    2025 WGI Thread

I know this thread will be buried shortly, but anyway: Winter guard units are officially signing up for the World Championships in Dayton, Ohio! The Texas contingent will be solid again. I think we could see strong medalist contenders in all three scholastic classes, if the ones listed maintain their trajectories. (Note: Some are still signing up.) The ones from Texas currently on the lists: Scholastic A Dripping Springs HS Emerson HS Jordan HS Katy HS Louis D. Brandeis HS Melissa HS Pearland HS The Colony HS Tomball Memorial HS Veterans Memorial HS Wylie HS Scholastic Open Cedar Ridge HS Cy-Fair HS Little Elm HS Southlake Carroll HS Westlake HS Scholastic World The Woodlands HS Independent A Allure Independent Black Gold Eagle Mountain Independent RGV Winter Guard Independent Open Undaunted Independent World Invictus Ménage Mirage

  24. I'll be there for sure! Always one of my favorite times to preform. This year though we're getting clinicians and people to give us feedback. So it has the all the comp environment feelings, we just won't get placed or any of that. Makes it ten times better than before!

  29. yeah both. honestly i feel like lakeridge's drill and choreo was more challenging last year than this year's. the harder the drill the better your visual score will be (if clean ofc) so like i dont see them improving visually this year.
    1 point
  30. Yep. Sounds like they will be another semi finalist at grand nations.

  31. Disastrous? How so? This contest is very underrated and has been run very well the last 2 years and years before that. I really wish we saw more of the north Dallas suburb schools at this contest. Plano East invitational isn’t the best venue and those schools would have a better exp at POC. Same with Mesquite marching festival. Top 3 at this contest: 1. Lake Ridge 2. Colleyville 3. Berkner I really think it’ll be a toss up between these 3 groups.

  36. Ive been loving the representation of other states in these competitive competitions in Texas (BOA Prosper as another example), it makes me wish in a vacuum that Texas was a little smaller or that transportation technology and expense was better, but Texas must be big to fit as many HEBs and Buccees we can lol

  38. I completely agree. I would also tentatively add Clear Lake, Klein Cain, Cy Ranch, and JET, to the mix. I have been really impressed with all of their early season showings. Depends on how they all clean and refine these next two weeks. Very deep contest.

I thought I remembered Marcus doing this one year when I was poring over smbc archives but I could be wrong. Edit: yes, Marcus did it in 2021. From 7 to 3. But you could argue that Marcus isn’t exactly a stranger to top half placements and that an up and coming band might not have the same ability to jump. And perhaps the low prelims placement in 2021 was due to some fluke, so it’s possibly not a good example of a band’s ability to jump.

  42. Scoring is the big difference. For boa, you’ve got music and visual, both having an individual and ensemble judge, both being 20% of the overall score (the two judges give each band a score out of twenty, then they add and divide the two for an average)Then there’s General effect (GE), where there are two music ge and one visual ge judge. Each score out of 20 and then the three are added up for total ge which is added two the two averages of music and visual. The website Hornrank does an amazing job with breaking down results. Captions for prelims are given to each of 4 classes (A, AA, AAA and AAAA) or 1A-4A. Size is based on enrollment grades 10-12. 12 bands to finals based on score regardless of class and class championships do exhibition if they don’t make finals. Other than scoring it’s just another marching contest. Have fun here, I’ll be around as well to see these awesome programs!

  43. This will be my first time attending a BOA comp, I've almost always only gone to UIL comps instead since my band (Plano Sr) never went to BOA at least while I was there. Does anyone have a quick rundown of how BOA could differ from UIL comps, or is it gonna be largely the same?

  44. Nope, but they schedule is out! 11:15- Como-Pickton HS 11:30- Alba-golden HS 11:45- Whitewright HS 12:00- Whitesboro Lunch break 1:15- Gainesville HS 1:30- Community HS 1:45-Van Alstyne HS 2:00- Pine Tree HS 2:15- Sulphur Springs HS 2:30-Celina Break 3:00- Grand Saline HS 3:15- Sherman HS 3:30- Frisco Liberty HS 3:45- Canton HS 4:00- Royse City HS 4:15- Prosper HS 12 to finals, finals starts at 7 PM with class exhibitions for 2A and 3A if needed starting at 6:30. Will be an easy win for prosper but everything else is up for grabs. Here's my early predictions: 1. Prosper (sweep) 2. Royse City 3. Liberty 4. Celina 5. Sherman 6. Celina 7. Sulphur Springs 8. 46. It is really kinda nuts that within a single event, you've got: * The reigning UIL 5A 1st, 2nd, and 4th place finishers * The reigning UIL 6A 1st and 5th place finishers * 80% of the programs you'll see were finalists in last year's BOA SA * This year's reigning BOA Austin AAA 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, AAAA 1st and 3rd place finishers I can't imagine any other event where you get this density of pedigreed programs all on the same night. Plus tickets are like $8. The's some crazy-good value...
