It's the granddaddy of them all, the Bands of America Grand National Championships! Join me from Indianapolis, IN as I interview Kyle Young, associate band director at Carmel HS, and hear hot takes regarding all the finalist bands! For the second time in the history of the modern world*, you are about to watch a reaction video of results from a marching band contest. This time it’s the Bands of America Grand National Championship Finals! Note: In this video you will see honest reactions from bloggers, vloggers, & overall fans of the marching arts. As these reactions are honest and instant, please take no offense to anything seen or said. Everyone in this video is a giant band fan/nerd and was excited in anticipation of the results. There are always some surprises so naturally there are some big reactions. But remember, in the end, we are all winners in life! *This is a scientific fact

The Texas State Marching Contest was held in Waco, TX in the Baylor Stadium until 2003, if I remember correctly. In 2002 it poured rain all day long damaging a number of instruments and causing quite the ruckus. They ended up cancelling finals and it was decided after that to move finals into a dome. So his analogy is apt. -

I believe Kennesaw Mountain accomplished the same feat in 2002. -
Area To State

Apparently, this option was actually presented. It would've resulted in one less band advancing to state. It was voted down. -
50 Words: BOA vs. UIL
Montoya replied to Danpod's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Just to clarify, in Michigan, there is a circuit that all MCBA bands compete in. Their average score from these contests determine their ranking in their Flight (class). The top ten (usually) are state finalists and compete in Detroit. So yes, you are correct that state championships are held every year in Michigan. But not everyone qualifies to compete in it every year. Regarding California, there is actually not a state sanctioned championship. If I remember correctly, there are two large circuits that bands usually choose to compete in. And I do believe its a North/South circuit. But I could be wrong. But again, yes, they are held every year. In Florida, not everyone competes in FMBA. They can choose whether to attend or not. I am not entirely sure how this circus works. Ohio has two main circuits, OMEA and MSBA. Like California, bands pick a circuit they want to compete in. What does this all mean? Beats me! I think it's frivolous to compare state to state because we all have different issues. Marching Band is truly an extra-curricular activity in some states (meaning no help from districts, school, etc). Also, UIL is not a "circuit" like other states have. Carry on, everyone! -
Area D, 2010: While not for state advancement, Pflugerville and Westwood tied for tenth in Area Prelims. Judges preference put Westwood into finals.

10 finalists. 6-7 to state (depending on if there are 30-34 bands, or 35+). -

Electronics in UIL?
Montoya replied to Nosagi's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
It is my understanding that pre-recorded narration, like a Tarpon Springs show, is legal now. As long as it is live triggered. Narration, sound effects, etc. are now considered Musical Effects so they're all good. Needless to say, I'm having a field day with this this year! -
Electronics in UIL?
Montoya replied to Nosagi's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Taken from "The Leaguer" "Another marching band issue has to do with the rule addressing electronically produced music. With the world of technology continually evolving and new devices being introduced almost daily, it appears virtually impossible to draft a rule that addresses all circumstances and all applications of technology. At present, Section 1105 (4) states that all electronically produced music including narration and sound effects shall be performed live and in real time by eligible students. However, in the fall of 2011 the UIL State Executive Committee issued the following interpretation to further define what is acceptable and what is not in regards to digital samples. The interpretation states, -

I would just like to say I am glad to see more of the Austin-area bands getting out of the "small pond" and going out and competing with the "big boys." Congrats to Akins, Anderson, Bowie, Cedar Park, Cedar Ridge, Crockett, Leander, McNeil, Pflugerville, Rouse, Vandegrift, Vista Ridge, Westlake, and Westwood for their performances at the three BOA Regionals this year! -

I know plenty of groups who place in State Finals, Grand Nationals Finals, WGI Finals and DCI Finals who would disagree... -

^This Austin-area and San Antonio schools will always go Friday or EARLY Saturday morning. Though, like Daniel mentioned, there are extenuating circumstances. Though for some reason, Leander schools get to go in the last two blocks on Saturday. I guess because they are farther north? -
