  1. Btw yay LD Bell for making state in two consecutive cycles! First time they’ve done so in 11 years (2010 & 2012 cycles).

Westwood is looking really strong going into st louis and if they can keep the energy up in between competitions, they are looking like a huge contender for finals at state and san antonio.

  3. Sorry for this, I am working on a couple site fixes. As you likely have seen we've been getting slammed with a lot of spam on the forums lately so I've been working on a couple fixes to resolve that and overall site stability - things should be returning to normal now!

Impressive finish from Hutto. This is such a tough area because there aren’t really any “filler” finals groups, they’re all fighting immensely hard (and have a realistic shot) at taking one of those state spots. With Dripping Springs move up to 6A, the opening of M&G Johnson and the rapid improvement of McNeil this area seems to have the highest jump in difficulty in recent years. Not to mention the consistent fights bands like Churchill and Weiss put up to secure a spot in finals.

  5. i mostly agree about the staging but they're def burying some of their most impressive tosses backfield this yr!! was just watching area from a diff angle, there's a front walkover that's quickly and cleanly performed backfield side 1 that i've NEVER noticed after multiple viewings of this performance lol. why is that not done at the end of the opener as part of a trick toss ripple front and center??? that's the perfect time to highlight the really impressive tosses i saw back in May!!! still haven't really seen most of em!!

Wow - its really interesting to see almost no comments about Wylie East. Its their 2nd year in 6A and 2nd trip to 6A state after 2 consecutive 5A state trips. It should be a tough task for them to play 1st at state and be followed by CTJ. Good luck, best wishes, and "high" box 5 scores for all Area C schools.

  7. The Woodlands also does such a great job of staging their guard during major features. Really puts that world class guard on stage and you can just see the Visual/GE points going up up up!

Congrats to the great bands that made State! I'm so proud of our Katy band for continuing to reach new heights as a program. They've made three straight Area finals which has never been done before at Katy. We've gotten better each year, but the bar keeps getting raised by the phenomenal programs in our Area. We're definitely underdogs in this realm, but our kids embrace it and keep pushing forward. Bridgeland, Cy-Fair, Cy Woods, Tompkins, and Seven Lakes...we wish y'all the best!

  10. From my own experience, there is no higher compliment to a teacher than the knowledge that you inspired your own students to teach as well. The Woodlands HS Guard is guided by three of the finest, most creative and energetic teachers I have ever known…led by Cynthia Robbins and ably assisted by Joseph Danforth and Tiffany Quinstein.

  11. If anyone in the DFW area is interested in seeing some of the top bands perform live before state, Coppell is hosting a Show of Shows at their stadium on Saturday, October 28th at 5:30 PM as a send off for state. Hebron, Coppell, Keller, and Flower Mound will all perform and admission is free, though they're also taking donations for homeless shelters. None of these four will be at BOA San Antonio, so if you're not able to attend the state marching contest this will be one of the only opportunities to see them live before the end of the season.

Honestly, rather than debate the Area D finalists with each other, I'm much more interested in debating the strength of the Area D finalists as a whole compared to other Areas. So I'm very interested to see how all the Area D finalists do at BOA San Antonio next week. We'll get a good idea of how strong this Area is against the rest of the best.

Well the judges probably do not have that much experience towards percussion as there isn’t a dedicated perc judge at area. Cedar ridge’s percussion received 8th in percussion from one of the judges but personally i don’t think that necessarily demonstrates where their perc is.

No shade, but what are your credentials for having a "sense of what a state-caliber band" is? I say we just let the bands do the talking and see what results we have come Saturday night at 11:00 PM

Okay yeah, I can definitely see where you're coming from. We didn't perform our full closer at Cap City or USBands, but I do agree that it is the weakest part of our show at the moment, largely because we started learning drill and music for it much later than we intended to. However, I do think it will contribute greatly to our vis scores because it has some pretty cool and challenging drill that is starting to get dangerously clean. Nonetheless still looking forward to this comp quite a bit, and excited for more state representation from this area!!

  20. As a Wylie band student myself, I say that we have a good chance at making top 3. This is our best year so far and our results so far have been very revealing to some of the top bands in the state that we have competed against so far. I say that with the best show we have ever performed that day we may even catch a caption too. Just my opinion

Churchill beat McNeil because of one visual judge that had them 7th. They were ahead of WCHS in music by 9 points.

Yes, we are still going to BOA St. Louis. This intense schedule has its own long story. We originally thought that we will just not go to state and do BOAs only (Austin, St. Louis, and SA). But the RRISD announced that every band who qualified state is required to go. But at that time the trip to st. Louis is alreadyplanned an booked. This is why ww is going to all of them. Thank you for your concern tho!

  26. That is how it worked last year. For example, China Spring drew 1st out of all state qualifying bands for finals performance order last year. They got 2nd in prelims, so in finals they performed 6th at the beginning of the top 5 prelims bands.

  34. i was more saying that i was surprised about lake ridge missing finals—their show wasn’t as strong as last year’s, but it was still impressive and felt finals-worthy. also, i feel that mansfield had a far better performance than they did last year, but they placed the exact same. i do agree with you, though, and i’m not discrediting your opinion at all!! just my two cents as well haha

  36. I don't usually watch guard for marching band because I'm always so focused on the winds but, I specifically remember the Woodlands guard at San Antonio finals last year catching my eye. If a guard is able to draw your eyes toward them and off of a band such as The Woodlands, I'd definitely call that a win. I can easily say their guard was the cleanest and most engaging guard I've ever seen in a high school marching band. They know what they're doing and how to do it the best it can be done.

  37. Seven Judge system, I assume they have more than seven to rotate between performances. The categories are: music ensemble, brass, woodwinds, percussion, visual ensemble, visual individual, and content/design. Ordinal system for ranking, judge’s preference for tie breakers. listen to the danpod podcast from state last season to get a better explanation. https://www.uiltexas.org/files/music/UIL_5A-6A_State_Judge_Manual_(7-judge).pdf

  39. Cyndi Robbins and her team are outstanding and helping to redefine what a top visual program in Texas looks like during the fall season. I also think the model that they follow, with the junior high guard classes during the day for PE credit in addition to after school rehearsals, is one that other bands in Texas should adopt, if they're able. (It also helps that Robbins seems to have active involvement at the junior high level.) Without a strong feeder program, I think it's hard to maintain a world class finalist program in Texas, when you're competing against a bunch of groups out of state that don't have rehearsal restrictions.

Would also like to mention that Haltom didn't even make area finals the last 2 years (13th in 2021 and 15th in 2022) so to end up 5th in prelims and 6th in finals is a pretty impressive turn around from the program. Especially in such a brutal area.

  41. So I don't know who is the color guard instructor(s) at The Woodlands, but I have this thought that at least a handful of the 500+ guard members they have (only a slight exaggeration) will go on to become instructors themselves some day spreading whatever magic they learned and we will see programs executing at this level all across the state. Maybe it's a fever dream but that would be amazing for the progress of visual programs throughout Texas.

I don't know that I'd consider Bridgeland's win a shocker. (Full disclosure, I'm a BHS parent.) I don't think they executed as well as in other recent contests, but in my biased view, it's a dazzling show and was well-executed relative to most of the other bands. But I'll concede that I was a little surprised at the first place ranking. CyFair's show is incredible and really creative, with some deeper commentary on the human condition than what you typically see on the field. I've never heard the spectating band kids "ooh" and "ahh" as much as they did at CyFair's performance. I expected CyFair and Bridgeland to rank 1 and 2, but I didn't know which would be which. If I had to venture a guess - and this is my own pet peeve - there seems to be a trend in recent years for some of the elite bands in the state to go light on the music and heavier on the choreography and props. You'll see many top bands' shows feature tradeoffs between brass and woodwinds--one marches while the other plays, and vice versa. There are a LOT of musical rests in modern shows, which disappoints me (I'm a 90s band kid whose school used to compete at the TX state finals level consistently--old timers would recognize the name). Marching band should primarily be about music, and not just quality of music, but quantity, also--each marcher should spend the majority of their time on the field playing music. Maybe that's an outdated view, I don't know. I'll comment a bit on the other bands, too. Tompkins was very clean and engaging, and I'm a sucker for Stravinsky - I had them missing state by one, but they made it, and deservedly so. Cy Ranch continues to struggle a bit with cleaning up forms and music, but it's still a really solid show, and the fact that they placed last in the finals is a testament to the growing muscle of Area I. I was surprised at James E. Taylor's show - it seemed a step down from last year, and I know they are an excellent band and was fully expecting them to make state, so I was disappointed for those kids and I know they'll bounce back next year strong as ever. I was really impressed with 7 Lakes' show - they cleaned it up a lot from prior performances, and the "thousand paper cranes" concept was unique and interesting. Musically, I think I liked them the best, but honestly it was probably the score I liked the most. I found myself liking Jordan's show quite a bit, but then I started second-guessing myself--is it the glittering uniforms that are distracting me? Should I rank them lower? I really think they should tone down the uniforms - they're shiny to the point of being distracting from the performance, which was otherwise very strong. Cy Woods had me nervous, probably because they were so incredibly clean, and I loved their choreo and props, and also because they historically have done well against us. My own final ranking for the finals was: 1. Cy Fair 2. Bridgeland 3. Seven Lakes 4.-5. Tie-Jordan, Cy-Woods 6. Tompkins 7.-8. Tie - JET, Katy 9. Cinco Ranch 10. Cy-Ranch I wasn't too far off, but I'm glad I was wrong about #1!
