Gotta think Coppell might be in the mix of the top 6 with that music caption. Blue Springs might be that mix too, that show was impressive! I'm thinking the top is really crowded and I totally agree we can see an entirely different result in finals. 2 bands that won captions didn't place and 2 bands that placed didn't win captions? What? Don't think that will get much more resolved in finals! It'll be a fight! I'll also give a quick shoutout to Westlake - when was the last time this band missed finals in anything?? They always seem to be on the bubble list for these competitions (5A State, BOA SA) and yet they always work their way into finals! The consistency of this band deserves some credit! Props to them!- 230 replies

Broken arrow would be a good pick...if they were going this year -
Something I've always wondered about this contest...what is the difference between red and silver and how do directors decide if they want to do indoor or outdoor? Always been curious.

The more I think about it the more Connally really isn't a surprise. In their past 2 area trips, they barely missed state in 5A in 2008 (7th, with 6 advancing), and were 6th in 4A (4 advancing) in a tough 2011 Area D. After a few tough trips, they really deserved a good outcome. Prior to that they were a consistent 4A state finalist. Good to see them back. I really do wonder about Drip though...Really thought they had one of the cleanest shows from the videos (but then again, that's video).

Connally reminded me last night that as straight forward and predictable these contests appear to be sometimes, you can never count out anyone or anything. I personally had this limited to 5 bands with even a chance to advance, but had Connally as the one band that could make things interest...and that they did. Sorry for underestimating you Connally, when you think about it, they've always been around that bubble, even with all the shifting that has occurred in the Area. They will represent the Area very well, and I think will also be a finalist at state! As for the top 3, who knows how what will shake out at state. I like that these three bands bring very different things to the table, and while I don't know if a medal sweep is possible, I do know it will be hard to top all 3 of these bands. As a Vista alum, gotta say I'm proud of my alma mater and district for what they've accomplished this season. Good to see Vista return to state. Props to Rouse too for being in the thick of things, reminding us that it's a 5 band district!

I'm personally just confused on why someone who apparently lacks a passion for marching band would search for a marching band site, make an account, and take the time to post something. I don't exactly know what you hoped to find, but if you're looking for someone to agree and sympathize with you, you've come to the wrong place. The people who read these forums are some of the most passionate in the state, some who have been following band for a long time because of the memories they have created on these trips that are apparently a waste of time. My only hope is that you're looking to find a little bit of the passion that I'm sure some of your band mates have, and you really are looking for the answer "why invest time in this?" If that's the case, I wish you good luck, you've come to the right place to find your answer P.S. I don't think the UT vs. Yale/Harvard thing really adds to your argument. Graduated 3rd in my class (while in band) and chose to attend UT because it is an amazing school. As did the saluditorian. Still balancing school (in a tough architecture program) and band to this day...look at that, it's even do-able in college! (Sorry, had to defend my school a little there ) -
Looks like Area D is pretty locked in to sending 4 bands, which is a bummer considering the strength of the top 5 bands. Looking at the Region 18 bands, it looks like a guaranteed 6 bands, with probably a maximum of 8? 9 on a good day, maybe. Just don't see there being 10 bands out of that region, if that's what it takes to get to 25. Getting 1 band out of region 12 definitely didn't help. The strong showing from 26 tried to cancel that out, but looks like we'll have to squeeze 5 great bands into 4 spots. Makes it more exciting I suppose!

2013 BOA San Antonio Super Regional

I personally find (and I think many will agree) cedar parks shows to be quite amazing because they're able to have so much "effect" without "acrobatics" and "swingsets." Call them old fashioned, but I love that CP doesn't distract from their amazing sound and velocity with things like that. I still find them to have some of the most entertaining shows without those things, simply because they wow me with what they're able to put out on the field without them. And don't get me wrong, I have nothing against these "extra effect" ideas in shows (that's a whole debate in itself), and I'm not one of those people who hates the direction marching band is going. But you can't help but enjoy a band that just flat out blows your face off with sound and has drill moves that make your jaw drop. To me, that's just as much GE as some railroad crossings.- 230 replies

UIL 4A State Marching Contest
LHSax replied to Dalleyoop's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
I personally love how under the radar dripping springs always tends to be. Seems like every year they avoid the big contests, quietly take their 3rd/4th place at Westlake, and then take care of business at area/state. Through all the mess 4A area D seems to go through each realignment, there's always been DS, holding down the 4A fort. In my opinion, DS might consistently be one of the cleanest bands in the state when it comes down to crunch time at the end of the season, maybe only second to Marcus. They're not gonna blow you away with volume, but the clarity of their show at the end of the season is amazing to watch. No idea how they do it. Wouldn't ever count them out. That said, I do think it'll be hard to dethrone area D. Whether it's the cleanliness of DS or the power and technique of CP/Vandy, whoever Area D sends will be a tough combo to beat. I know the general population of this site tends to be from this region, which might cause a littl bias, but in this case I think it's pretty reasonable bias. Now which band will come out on top?? No freaking clue. But area D finals might be state prelims part 1. -
3 Texas "Dairy Queen" Regionals have come and gone and I gotta say that I have never been less confident in being able to predict the results that will come out of the Alamodome in a few weeks. Normally at this point in the season, there's some pretty obvious hints of who will be finishing on top in San Antonio, but I don't remember the top of the charts ever being so murky. You've got 3 bands who have won regionals (Bowie, Woodlands, Hebron), none of which are the always strong contenders of LD Bell and Marcus. Add CTJ, who has two silver medals so far, both that came nipping on the heals of regional winners, and you have 6 bands that I think not only have a chance at medaling, but SIX bands that have a legitimate shot at coming out on top Saturday night. Will LD Bell and Marcus surge to keep their strangle hold on the top spot? Or will we finally crown a new champion? When was the last time we could say that? What makes this even more exciting?? 3 of these bands will be headed up to Indianapolis to represent us at Grand Nationals, and the other two bands joining them also medaled at the Texas regionals. I'm pretty confident all 5 of these bands will make finals, and hopefuly the eagle will finally end up back in Texas where it belongs. It's a good year to be a TXBand fan. Something tells me we're gonna see some fireworks in the Alamodome in a few weeks.

BOA Dallas results

Wow...Hebron can flat out play!! That mello line! I was also surprised to see them take the regional, but after seeing that video I can definitely see why....Geez, what a book...and I have always loved Hebron's ballads, but this one might top them all. -
Bands of America Austin Regional
LHSax replied to vincentlee1220's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Totally an option. Not blaming the rain for the results, but there are a few odd placements that are of course expected at any contest, especially one so early in the season. I'm not one to break down all the placements and isolate the oddities, but someone on here usually does And I don't think the rain would have effected performance as much as the delay caused some bands as well as the judges to be flexible. Really seemed like MFA handled the whole situation well though. Bummed there wasn't a finals! -

Looks like the rain may have caused some interesting results in those recaps...especially interesting that Bowie took 9th in overall music and STILL won this competition.
