2019 BOA Grand National Championships

Welp, we all knew it was coming...Hebron peaked at the last second right on time!! I love the star drill at the end! Such a simple but effective theme. I would be super confused how they weren’t winning music if it weren’t for this next group...- 1,093 replies

Leander always has the most amazing color palletes. The frenzy of color at the end is just amazing to watch. I always had my doubts that Leander could clean up those ridiculous brass runs, but my goodness it was nails tonight. Can’t wait to see what these guys will come up with next!- 1,093 replies

Even as a Texas homer I have no clue how vandy wrestled visual from Avon. I just don’t understand how a guard can be that good. Like...I don’t understand the physics of it. That said, I could see them as low as 5th in music, considering what these Texas bands have been laying down. Either way, the bar is set. Let’s see what the next Texas 3 have to say about it.- 1,093 replies

I can’t tell who’s having more fun...the woodlands or CTJ!!! These definitely go into the category of “shows I wish I could go back in time and march in”!! Major props to the choreographer for CTJ, all the movement is just a ton of fun and never stops. That will be a tough one for Avon to follow.- 1,093 replies

Unfortunate GN finals isn’t 14 bands, cuz the woodlands very much deserved to be in the top half!! I’ve loved this show more and more with each viewing and the sousas jumping during the jam session gets me every time. What a run to go out on!!- 1,093 replies

I’m sure the non-Texas forum will riot if vandy wins without a guard, and I will be sure to bring the popcorn to watch that debate unfold....- 1,093 replies

I’ll preface this by saying this is still my favorite CTJ show to date. But it’s almost too much of a good thing. There’s just so much happening at the end of this show and it’s a bit overwhelming. I would really like to see what CTJ would do if they took a more linear show learning approach like most bands, because I feel like they learn the entire show fast and then find the need to pump way too much stuff into it over the next couple months. Criticism aside, darn those kids can play, and the soloists are just unreal. Still an amazingly fun show that I think will do really well tonight!!!- 1,093 replies

I’m not counting Leander out by any means. But specifically seeing them squeezed between William mason and Hebron, I don’t know if Leander’s GE score can carry them to the podium.- 1,093 replies

No one even comes close to attempting what Hebron is putting out there musically. I disagree with their musical ranking at SA, despite the dirt, but hopefully they get reward more for it this weekend. And then as much as we rave about Hebron’s music, they may be Texas best visual band this weekend as well, besides maybe Vandy. The contrast with Leander is really interesting and I loved both!- 1,093 replies

Just such a cool show from Leander. They’ve got a style that is so undeniably them, and it’s gonna blow the crowd away tonight. I think the performance captions will keep them off the medal stand, but could easily see them top 3 in GE.- 1,093 replies

Mason was A little too much park and bark for me, but I really enjoy the way they utilize their large band and enormous guard visually. I think they do it a lot better than other bands of their size. I think WM might kick a Texas band out of the top half.- 1,093 replies

Fascinating grouping of 3 bands here that most project in the 3-7 range. Should be a good direct comparison preview.- 1,093 replies

Found myself liking Carmel for the first time this year. Guess it is an acquired taste? Still think it’s musically vulnerable though.- 1,093 replies

Got on to say pretty much this. It is definitely not a show that will get stuck in your head, but the music is fascinating and so different from why is typically put on a football field and the ballad is really something else.- 1,093 replies

I know the season isn't quite over, but the boards tend to die off after GN, so wanted to do a fun exercise while some people were still around. So, time to come up with some sequel shows! If a band were to do a part 2 to their 2019 show next year, what would it be? Here are some examples: Leander - "The Aftermath" - What happens after the nuclear holocaust at the end of their 2019 show...I'm thinking Fallout vibes (I've never played these games, I just assume that's what it's about). Post-apocalyptic world with complete anarchy and chaos, the perfect use of that edgy Leander sound. Vista Ridge - "Turning the Field" - This is actually Part 3 in a series of shows where VR tries to rotate larger and larger things...this time they find a way to rotate the entire football field. Flowermound - "Shattered Glass" - FM breaks all the glass they made in an angry, determined rise back to the top, eventually rebuilding the glass into some cool sculptural art to keep their artistic trend going. CTJ - I know their show was already a sequel, so instead of a part 3, I'd be totally down if CTJ went on a string of shows feature Disney music....Just think of the possibilities! Time to get those creative juices flowing!

Narration
LHSax replied to anditwasallyellow's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Very controversial subject, but one that's good to have a separate thread to discuss. Personally, I often find narration to be a cop-out. I'd much rather see a show that can convey a concept with music and movement rather than someone having to explain it to me. Maybe that's me being too old school, and there are certainly exceptions to the rule (Crown 13 is one of my few exceptions). If narration is done as something that adds a layer to the music/production then i can live with it, but if it's used as an introduction to a show or movement to explain what's going on (Avon...cough), it bugs me a bit. -

It's simple...we just need a separate category. Regional Super Regional MEGA REGIONAL Grand Nationals (Grand Nationals being smaller is intentional) -

I know we've gushed about Reagan plenty here, but I've been watching "not" Reagan videos on repeat the last few days, and now I WANT TO GUSH ABOUT IT MORE! This show has something for everyone. Particularly, the part after the ballad where the character gets led through the circles and the ostinato develops around them might be one of the most effective marching band moments I've ever seen. This is CLASSIC early 2000's Reagan, and I can't get enough of it. It's just darn good design and it is the perfect integration of musical/visual story telling. The drill as a whole is fantastic, and the recurring visual and musical motifs really tie the whole thing together beautifully. I can't wait to see what kind of impact this show has on the activity in years to come, because it feels era defining to me. This show is going right up on the mantle for top high school shows of the decade for me, right next to (and maybe on top of) FM '16 and Woodlands '13...Guess I can't wait for what 2022 has in store... -

I know there's been a lot of talk about Hebron's ceiling being high due to the difficulty of their music book, and I agree about the high ceiling and potential, but I'll be super curious, even with the additional 2 weeks, if Hebron can truly reach that ceiling. To be fair, I love this show and still think it should be winning music even with the dirt due to the ridiculousness of what their attempting and succeeding to do very well. What I'm extremely curious about is if they reach this ceiling by watering down the book a little bit (lowering the ceiling slightly), or by somehow getting this show at this difficulty to the cleanliness of their competitors. I have no doubt their capable of the latter, but will be interesting to compare for sure.- 1,093 replies

Really excited to see what VR can do with an extra week or two of marching season. Their current staff has proven that they are very capable of milking the most out of these shows during the last couple of weeks each of the last 2 years. Turning the Tables was a 7th-10th place show until they made some pretty magical adjustments in the last couple weeks to really make this show blossom into a medal contender. -
