All five of the music/marching judges from this contest have won a state championship, whether it be marching or Honor Band. They have also been in finals of both multiple times. It's not like any of them is under-qualified, and it certainly isn't uncommon for judges to look for or listen for different things, after all. In the end, all the differences mean is that the bands you're looking at didn't execute their playing and marching styles well enough to overcome native disapproval (such as Dr. Shine hating straight-leg marching technique because he thinks it can't be made to look the same from person to person). -
2014 Show Announcements

Waxahachie HS "Aquaria" - Featuring the music of Claude Debussy, Brian Balmages, Alan Silvestri, Ilan Eshkeri, and original music. We wanted to address our weaker areas with this year's show. Specifically, we wanted to have a much higher GE impact, not have the drill seem so simplistic, and we wanted to identify a few areas where we could let the band loose to just "park and blow". There's quite a bit of choreography compared to our shows in past years, and we're up to set 65 halfway through the ballad (part 3 of 5). Hopefully everyone will enjoy, and, more importantly, we hope the significant style change won't bite us in the butt this first year. -

No band will put out the same sound Coppell does, but that doesn't mean they can't play their own shows cleaner and more musically. If volume were all judges listened to, Coppell would win every contest they go to. -
Marching shows 2012-2013
aaron067 replied to medina5012's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
That's certainly larger than it used to be. My first year to tech in Coppell was 2004, and we marched 181 wind players with 18 guard members and approximately 15 in the drumline, though all the contest programs said there were 300 performers. The numbers they field have been fairly consistent since then, though I think they might have grown to the 200-220 range as far as wind players are concerned in recent years. Without a doubt they're one of the largest marching bands in the state, and the white uniforms only help to increase the perception of lots of kids on the field. Having spent 3 years working nearly full time with the band while I was in college promoted a loyalty to Scott and the program that I don't think I'll ever lose. With that said, I wish them all the best this next year, and I hope the change in design approach produces the success that the staff is looking for. -
Marching shows 2012-2013

Scott decided to bring Wes in for the 2006 Fall season. He was responsible for the ALL white look of the band that year (yes, including the guard), and he also did a tiny bit with visual design. That show was all Hindemith. They finished 7th at State. Then in 2007, they performed a Gershwin show that primarily featured Rhapsody in Blue and Piano Concerto in F. Wes was still involved, but they used the Broken Arrow director for drill design. That's when the visual element of their show really started to shift away from large, curvy shapes that move slowly to something more interesting. They were just shy of finals at BOA San Antonio. In 2008, they performed a Planets show, but I can't say whether they used Wes or not. I believe Nate Nugent was responsible for this drill. They received the Bronze Medal at State. 2009 was the all Resphigi show. Bad arrangements and even worse drill lead to an unsuccessful year at BOA San Antonio. I would be surprised if Wes was involved here, as he had not been involved enough in previous years for the price he charged if I remember correctly. 2010 was the band's first attempt at a truly themed show in recent years, and it did so in the form of Norman Rockwell. It was also the first time in quite a while that that the show featured music from different composers. They earned 5th or 6th place at State. 2011 was a sloppy year for the band because the drill moved, and I mean WAY more than I'm used to seeing from this band. I forget exactly what the theme was, but I know they opened with the Dies Irae section from Verdi's Requiem Mass. As a side note about numbers, I'm interested to see if 270 is the actual number of performers or if it's including alternates. I think they should field around 180-200 wind players. Maybe they're going to have a massive percussion section, or they might have finally overcome the difficulties they were having in recruiting a larger guard. Either way, they have a tough area to get out of, so I know Scott has the band's best interest in mind in the design process. -
TMEA Honor Band 2012

Wow... I'm really excited for Coppell since I worked there all through my college years, but I'm so disappointed for Duncanville. I don't know if this is the first time they haven't made it out of Area, but this is certainly a testament to the ridiculous strength of Area D. -

Thanks Brandon! I knew the opening Strauss and Mozart, and I figured out that the fourth movement is an excerpt from the Sequentia section of the Mozart Requiem. The closer sounds like Beethoven, but I haven't spent much time on that part of it, and I imagine the harpsichord feature is most likely the Bach. If the press articles about the band that year are accurate, those are the other two composers that I haven't accurately identified, so I'm going to work with that.

Centennial Marching Festival Nov. 5

Do we know the remaining prelims results or who made finals? -
So you placed three of the Area D bands in the medal positions, but Lake Travis, which beat both Cedar Park and Vandegrift in prelims and finals at Area, is nowhere in sight? What about Cedar Park and Vandegrift's scores from area. Vandegrift was unanimously 5th in music and 4th in marching, and Cedar Park didn't have the the most consistent placement among the judges either. Also, are you sure you want to place Newman Smith ahead of Waxahachie, Birdville, and Sherman? Waxahachie was first at Area C in both prelims and finals without peer (and was ahead of Newman Smith in prelims at Midlothian if I recall correctly), Birdville came out ahead of Newman Smith at Area, and Sherman was right there as well. Just seems a bit more than a little biased, to be honest. And Dawson, a band that has topped Friendswood at every contest they've both been to, isn't on the list either. Yet, you say Area F looks very strong; although, I'm betting you meant Area D. I suppose my overall impression is that this is more of a hopeful placement list rather than any kind of informed predictions.

Poteet disqualified?????
aaron067 replied to Thekingcmk's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
There are actually two ways to look at this. UIL wanted to make sure Poteet was given every opportunity to ensure compiance with the rules. Since there's no way around the fact that an ineligable student performed with the band they were disqualified just as every other band with an ineligable performer has been disqualified. The second explanation favors Forney quite a bit. Only 15 bands peformed at Area C on Saturday. Had Poteet been disqualified before the contest, only 14 would have peformed and only 2 would have advanced to state: Waxahachie and Pearce. Because Poteet was allowed to compete, 3 band are now advancing and Forney has an opportunity to perform at State that they wouldn't have had if all the rules been followed to the letter. -

Area Competitions!
aaron067 replied to Westandalone's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
It wasn't a simple paperwork issue. Poteet had an ineligible student perform at UIL. They will perform on Saturday, but if they rank in the top 3, their advancement to State is only official pending some kind of appeals hearing on Monday.
