Here are the judges for State: 2014 UIL SMBC ADJUDICATORS Rich Armstrong - Waxahachie High School, Waxahachie, TX Bryan Christian - Vista Ridge High School, Cedar Park, TX Phil Clements – Texas A&M University at Commerce Chip Crotts - Georgia Tech University Chris Knighten - University of Arkansas Jesse Leyva - Kent State University Albert Lo - University of Texas at Brownsville Michael Robinson - University of Georgia Corey Spurlin – Auburn University Mark Waymire – University of Southern Mississippi 3 of the judges (Chip, Albert, and Mark) are veteran BOA/DCI adjudicators in the music performance captions. Also, based on the listing of individuals, there doesn't seem to be an "older"/"bad" judge. So hopefully, each school will get a fair assessment. -

I saw TW perform this morning and Lucas Oil just amplifies their music quality and GE. The performance was through the roof for sure, so exciting to watch. The camera angles through the live feed are way better than the SA regional live feed. -

I saw Marcus this morning. They were crisp, clean, and fast. Their sound quality is phenomenal and I wouldn't be surprised if they take the music caption in semis or finals. The closer has a lot of effect with the snakes and the snake pots as well as the "CHARMED" spelled out on the final drill set. Really loved the show! Didn't get to see LD Bell, but will see them tomorrow. -

Yeah, the brass articulation was a little off in that section due to the cold weather that night...roughly 50 degrees that evening. They'll be fine in the dome this weekend. -

2013 BOA San Antonio Super Regional
sax_man 2007 replied to Rubisco's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Everyone, the original PDF I attached had a mistake to the Visual GE ordinal for LD Bell. I had them using 16.10 and it was actually 18.10. This brings them from 14th in Visual GE to 5th in Visual GE. This change will only affect Total GE. All other ordinals for Music and Visual are correct. My apologies, should've put on my external auditor hat to double check that, sorry. Anyway, if you'd like to reassess the ordinals, this is correct in the attached. 2013 BOA San Antonio Results.pdf- 230 replies

Also note that several bands had ordinals that were the same as several bands came out with the same score in a particular category (i.e. Total Music GE, I think I counted 4 bands tied in 9th place for it). Anyway, congrats to all the bands and congrats to The Woodlands for their 1st Super Regional win! Bring the eagle back to Texas!- 230 replies

The Woodlands will be crowned the BOA San Antonio Super Regional Champion. No one will match them in the GE category, especially with the additional visuals and ending they've just added. I see them scoring in the 94-95 range.- 230 replies

I got to see The Woodlands perform at the Region 9 UIL competition. Holy smokes...show is finally complete (maybe) with an extended closer after the "W" formation performed at BOA Conroe. In addition, they've added a lot more visuals throughout the show in comparison to what's shown in the MFA video on demand. I will say this...the updated closer is so colorful and visually appealing that it rips your eyes out. Definitely excited to see them and the rest of the Texas contingent perform at SA and Indy.- 230 replies

2012 BOA San Antonio Predictions
sax_man 2007 replied to Rubisco's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
To address your wife's curiosity on the 5th letter, it was probably removed from the UIL Area competition due to time contraints (capped at 10 minutes total I believe) and will probably be implemented/reappear at BOA SA, as they will have more time (15 minutes in total) to complete the last portion of their show, which I believe ends wtih the opening of the 5th and final letter. Pretty excited to see the whole thing come together. -
2012 5A Area F Marching Contest
sax_man 2007 replied to Nosagi's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I had the opportunity to see the final 2 performing bands, Dickinson H.S. and The Woodlands H.S., as I had other commitments in the evening which prevented me from seeing the other finalist bands perform. Dickinson HS "Revolution": The band did a good job in performing Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, Chopin's Revolutionary Etude, and Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. The technique by the woodwinds and the brass were very crisp, especially during the 1812 Overture in their closer, but they had some trouble projecting their sound to the press box, now granted, the weather at 10 PM was in the low 40s; although, it definitely reminded me of the closer performed by Carolina Crown from their 2008 show. The visual performance was great from the double helix move in the opener, to the choreography by the color guard, and to the effective drill design throughout the show. Overall, it was a treat watching this group, especially at the end, a member of the band comes off the field and goes up the drum major podium to knock him out and claim victory for the group. Best wishes to you guys at state! The Woodlands HS "Letters to Home": WOW, WOW, and WOW. I can see why they're the BOA Conroe regional champions as well as being one of the favorites going into the BOA San Antonio Super Regional. This show contains some really difficult music (i.e. Letters to Home by Aaron Copland and Symphony No.2 by David Diamond) as well as a demanding visual performance and it is played and marched flawlessly. This show moves and it definitely makes you hold on to your seat. The beginning starts with the woodwinds on side 1 playing Copland's Letters to Home and then the story of "Sarah" begins as she writes her family about her journey into the world. The music then transitions to the brass on side one, and my goodness, the low brass reminds me of the powerful low brass from Lassiter 2002, if you've never seen that show, you're definitely missing out. Even in the cold weather, the sound was so clear and the projection of their sound reached the press box without any issues. I can only imagine what it will sound like in San Antonio. The 2nd movement goes into more Copland selections and the mellophones really shine, especially at the final chord at the end of the movement with some ridiculous trills. The show then goes into the ballad with a more soothing rendition of Copland's Letters to Home with a major impact by the whole band at the end of the ballad, in which no words can express the beauty of the music. I know there are many within the band community who oppose the use of narration in show, but the narration performed throughout this show provides so much effect and truly displays their theme of "Letters to Home." Finally, the band begins playing excerpts from David Diamond's Symphony No. 2 with the technique performed interchangeably by the brass and woodwinds which has so much calmness, clarity, and it is played with ease. We are then brought back again into a final close with Copland's Letters to Home where the band (including the color guard who are beautifully dressed in white dresses) just moves so well in unison, provided the never ending individual visual choreography, and the power that is exuded by these musicians definitely sparks the emotions within one's self. This show has it all: music technicality, visual design & choreography, and most importantly the general effect. I wish this band the all best and best of luck at BOA and UIL State. -

How can you put Vandegrift as a "lock" when they didn't even make finals at BOA Conroe? I'd replace Vandegrift with The Woodlands and that list would make more sense. -

I totally agree with you. I believe 2nd-4th place will be a toss up with Marcus placing first due to their flawless execution in their performance. I believe it was 2005 at BOA Arlington, not 2006 where LD Bell was out of the top 2 at a regional. With relation to The Woodlands, they will definitely use SA as a stepping stone to make a big push at GN the following week. As an alum from the 2006 Hide and Seek show, I remember this being the case.
