  1. Brian Youngblood is writing your drill again with Wes consulting as a visual coordinator.
  2. Don't freak out too much. Bands are only allowed to march for 8 hours a day during the summer per UIL regulations (and only 8 hours total between the last day of school and the first day of summer band). Plus, I'm sure they don't actually spend 12 hours playing and marching once you include breaks, lunch, and dinner. Still, there are quite a few bands that maintain that type of schedule during summer band. As for setting drill, a band can either begin on August 1st or two weeks before the first day of school--whichever comes first.
  3. It'll be in San Antonio, preceding the TBA conference by a day.
  4. I think he meant that sweeping the Area contest is somewhat indicative of how a band might do at State, but that's not to say that earning all five 1st place votes at Region isn't an achievement as well, especially when the competition is so stiff. As was already said, however, the State panel could lean entirely toward Langham Creek's style, entirely toward Coppell's style, or it could be split. It's really far more subjective than it is objective, so there's unfortunately no way to be certain how it will turn out.
  5. Richland tied for 3rd in Region 5: (1) Haltom - Advance to Area (2) Martin - Advance to Area (3) Bowie, Richland, Keller (4) L.D. Bell (5) Fossil Ridge (6) Trinity
  6. Even though Martin didn't advance, that performance of Music for Prague was almost picture-perfect. You should all be extremely proud of pulling off such a difficult piece at an extremely high calibre!
  7. It was brought up in one of our show design meetings in February. Brian Merrill may have changed his mind by now (at least, I assume it's up to him since Tom Shine is no longer directing the marching band), but the person who mentioned it made it sound as if it was quite definite.
  8. Last I heard, Duncanville will be performing "Belshazzar's Feast" by Sir William Walton. I'm not sure about the others, but I would assume Spring and Westfield are both already in the midst of the design process.
  9. Region 20 5A top bands weighing in with straight 1s were: Duncanville (with all 4 bands earning Sweepstakes) Coppell (with top 4 bands earning Sweepstakes) Mansfield Summit (with top 2 bands earning Sweepstakes) Both DeSoto bands and Irving Nimitz also earned Sweepstakes.
  10. You misunderstand me. I wasn't basing my opinion off of a single show. The band I was referring to had an entire lackluster season. Still, this band could pull it all together next year and repeat their success from the past several years. Also, I just want to point out that it's never the show that causes a band to perform badly. It's the preparation level of the group and the abilities of the director and student leadership that directly affect performance quality.
  11. Coppell just had an uncharacteristically nervous performance at State last year, as I think the Area B results can attest to: Prelims: 1 - L.D. Bell, 2 - Coppell, 3 - Duncanville, 4 - Richland Finals: 1 - L.D. Bell, 2 - Coppell, 3 - Duncanville, 4 - Haltom I expect that they'll do very well next year if they continue to improve, along with Marcus and perhaps Richland depending on their show design. Sometimes what they put on the field is just too complex to clean for UIL standards, but it's impressive nonetheless. I'm not sure what to expect from Cedar Park, as they actually recieved a 2 from a judge at marching UIL this year. There's a rumor that a second judge changed his 2 to a 1 after seeing the other 2, but that's just a rumor... The effects that come with a change in directors can never be underestimated. Just look at J.J. Pearce, who received their second consecutive 2 at UIL this year.
  12. It's going to be a little difficult to find scores unless you get them at TMEA or look on the publisher's/distributor's website (such as Boosey & Hawkes or Hal Leonard).
