  1. Don't forget that NEISD (the school district that houses both Reagan and Churchill) is opening up a new high school at the beginning of...... next year, I believe? Chambers might lose some good assistant directors to that school's head director position.
  2. No doubt Chambers will enjoy the freedom of not having an 8-hour rule, but will he be able to take the pressure of being two full-time directors? No band can be great without tremendous effort from both staff and students, and Reagan is by no means an exception. At the same time, being the director of the Crossmen probably isn't freeing up his schedule. By the time HS marching season is over, he'll be getting ready for DCI tryouts, then camps, and before long HS concert season will roll in. Then comes summer, and suddenly his break will be gone, replaced with non-stop DCI. I'm wondering if he's bitten off more than he can chew.
  3. Sure, but drinks are on someone else.
  4. Now comes the fun speculating. Here's my first question: Who's gonna be on the staff?
  5. I wouldn't be surprsied if Mark Chambers or Albert Lo contributed to this heavily. As Danpod said, this could be a huge thing for Texas. A "local" division I corps would be an amazing experience, and the Crossmen would bring just that to the table. You can bet that if SA is the focus point, that Reagan and Churchill kids will dominate for awhile, but you can bet on kids from all over Texaswould jump on this opprotunity. This could mean a lot for Texas music.
  6. Braces are usually a big setback for any brass players, whether they're getting put on or taken off. All you can really do is basically what TRtrumpet said: practice, a lot. Start with simple warm-up techniques (long tones, sirens, etc) and take it slow. You should be back up to where you were in a few weeks, max.
  7. If you want to speak in terms of physics, then the trombone is the loudest-possible instrument, based on its design and layout. However, whether the players are louder than another section or not is up to the sections (and ultimately the players) more so than the instrument.
  8. I play the baritone and the euphonium........... >_> OK, now that the corny joke's done... I switched from trumpet, and every now and then I'll pick one up again. 'Tis always fun to reminisce.
  9. If you're asking about politics within a band, then it depends on the director. Yes, there's a heirarchy of leadership positions, but as to "She just got picked because she sucks up" then that's not always the case. At a particular school I was at, I remember a girl being very goody-goody with the directors, but being one of the first ones cut during drum major tryouts. For section leader/drum major/officer tryouts, if the directors pick it then it's all up to them. The situation could very well become politics, though, if the students had the lone voice in elections. Then it simply becomes a popularity contest; you can't know a possible candidate after only a few years. If you're asking about politics within competative systems, then many people would agree, for BOA. UIL doesn't have politics so much as it prefers certain types of shows over others. Reagan will probably never do exceptionally well at UIL (and by that I mean break top 5 at State) because their show design is simply too creative and GE appealing, something UIL doesn't factor in. Duncanville, however, has done very well for at least a decade, probably more (and que the vets giving specific info...). Many would argue, though, that BOA plays a lot of politics, such as with Reagan. Surf the arcives of the BOA forums, and you'll find plenty of rants about Reagan's use of electronics and choreography as being cheap ways to get easy GE points. The debate still continues. Politics within a band? Depends on the selection process for leadership position, and the directors themselves. Politics within band competitions? I'm not sure of that myself.
  10. Nyquil is a wonderful thing, since I sometimes get problems going to sleep, along with horrible allergies. I don't find the taste too bad, and the relief is definately worth it.
  11. Unfortunately, I've not had much more than Newtonian physics so far.
  12. See Fortisimo's above post.
  13. It's really a win-win situation for long-time Spurs fans; 1) The Spurs win and move on, or 2) The Mavs win, and Avery Johnson, as well as a Texas team, moves on. Hey, if they ain't the Spurs, let them be from Texas!
  14. I've heard that the PS3 is going to come in $500 and $600 packages, with the $600 having some extra features, more powerful hardware, etc. While Sony has insisted that the market will still be willing to pay this amount, I know I'm not. I saw Nintendo as a dying franchise (much as I love it) and expected for the Wii to take a sharp decline in favoritism (especially after the name-change), but with the PS3's price and the Wii's innovative controller, it looks like Nintendo will be having a good few years, at least until the next generation of consoles.
  15. And long, long ago, the Celtics used to be really good. But it still counts.
  16. Yeah, the Spurs beat the Pistons last year (in 7), but they had also split the regular season matchup (Spurs won once, 80-77, Pistons the other, 101-110). This year, the Spurs (I'm sorry to say) got beat pretty bad both times (70-85, 68-83). The Spurs tend to kick it up in the postseason, but then again the Pistons have pretty well beaten anyone who's come in their way (74-54 Pistons/Cavs with 2:20 left in the 3rd right now). I'm not optimistic, but I'll keep hope every step of the way. (Please correct me if my inferences from your post were wrong) On a side note, I still stand on Spurs in 6 over Mavs. Go Spurs go!
  17. No, because if I want to drive something large enough to plow over cattle with ease, I'll join the army. It's unnecessarily big, and gets far too few miles-per-gallon. And anything pop-stars do/own/say/etc doesn't determine anything in my life.
  18. As die-hard of a Spurs fan I am, I'm not sure that the Spurs will be able to beat the Pistons. For that matter, I'm not sure if anyone can. Especially the Cavaliers, after losing to the Pistons by almost 30 points.
  19. Same; I had better things to do.
  20. Spurs in 6. And screw whoever decided the Spurs would get less than 36 hours between games.
