  1. Aside from a very brief (usually 2 or 3 evenings in may) marching band camp for the incoming 8th graders, they are not taught any marching fundamentals at the middle school level. A fairly decent number of the middle schools in Leander ISD do have guard programs that primarily teach the fundamentals of flag work.
  2. Anyone having trouble finding today’s stream on NFHS? I’m only seeing options for tomorrow afternoon.
  3. I found it to be quite effective as well, generally speaking.
  4. The SA super regional never disappoints. last night was filled with so many amazing performances from top to bottom. Huge night for Leander ISD which has had an insane amount of success over the past decade. There have been 10 SA supers from fall 2013 to now (no contest in 2020) and here is how the district has stacked up. Vandegrift- Attended all 10 and made finals at all 10, placing in the top half 7 of those times (2013,2016,2017,2018,2019,2021,2022, and 2023) and placed on the podium 4 of those times. 3rd overall in 2017, 2nd overall in 2019 and 2021, and of course 1st overall in 2023. Leander- Attended 9 of the 10 and made finals 7 times. They placed in the top half 4 of those times (2014,2016,2018, and 2019) and placed on the podium twice. 3rd overall in 2014 and 2016. Cedar Park- Attended all 10 and made finals 8 times. They placed in the top half twice (2014,2015) Vista Ridge-Attended all 10 and made finals 6 times. They placed in the top half 4 times (2018,2019,2022,2023) and placed on the podium once with third overall in 2019. Rouse-Attended all 10 and made finals twice. They also performed as the class 2A champion in 2018. They placed in the top half for this first time this year, and I expect we’ll see more from them in the future. Last night was also the second time ever that 5 LISD bands made finals with the first being in 2021. I have no doubt Glenn will follow a similar trajectory in the years to come.
  5. It’s actually only been 2 competitive seasons. It just feels like a long time due to covid. Vandy won the music caption at SA in 2019.
  6. 10, 9, 8, and 7 all within a single point! Those recaps can’t come soon enough
  7. I just don’t understand how this kind of stuff happens. It’s just so unprofessional and infuriating.
  8. I just don’t understand why we can’t have finals multi cams like they were in 2008-2014. Those were so professionally filmed and you could tell they either knew where to look or studied the shows from earlier contests. None of these crazy whip pans, or focusing on a group doing nothing when something interesting is happening elsewhere.
  9. If we are talking about finals I'm not nervous for them at all. It could possibly influence whether they are top or bottom half draw though.
  10. (copied from HornRank so sorry if you have to see this twice lol) I see a lot of people leaving Leander out of finals contention and I think it may be worthwhile to take a look at how they have finished their past two seasons. In 2021 Leander was 7th in Austin finals with a 77.80 and ended the season in 9th at SA with a 90.50, an increase of 12.7 points over the course of the season. In 2022 Leander was 12th in Austin finals with a 74.10 and ended the season in 16th at SA with an 88.15, an increase of 14.05 points(!!)2 seasons is not enough data to call this a trend but just for fun (if you're like me and find looking at data fun), that would be an average point increase of 13.375.Leander's Austin finals score of 78.10 plus the (average) increase of 13.375 would put them at a 91.475. That's a score that would be comfortably in finals.Does this data mean anything tangible for this season? Most likely no, but it'll be interesting to see if this level of growth happens for a third year in a row.
  11. I feel like I remember hearing about them having a bassoon crack due to the cold as well. Brutal call time conditions+old school UIL slotting.
  12. Vandegrift’s music book is written by Andrew Markworth
  13. And Leander is right there taking the occasional sub-caption over Rouse and CP. I don't think they are as far out of medal contention as some may believe.
  14. In fairness, UIL has shifted over the years to become closer to BOA than it was back in 2004, or even 2014 for that matter. I expect some differences for sure but nothing incredibly drastic.
  15. The detailed recaps from Area H give a much more close picture than the overall ordinals show. Woodwinds for example being 163,164,165 is insanely tight. Gonna be an awesome state contest!
  16. Someone can correct me if I am wrong but these recent results mean that both Vandegrift and Hebron have the opportunity to complete the "trifecta" in a 5 year span that only L.D. Bell has accomplished this century. Bell did it with a largest classification State title in 2004, a SA super regional win in 2006, and a Grand National win in 2007 If Vandy wins SA this Saturday they will have a Grand national win in 2019, a largest classification State title in 2022 and 2023, and a SA super regional win in 2023 If Hebron wins Nationals they will have a largest classification State title in 2021, an SA super regional win in 2021 and 2022, and a Grand national win in 2023. Absolutely INSANE levels of success for both programs.
  17. Pearland's music ensemble scores would be an example of this. 25th in terms of content so compared to the field not exceedingly difficult. The 4th in achievement is saying they performed that more conservative repertoire nearly perfectly. All in that judges opinion of course.
  18. Music ensemble really has me scratching my head. I'm thinking we will see the most movement in that caption.
  19. There is currently a forecast for rain this coming Saturday but as long as it is light the contest will continue as scheduled. In the case of severe weather conditions there is a scheduled weather make up day for the contest during next school week.
  20. different contest with two weeks of cleaning in between. Plenty of bands end up placing higher than multiple groups that placed ahead of them by the end of the season.
  21. It is usually not worth while to compare scores from one contest to another due to scores being contextual. Higher scores at the top of a contest usually have more to do with how high of a floor was established with whomever is in 12th or 14th place. There are outliers to this of course (see Marcus 2012) but we tend to see a roughly 9-12 point spread from bottom of finals to top of finals.
  22. I can't stop chuckling about the "playbook" comment 🤣 As if directors are scouring YouTube for videos of other bands so that they can copy their drill/music mid season.
  23. Just an FYI for those who don't know. You can find these recaps on the music for all website the night of the competition or early morning after. The horn rank ones that are nicely ordered and organized are the ones that tend to take longer. Back when I was in High School these less organized recaps were the only ones available.
