4. Lake Travis 5. Brandeis 6. Del Rio 7. Stevens 8. Harlan 9. Judson 10. Brennan I think 1-2 could flip, 3-4 could flip, 5 is pretty set, Del Rio and Stevens will for sure be in finals, and after that I'm kinda guessing. Also saw Marshall's show and it made me very happy. Color guard is performing beautifully as are their low brass and woodwinds. When Marshall did Phantom in 1990 it was something really special and I'm glad to see it again.

  7. The comment is a general statement and display of placement trends between prelims and finals, not some kind of subtweet. This kind of behavior happens in both BOA and DCI, just a few months ago people were arguing BD doesn't deserve a championship title and the judges have no skill. In both activities behavior such as this is unsavory and unnecessary to both spectators and performers. Like all participants on this forum, everyone is entitled to their opinion and everyone is able to respond to such opinions whether that's "direct" or a general statement like my previous comment. The world continues to spin on its axis no matter what the judges decide and at the end of the day the activity is about the students involved, not us on these forums. I hope you have the day you deserve and that you enjoy the rest of your weekend! As Courtney said on the field, back to bands! 🥰 Edit: Yes, I did react with a laugh and shortly removed it. I full recognize and admit it was an immature action. It's important to practice as you preach and said action was unnecessary for something so trivial. I apologize if you were upset by it!

  8. 100% agree with this, during my first contest last season (HEB) we had a very rough finals run and it was really disheartening to see all of the speculation about how we'd do late season. A band is allowed to have a run that's not locked in, and it's better for that to happen sooner rather than later. I have no doubt Leander will bounce back by the end of the season- even after a rough showing at Austin last year they managed to deliver an outstanding product and I definitely think this year won't be too different. Tl;dr band is fun and scores are just the opinions of some judges who are given the misfortune of having to rank/rate some pretty incredible bands.

    2022 BOA Katy (Oct. 1)

i want to point out that CTJ is one of exactly 2 bands i think are actually pretty consistently putting out progressive, forward-thinking shows at the high school level. that style of having a lot of music or ideas in a single movement is very distinct, very different, and it's haaard to imagine a CTJ show without it. it's that kind of fun, you never know what's next style.

    2022 BOA Katy (Oct. 1)

Yes, the persona you adopt here is quite interesting, compared to elsewhere. I'll say that much! I admit, I do sort of like the attention, even if it's not all positive. Big fish, miniscule pond. Actually, more like average fish, miniscule pond. I think the CTJ program is astonishing, even if I level somewhat sharp-ish criticism against some of the design choices and clarity issues, even if I seem like I'm harping on them. You know, every observer has that thing that they're most obsessed with. You get a Richard Saucedo tape, you're going to hear a lot about tone quality. Others' pet peeve might be rhythmic accuracy. Mine is clarity. Of course, CTJ does virtually everything at the highest level, but that's also why I hold them to a higher standard in this random internet commentary than I hold other bands. I'm sure you've noticed I criticize the top groups much more than the others. It's actually because they're awesome, and they're all capable of winning a National Championship. And I am so nitpicky and so eager, because I know they're all so close to that level of competitive success, and in many ways have already achieved it. But that's all competitive stuff. Ultimately, that's not the most important aspect of band, which is about building character and making positive, life-long memories. I can tell you, as someone who was once a member of a band that won a lot, it's not the thing you'll cherish most from your time in band. Overall, I don't think anything I say should be taken too seriously, or viewed as especially malicious -- not usually anyway. Everybody has opinions on this forum, whether it's about singing or whatever. Ultimately we're not the judges, so it doesn't matter much. My own opinion, Jarrett, is that this CTJ show is near the tippy top. You and your kids are going to have another amazing, extremely successful season. And it will be well-deserved.

    2022 BOA Katy (Oct. 1)

it was a liiittle defensive, but i appreciated it. i know it probably sucks to read criticism of the CTJ program online by mostly a bunch of nobodies. i think CTJ's shows are always a good time, and sometimes puuuure, amaaazing, bliiissful magic, like in 2017. plus they actually CHALLENGE themselves, unlike, uhhh, some others... who will NOT be named... but "baby"? how dare u! hahaha. i was on the field when u were awarded that BOA scholarship in 2002. well assuming that Jarrett Lipman was u and not some other one. hahahaha.

  12. I haven't seen CTJ so I'm not commenting on them, but in general I'm not a fan of vocalists in marching band performances.

  13. So cool to see the CFISD representation with 5 schools here! I saw a clip from a Cy-Woods rehearsal from a little over a week ago, and they looked nice and sounded very good for where they are in the season. This year's show is definitely quite a bit different from what they've done historically, but it seems like they've adapted to it well. I'm hoping them to have a similar showing here to BOA Conroe last year, where they placed unexpectedly high in both prelims and finals. I haven't seen any of the other schools in the district this year, but Cy-Fair had a good season last year as well, and Cy-Park has been doing very nicely for only being a few years old. I'm interested to see how Ranch and Falls will do- it's been a while since I remember seeing them compete with big name programs. Hopefully it's a sign that they're on an upwards trend as well!
