First “Band” to take the field this morning are the Rocking Black Bird Band from Birdville ISD. They are performing as an exhibition band. They are a bit pitchy. Formations strong. Flying towards to South endzone.

It’s Hebron and everyone else. The real deal. From moment they take the field…the hero solo…chills…a few uncharacteristic rifle drops and squeaks. Does not matter. Un flipping real! Take my money, take my children.

Btw I wanted to compliment SLC’s flute soloist on SLAYING his solo I mean OMG his doubling-tonguing, quality of timbre in the upper register, and dexterity were stunning! It was so professional

  11. …moving past the negativity, glad to see that many groups are reaching above and beyond today! To be honest, Keller kind of took my breath away at Prosper finals, and hearing that they are at an entirely new level is all the more exciting.

  12. Here's my predictions just based on who I think will make finals (not doing rankings just because I haven't seen nearly everyone). This is just random order not where I think they'll place. Hebron Flower mound Marcus Wylie Wylie East McKinney Boyd Prosper Rock Hill Plano East Lewisville Byron Nelson Rockwall I literally didn't know who Byron Nelson was until today, but I thought their show was amazing, on par or better than Rock Hill who was before them (probably 2nd in their block below Wylie), and could genuinely see them being a dark horse to make state.

I’m a Bell alumni. If you want to hear my take, Coppell has consistently improved in recent years to become one of the best bands in the state. Not to say that Bell isn’t, they’re a legendary program, but they aren’t currently at the level that Coppell is, which is why I believe that they are still one of the frontrunners to be the area champion. Am I upset that Bell isn’t the best? No. Why would I be? Even if Bell isn’t the best marching band in the state, which is a subjective title by the way, they are definitely back on track to the level of success they experienced in 2019. And I’m more than pleased with that.

  15. Laredo United Prelims: Strong brass opener, visually very clean, opener gives you chills. Red cape tango that's all, soloists playing with so much passion, woodwinds wow, electronic issues not even effecting the band (kinda sounds like fire embers) balances sound all around, intensity is peak, COLOR GUARD, closer gives you goose bumps, book prop is so good, soloist made me tear up, awesome job united.

I would say as of now my personal prediction stands, Boyd's run was pretty good considering their 4AM call time at the school, and was one of the cleanest groups of this half, although I was heavily underestimating Eaton as a whole, Im not sure if I would place them in finals due to dirt, but at BOA they would for sure perform well, otherwise these are my potential finalists in this half in my opinion: Hebron Marcus McKinney Boyd Wylie Braswell Rock Hill Lewisville Sachse Rockwall

The Music and Visual Ensemble scores absolutely include design and construction considerations. EVERYTHING in BOA is tied into design except for the individual scores, and even those are affected by the range of vocabulary and style the students have been asked to perform. Music GE is also unavoidably tied to visual GE (from the judges perspective), which is unfortunate because that involves a lot of things that are mostly outside the students' control. It's all about how impactful the "moments" are, and that impact lives on a spectrum that varies by judge and is affected by design choices and how well the students execute. Even a perfectly performed show that the judges think is poorly designed will not score super well, while on the flip side you can have a brilliant show design that's been dummy-proofed that scores well with a moderately executed performance because the design is communicated at a high level. There's definitely some difference of opinion on how this should be approached in the judging world. 2019 Grand Nationals is a perfect example. Vandegrift won because they had a well designed show that was executed at a very high level, but Avon had a more complex and difficult approach that ultimately fell just short of the gold despite BOA changing the sheets that year to give more credit for difficulty vs achievement. I personally prefer watching the Vandegrift show because I just think they march and play better (and artistry is its own form of effect), but there's certainly disagreement over the matter. Ultimately, we see many Texas bands starting to figure out how to be successful in both, which is why 13 of 14 6A state finalists were also finalists at BOA SA a few days before. That last one attended both but has definitely figured the UIL game out much more effectively than the BOA game. Actually, that refined style you're associating with DFW comes from the University of Houston, originally pioneered by Eddie Green. It has spread throughout the state and takes different forms depending on who the director is and especially who their primary clinician or mentor is. It has been reduced by many people over the years to a very bland but technically very precise approach. Mr. Green had bands that were anything but bland, though.

  19. Carmel is always so darn artful lol. overall id say it's the cleanest perf ive seen today, shout-out of course to the guard, only guard in the country that approaches tw's top to bottom depth and clarity of technique imo. way to go Eryn Boone for keeping what Rosie built alive and well!!! def more of a brain tickler, there are other shows more viscerally exciting and that im sure a general audience will like more, but for what the show is aiming for it's great. guess my main criticism would be communication of theme. besides the plague masks what about the show says prophecy? it feels like you could call it any other number of names. just call it great drill + great music lol. oh yeah and that blue fabric they pull out was friggin' gorgeous!!

  20. This is going to be by far the most talented area C 6A competition, personally, I think 2021 was the most entertaining but just looking at all of these bands, its clear that this is going to have the highest quality performances to ever come out of this area, with 3 (essentially) locked state finalists, 1 group that could be low finalist/top 16, and a cluster of groups just trying to brute force their way into the teens at state (the McKinneys, the Wylies, Braswell, Rockwall, and Rock Hill just to name the ones that most people expect) and groups that would certainly place in the top half if they can get past area, which is not mentioning the groups that have strong chances of breaking into area and would have been locks had they competed at this level ANY other year, so even if your band or your alma mater doesn't place like you expect, know that almost everyone is going to be on point and at their best relative to their previous years. And from the looks of what UIL is passing (5 extra visual fundamental hours and I can only assume the revamped 5 judge system will see overwhelming support from directors), this activity is evolving to something no one would expected back in the 90s or 2000s, and with the increased strength of middle school music education, these groups are going to reach levels pretty unheard of, and were beginning to see the shift mainly in area B with Timber Creek and Keller Central, who in my opinion will become some of the new powerhouses in the state, and it will be entertaining to see if anyone from Area C will follow suit.

  22. This. Keller's performances at BOA fell flat for me, those long Mahler phrases weren't keeping the energy going and while it sounded good, it didn't pop. Today was a whole different experience. The intensity didn't let up, and things were much more in tune and balanced. Not perfect, there were a few issues but very much a different show for me than last week. Congrats to Keller on their improvement!

Yes, but Cedar Ridge, Round Rock, McNeil and Westwood are all RRISD, which makes the total of RRISD bands in that list 4. I should also clarify I'm not like 100% confident in my prediction, I missed a few group that I'd consider state finalist potentials. I'm just going off of what I have seen today.

  25. Don’t sleep on Keller this year! I mean my goodness I haven’t heard superior control in phrases that long all day! Their sound is sooo freaking full, balanced, well blended, all the good adjectives you can think of! Their technique is clean as a whistle. The composition really allows you to hear the different voices in the ensemble not just in the brass but also in the woodwinds. That raises the demand considerably and and that trumpet feature in the beginning was something else entirely. It was like you were being transcended into another plane of existence so yeah I liked it lol

  33. Yay! I loved Dville Duncanville just blew me away with the super high quality of their ensemble’s sound. Like WOW so full, strong and mature. That high brass fanfre in the beginning stunned me because it sounded like a pro wind ensemble. Like omg the trumpets handled their exposed technical passages throughout the show so well. It’s so cool to hear a trumpet section that comfortable in challenging passages.

  34. Cyfair and Seven lakes sounded fantastic, I think they are much closer than people say they are. Cy-fair still takes first. Seven lakes has a harder show and they still have a lot of room to grow, but I’m sure they will be in a great place for state/San Antonio

  36. The way I outwardly show my expression are mainly lots of “sheesh!!”, “wow that’s really cool”, “didn’t expect that!”, phrases of that nature coming out of my mouth, and I usually reserve that for when I see shows live. It’s hard to move me more than that but it has happened! The way you describe this show, haven’t seen it before or heard a second of it, but it definitely gets me rooting for it more come Grand Nats, holiday shows are great and lots of good fun! being distinct from the crowd in that regard do help them stand out and be more memorable too. Best of luck to them!

  38. I would love to hear Water Night again, but you know it would never be as excellent as Westfield's version! (Yes, I am majorly biased, I know. 😄) My frank opinion is that these Wes shows have a little bit of a diminishing appeal the more of them you've seen over the years. There are just so many similarities that I frequently find myself thinking, "Oh, that's just like that show from 2013! Oh, that's just like that show from last year!" I just want more imagination. I know Wes is capable of it. He's produced some truly creative, epochal programs in past. Reinvention can be a good thing!

  39. Hi friends! Activity around here definitely picks up around Area Saturday. This is great and also not so great at the same time. See something that may be spam, abusive, or infringing on copyright? By all means, report it!!! We'll look at it and take appropriate actions. Trust me. We have some neat moderating tools that I am hungry to try out!!! Also, please leave a reason why you flagged it. The Report function is NOT used to downvote someone's prediction because you don't like it because they didn't pick your band and that's totally sus because we're really good this year HONEST! Don't abuse that reporting tool. It slows my day down, especially when I am eating. Good luck to everyone this weekend!

  44. ok Fisher's had me clapping at my computer screen like the complete weirdo i am. ugh, somebody get me some eggnog, i don't even like eggnog!!! amazing Christmas aesthetic, the costuming, all that shimmery red, the set pieces, so nicely balanced across the field w/ the staging. the jazziness, the personality, the general positive feelings, it's so darn mirthful. amaaazing singing by the soloist, what a lovely way to end the show too w/ the full band carol. BY FAR my favorite Nats bubble band. so much creative wit on display here, subversion of expectations. best holiday show yet. way to go guys!!

  46. Carmel rifles showing why they are the defending WGI champs. That was pretty amazing. When did Carmel become such a music powerhouse? I swear they didn’t sound this good pre-covid.
    1 point
  47. Absolutely, however all streaks do end. Is this the year? I think it is the most possible this year than it has been for at least 10 years. I like the show, but it is missing a spark the ones I would rank higher have. I don't see an Eagle for them this year based off this performance, but they will be right there at the top. I think 4th right now. Good bet? Probably not -they'll adjust the show over the next few weeks so by Grand Nationals it will be awesome.

    UIL 6A Area C 2023

This is my current prediction but it could flip flop with anyone in the 5-9 range personally, I think Boyd and WEast have the best shot since they overall with balancing cleanliness and difficulty are the best in UIL standards (Boyd had probably the easiest show in finals last year and got 6th due to cleanliness, they are way cleaner this year with a show more in line difficulty wise with the finals group so I believe they will place high, and WEast is harder and while less clean, still shows clear improvement from last year while having a tougher show), but frankly it could go any way, Boyd and WEast could just as easily place 9th and 10th as they could place 5th and 6th, the only groups that are locked in state personally are the top 4, everyone else completely depends on if its a good run and/or what the judges see as superior for UIL. My two scenarios for the last 2 state qualifiers if I had to pick out based on difficulty would be Rock Hill and Wylie East, and cleanliness would be a fight between Boyd, and the Wylies, but again could be dead wrong and the two finalists could be Braswell and Rockwall or Sachse and McKinney high, this year is such a hard year to predict since everyones improved so much that finding whos superior on the micro level which area is all about, is nearly impossible, so people shouldnt really worry much about the placements besides just having the privilege of experiencing state, and should just enjoy being able to compete with incredible bands
