I wondered about t his - they turned her down actually to focus on the marching/playing which I could hear the band fine.

I found the judging rather weird - not sure if the early morning show was a cause since cedar ridge is rather new.

I know everyone is given a score - I was just assuming this is how the judges are to rank the bands. If it was truly a 1st/ 2nd/ 3rd place kind of thing - I'd think that they'd at least announce them that way instead of in 'random order'. This will be my first time going to watch a state competition, I've seen a lot more of the BOA judging and that makes a lot more sense to me.

Something that I was told by a director and it really helped me understand the UIL prelims and finals better: It's not really the judge's job to rank every band there. Is band 18 better than band 22? Who knows - but the prelims judge needs to say these are the 10 that need to go to finals because these are the 10 best ( in whatever order) For finals - it's not really the judge's job to say that number 4 is better than number 5 or whatever - it's really to just make sure the right top '6' or top '5' go to state. That's why at the UIL finals announcement they don't announce who 'won' - they announce who is going to state in RANDOM ORDER. So then when the bands GET to state - that's when the ranking is supposed to happen.

I have to agree on this - the placement of Westlake baffles me - no disrespect intended but there were some obvious musical challenges that occurred.

How many of you guys were at finals last night? The one thing I pointed out while I was there is that every one of those bands last night were on par with the bands that made semi finals last year at grand nationals. I wouldn't want to be a judge. I know daniel s. Was supposed to be there last night but his battery died. Can you give us your honest thoughts on finals?

Can anyone give me a rough time schedule for UIL? Is this going to be another 'finish at midnight' type thing?

Early run with sun in their eyes is what I was told. Number 2 is a rough position.

actually the only real shock is Westwood going instead of Round Rock. honestly watching them both today I felt that Westwood had the better run

Seems Bowie is missing here... Then again - there are multiple bowies so I'm now all kinds of confused

It was too bad - I felt it was Stony Point's best performance in years. I loved their flags!

So how many bands will Area D be sending to state?

honestly Leander was so fast and furious + clean on top of it I thought they were amazing. I do wish Cedar Ridge would have done a bit better I think they are a late blooming band though this was a very tight competition

There are lots of districts with multiple schools that go - I think the question was two schools from the same district making finals in the same year. Hebron and Marcus are the same school district as well. Even though this isn't the first time two schools from the same district attended and made finals this IS the first time that two schools from the same district attended for the FIRST TIME and made finals

In 2002 Churchill and reagan band both from North East ISD went to grand nationals and made finals. Claudia Taylor Johnson is also from this school district and has competed and made finals.

All 5 bands from Texas made finals!

I find it very interesting that the top three at visual (individual and ensemble avg) were also the top three in GE and the top 3 overall.
