H-E-B Drumline Contest

Interesting. Impressed to see Richland taking all those captions, but surprised to see that they did it and yet still lost. However, after watching their show, they don't seem quite as strong as last year. Of course, it's still very early. Congrats to John Horn- not that anybody's surprised. -
The schedule came out earlier this week. Here's what we're looking at- Akins (6A)- 1:00 Anderson (6A)- 1:15 Seguin (5A)- 1:30 Del Valle (5A)- 1:45 Hutto (5A)- 2:00 Warren (6A)- 2:15 Cedar Park (5A)- 2:30 McCallum (5A)- 2:45 Georgetown (5A)- 3:00 Vista Ridge (5A)- 3:15 Eastview (5A)- 3:30 Dripping Springs (EXHIBITION)- 3:45 Stony Point (6A)- 4:15 Round Rock (6A)- 4:30 Rouse (6A)- 4:45 Lake Travis (6A)- 5:00 Pflugerville (6A)- 5:15 Belton (6A)- 5:30 Cedar Ridge (6A)- 5:45 Vandegrift (6A)- 6:00 Austin Reagan (EXHIBITION)- 6:15 Awards/Retreat- 6:30 So now that it's official, anyone have any predictions?

It certainly should be fun! To start with, some links to the usual Leander ISD powerhouse bands: Vandegrift's opener (full band): Leander's opener (snare cam): Leander's opener (full band): Vista Ridge's opener (full band): Cedar Park's opener (full band, but on-field angle, so mostly pit): I will say that I'm impressed so far with Leander, although I'm not sure whether they're attending DS or not (it appears they didn't go last year?). I saw Vista Ridge in person Friday, and while their book was pretty dirty, they're playing strong and definitely have potential. Vandegrift and Cedar Park both look really strong again, as expected. EDIT: Sorry for the links instead of easily accessible videos, but I wanted to avoid a ridiculous amount of posts.

To put it in perspective, here are last year's results: 5A: 1) Cedar Ridge- 93.33 (pit, cymbals, tenors) 2) Pflugerville- 91.83 (snares) 3) Lake Travis- 88.17 (basses) 4) Round Rock- 86.17 5) Westlake- 82.5 6) Hendrickson-78.0 7) Belton- 72.5 8) College Park- 71.67 9) Stony Point- 68.33 4A (I'm missing the scores- if anyone has them, feel free to comment): 1) Vandegrift (pit, snares, basses)* 2) McCallum (tenors) 3) Cedar Park (cymbals) 4) Vista Ridge 5) Georgetown 6) Eastview 7) Hutto 8) Rouse *=grand champion

Well, I figured that since the Lone Star Classic topic went pretty well last year, it would be worth it to start a thread about Dripping Springs (which takes place on 9/20/14). First off, here's a link to the DSDC website: http://dsbands.org/dlcontest/index.html The judging panel looks pretty great- Alan Miller, Bill Bachman, and Manny Maldonado. Should be an interesting combination. So, let's discuss! Who's attending this year? Who's going to win? Who might sneak up and surprise some people? In a little while, I'll post some links to groups who have attended in the past or may be attending this year, as well as last year's results. It should give us something to base off of and liven up the discussion a bit! Also, if your group is planning on attending, I would love your honest opinion. *side note: Seguin will be attending this year for the first time ever! We're excited to get a chance to compete this early in the season

Gotta go with Vista Ridge and the Music of Scheherazade. The music and the energy they put into it was just so impressive. I can speak from experience when I say that going on after them is very intimidating. I've had this show on repeat since the season ended!

Props to them from me as well, I saw them in the lot and they're a very solid group. Impressive playing, and a very cool battery book! Looking for good things from them in the future!

All that I know so far is this: PRELIMS Caption Awards: Best Cymbals: Richland Best Basses: John Horn Best Front Ensemble: John Horn Best Tenors: John Horn Best Snares: John Horn FINALS Placement: 1) John Horn 2) Richland 3) Cedar Ridge 4) Vandegrift 5) Plano East If you want to see the full results, they should be posted here sometime later today: http://portal.marcuspercussion.com/portal/LoneStar/Results/tabid/73/Default.aspx On a completely unrelated note, John Horn completely deserved everything they got. They honestly were THAT good. On a completely different level from everybody else there in my opinion, and everybody else was still really good.

That is pretty incredible! The cymbals are ridiculously good every year, i can't figure out how you guys pull it off. Problem is that now you caused a dilemma... I don't know which one is my favorite!

I'll be sad not to see you guys! Your show last year was quite possibly my favorite high school show ever, and this year is amazing as well. You actually topped our five front row marimbas with six!!! Don't want to hazard a prediction quite yet, but I do believe all the Leander ISD schools competing this year should make quite a splash. I also know personally that Seguin is hoping to get back into the top tier of groups contending for finals (we were 7th in 2011, I believe) after a disappointing 11th last year. Should be a great competition in silver I, especially with John Horn in the mix. Good luck at Grand Nats!

2013 Marching Contest Masterlist
NickTheDrummer replied to Xenon's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Sorry, I'm a bit late. 2013 Judson Rocket Review (10/12/13) 4A Placement 1) Seguin HS 2) Brennan HS 3) Brackenridge HS 4A Captions Best Guard: Seguin HS Best Percussion: Seguin HS 5A Placement 1) Smithson Valley HS 2) New Braunfels HS 3) Robert E Lee HS 5A Captions Best Guard: Lee HS Best Percussion: Lee HS Grand Champion: Smithson Valley HS Overall Best Percussion Standings: 1) Seguin HS 2) Brennan HS 3) Lee HS 4) New Braunfels HS 5) Steele HS EDIT: There is no website that I can find. -
In my opinion, anyone out of Area D has a legitimate chance at being a contender. It was a bloodbath yesterday, so many high-quality groups. I think even some of the ones who missed the finals cut (Georgetown, East View, Seguin, Hays) could have been very close to advancing to states had they been in another area, THAT'S how good the competition was. Connally absolutely has a chance- they surprised all of us, I think, by advancing to state, but it was definitely well-deserved.
-
I was wondering if something had gone wrong- they seemed as sure a bet as anyone to advance going into finals.
