Wow congratulations to Memorial! And Argyle, and independence! Two first time finals(Argyle only bc first year as 5A), and memorial. No reedy after 2 years of them, as well as heritage after many years of them making it to finals. Congratulations to all! Finals will be great for sure!

I’m here for a bit. It’s crazy windy! The bands are fighting to keep props and flags and hats under control. I hope it calms down for finals tonight.

  21. I feel like the caliber of most likely finalist bands here is a lot more matched than in other areas which could make for some interesting results. Looking at BOA Conroe prelims results, Tompkins had rather high performance scores comfortably in finals, something that tends to be well rewarded at UIL shows. Now I know that BOA sheets and UIL sheets are different, hence why I'm focusing more on the performance captions. Similarly, at the Katy marching fest, JET won the music caption over bands like 7L, Friendswood and Jordan. And at the same contest, Jordan won the visual caption over those same groups. This show will be all about who puts out the most exciting, but more importantly, spotless and uniform show. There is no room for error and I know there are quite a few groups who are capable of taking one of those top (hopefully) 5 spots to state. With that being said I would say that Cy Fair and Bridgeland are the most likely groups to go to state, followed by Cy Woods, Seven Lakes and Jordan. However, upsets by JET, Tompkins, Katy, Cinco Ranch and Jersey Village are absolutely possible. Best of luck to all those performing this weekend at games, shows and region contests!!

  22. Wow. That’s incredibly rude. You’re entitled to your opinion, but to be insulting isn’t necessary. Some of those kids read this forum you know.

  24. The schedule isn’t reverse prelims placement, it’s random draw. Richland could be in any place for all we know or any other band. The prelims placement aren’t revealed till after finals. It’s gets confusing but it’s all random draw

  27. Yes, I believe it is reverse order. Can’t wait to get there! Hope the winds can die down some.

  28. Now that I've seen it, I'm actually rather impressed they're able to change the height of most of their tosses on the fly like that. I'm not sure I have that level of control. After watching it, I'd be very surprised if TWHS doesn't come out on top here, even if the closer isn't clean. This is an excellent production. But it is UIL, so you never know.

  29. Is that the reverse order they finished in?

  30. I believe this contest does a reverse prelims placement for finals order.

  31. I'm usually not a fan of Carmel shows but I do like this one. I love this piece from Barber and Carmel does a really good job with it. Musically they have their dynamic changes mastered to a tee and do so with very balanced sounds. As for Avon, they've got a harder book so it's not quite as polished as Carmel, but I appreciate the difficulty. It's pretty close between these two, but I think Carmel will win the super regional. By Grand Nationals though it could be a different story.

  32. I went to Region 2 UIL, and Lewisville was really good. Great overall sound, clean marching, I didn't hear anyone sticking out. I think they're building up to that level.

Ouch, tough draws for Keller and SLC. Both should still make finals, though I'm a little less assured about SLC this year.

  35. Imagine what it will be like if Lewisville HS improves to the same level ? Their two directors are new (2 years in) and both came from one of the FloMo feeder middle schools.

  36. is anyone else going to be at this contest? I will be there recording all of prelims, and possibly finals if my camera survives :). Can't wait to see who advances to finals and to State! My top 12- Top 3 will go to Hebron, Flower Mound, and Marcus 4, 5, and 6, I would say could be between plenty of bands, but the main ones that I feel have the highest chance of taking it are Wylie, Wylie East, and spot 6 being up for grabs between Rockwall, Rock Hill, McKinney Boyd, Lewisville (They are the Dark Horse for me in this Area), Prosper, and Sasche. The rest of finals- This one could be a toss up as it has shown in the past that there are bands who are worthy for finals that end up getting placed in spots you wouldn't expect. I would say that Plano East, Rockwall Heath or McKinney are the three I would see making it into finals if one or more bands above didn't do as well. Bands that possibly won't make finals, but could be in the top 15, the only two I see making it into the top 15 is Allen and Rowlett.

I was there last night and I don't think that's unpopular. I have them definitely in finals and a real shot at being one of the six going to state.

  38. The length of a show has no effect on a band's score. It's all about the content and performance quality of the show. UIL just has a shorter time limit than BOA so some bands may choose to make shorter shows during UIL state years or just cut out parts of their show for UIL performances.

  39. everyone makes mistakes you don't need to keep looking for fights and putting all the blame on the director. no one was at fault. that is a very immature way to look at the situation. also it literally says the kids were never told a set time to start, just when the drum majors put them to set. there was not enough time to inform the entire band of a change. it was a gamble that they didn't have any control over. if it is what it is there wouldn't be people taking sides on the matter, we're all definitely upset, but the points you make don't correspond with what actually happened if you're simply going off what you "believe" to be true.

  41. As an individual who has heard the from primary source and is extremely frustrated and disappointed about the situation, here is exactly what happened to Wakeland. yes the show is more than 8 minutes so they planned to start during announcements. the macbook they use to run everything decided to reboot as announcements were going off they decided to wait for it to finish hoping for the best unfortunately they went overtime by about 22 seconds initially they were sent home with all 1's but the morning after it was changed to all 2's hence, disqualification Although this is very upsetting, there is nothing anyone could have done about it and it was a simple unfortunate event. There is no one to blame and Wakeland is very grateful for the opening at Duncanville and the opportunity to end their season with a couple more chances to perform and have fun. notes: wakeland has never had a set time to start they always start when the director calls up the drum majors. (which at UIL is almost always during announcements), the director was caught up in pulling a tarp off the field that was being blown away whilst the macbook was also rebooting, and yes a failsafe would have been nice but wakeland has never really had/needed one before and the most unexpected things took place. it was an unfortunate circumstance all around and because of that no one has any right to point fingers especially with how upset wakeland already is.

  42. its not an excuse. i'm not trying to justify anything for them. also, the show was never too long, it would've fit in the allotted time if not for the malfunction, and if you watch their previous performances, they're able to fit it in 8 minutes. should they have cut it short? probably. saying equipment malfunction isn't a legitimate excuse is just straight up irrational. should the band be to blame for a malfunction and just have it count as illegitimate? also your 8 minute 20 second meme doesn't work if their show isn't even that long. the main flaw in your argument is that you keep saying their show is "too long" and the director should've cut it short when that isn't the problem. maybe you should show some respect to the people in the band and the directors who've put in all the work just to have a performance denied from them, and prevent them from seeing people online invalidate their achievements due to personal bias? it's okay to have an opinion but no need to get so hostile over such a small matter (i shouldn't be talking i guess but too late now right?). it sounds to me like you're a parent of a wakeland student, so what do you gain by pinning all the blame on their director? they definitely are learning from this experience and will probably learn to cut their show short in the future if a similar situation ever happens again, but at the end of the day it simply isn't their fault, and rules are rules, so they won't be advancing to area no matter what anyone on here says. it's a bummer we won't be getting to see wakeland (win) at area b, but i'll definitely be looking out for them at duncanville. it's definitely a good choice for next weekend for them.

    Fair Judges

Westtexasparent just stop. You’re digging deeper. This is not an objective sport. It is highly subjective. There is no way to have 2 people with different life experiences to agree 100%. It is what it is. But to complain because you disagree just feeds into the I have to always be right mentality. Guess what. It doesn’t work that way. Each judge gives their own opinion. I was an alternate to the All State band twice. Did that make me a bad player? No. It made me work harder the next year. By your logic I should have just complained until the process was changed to fit my beliefs. Again it didn’t define me. I got over it and worked harder.

Let’s clear up a few things: 1. Props falling down is not the students fault. A prop malfunction should never dictate whether a band advances or not. If we went by malfunction of technology or props as a metric for advancing then some of the best bands in the history of UIL or BOA would have had their seasons caught short at the region level. I believe Cedar Parks front stands all fell down during region 2019, they won state championship. Using props as an excuse for why a band should not have advanced is an absurd metric. 2. Being loud \=/ Playing Well. Being loud is not better, see Carmel 2018. Not Texas loud but with a precise crisp balance. See Vandegrift 2018, very loud but lacking in balance in their San Antonio performances (They remedied this by UIL and cleaned up enough to medal.) A group is better to be quiet but balanced than loud and drowning out the woodwinds or front ensemble of the group. Also if you “couldn’t hear the band” the judges all the way up in the prsss boxes definitely could, check your ears. 3. UIL judges rarely look at colorguard. As much of a disservice as it is to colorguards even if a band had the most flawless or horrendous colorguard it doesn’t matter. See bands where the colorguards ability slightly does overtake the band like Eastlake and you don’t really see a difference in their visual scores because of it. 4. Scores are all over the place. Let’s take a deeper look. • Frenship who you insinuate was possibly impossible to hear and a mess had every single music judge putting them in the top 2, so the judges definitely had no issues hearing them at all. •Are scores all over the place? Sure. Let’s take a deeper look. Every single band had at least 1 outlier in their scores. Sure. That is no need to so rudely and disrespectfully talk about these programs though. Your rudeness has constituted rudeness on my end. Stop talking so much unnecessary **** about band programs and spread the **** love. I’m sorry but I care about band too much to have kids potentially reading these disgusting comments. Good day.
