2022 HEB Marching Contest (Oct. 1)
Vidal28 replied to Toasted Almond's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I would say that Coppell had a similar, Marcus-y sound and subdued quality to it, the way they’re both going about their sound is quite comparable, both have their exciting moments along with a very nice orchestral quality to them, and they’ll both be heavily rewarded for it -

Think there’s about 7 clear contenders for top half here at this contest, timber creek is one of them! I’ll rate my experience of them as incomplete as the electronics breakdown plaguing nearly every band today continues, they weren’t able to get them online for their soloists at any point of the show, here’s hoping less of that happens for every group tonight, it’s been a bit rough for nearly every band today!! -

👀Forney coming in, you know they’re a great all-around group, strong in guard and percussion, the winds came out firing in their first opening hit with Symphony in Bb, they were awesome and the “keyhole” visual motif they have in their uniforms, props, drill sets is really fun to look at, just eye candy! They’re a program that’s gonna do really well at every contest they go to, the only thing that I feel detracted from their performance was some front ensemble synth sounds that were a bit distracting from everything that was going on, lots of head turns to the speakers, and perhaps a bit too much reverb on the soloists, other than that no complaints!! -

Only playing up to their ballad, but woooo Coppell!! Y’all are doing awesome work, a bit more subdued in your approach despite some bombastic opening material, love the uniforms, the ballad was amazing, go sax soloist!! Very lovely, they’re a group that is daring the judges to give ‘em a tick on the music sheets with how composed and calm they sound. Looking forward to hearing y’all again tonight and next weekend at BOA! -

Wakeland with the performance of the day so far! something you’re probably gonna be saying more than once at this contest, but they’re looking to be right in the thick of it with Keller, Prosper, Marcus, and Coppell. Gonna be really tough to pick a winner between those 5. Wakeland is in great form today, everything was great from them, big size, power, and great solo moments, again more technical difficulties with their soprano soloists, but you didn’t need a mic to know they were killing it! Tremendous job Wakeland, good luck in finals and all your contests moving forward! -

Prosper was awesome!! Kudos to their trumpet section for their opening, very good matching and tone for them for being so exposed, many great moments for other parts of the ensemble, but being on side 1 I got an earful of them, they were great! Only playing up to their ballad here, there were some technical difficulties with the mics for their soloists but I’m sure they’ll have that cleaned up for their finals run! -

Keller! Very solid as always, tackling some difficult and quite familiar material in their opener, you’ll know it when you hear it👀 probably the spot that needs the most work along with their closer which I assume has a tag ending still as they’re still adding to their show. They had great sounds and energy throughout and they’ll definitely be dangerous through the rest of the season with more cleaning, and I have no doubt they will! -

I have seen NOTHING!! Besides the occasional video popping up either way early season or backfield video, or just a few from this past weekend’s contests, I’ll definitely be at HEB either this weekend, the next or both though to get my fill😂 Edit: looks like I’m going to both as I’m making my way up to Pennington right now, whoop whoop! -

Haven’t heard anything from them yet, only their show title, don’t know their repertoire for this year, but I am very excited to see them at HEB next week for sure!🔥🔥 -
Mansfield Preview of Champions (Sept. 24)

Didn’t know about this…dang. Wonderful additions for trinity, but losing a whole staff like that in one year, I can’t imagine how that impacts the students… -

Vidal28 replied to LeanderMomma's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I’ll echo many folks’ sentiments about Cedar Park, from that far of a vantage point, in the video we were showed from tonight’s performance, it feels like they’ve elevated their music performance SEVERAL notches!! Incredibly, incredibly solid/impressive to where I feel only a few schools will be able to match their clarity and power by November based on where they already are now. I have no qualms putting them as a clear medalist/potential winner at this contest and bare minimum top half at BOA SA finals RIGHT NOW. Only going up from there, but that’s my prediction of their floor for me👀👀 -
UIL Area B 2022
Vidal28 replied to SEAstar23's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
They’re always a very solid all-around band, and the Mansfield schools as a whole are often a bit overlooked, but I hope they all begin to make their mark more this year and the coming years! -

Haven’t even found a video online of my alma mater yet which is a bummer, I’ve seen it in person already but I’m always cranky looking them up on YouTube but finding nothing😡😡 I also don’t think COVID’s hit DFW contests that hard, but we can expect a slight bit of drop off in entries for a year or two in the local contests. This contest still looks really healthy despite a slightly fewer amount of entries compared to pre-COVID, and there were a TON of entries in the HEB percussion contest schedule from what I saw👀 -

Love seeing this hype for a group more than fully capable of reaching even a higher trajectory than they have been ascending towards the past few years!! I’m game for an upset of the typical LISD domination of DFW competitions! We’ll just have to see what everyone else brings to the table too👀👀 -

I noticed their JV group in the corner there but even then sheesh the competition band itself is HUGE!! -
2022 BOA Houston (Sept. 24)
Vidal28 replied to LeanderMomma's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
As a result of that, even me as an alumni have no idea where to put them, I think with a close to full show by Houston they can make finals, I just hope they’re able to grow throughout the season, and continue to clean. I’ve only heard their opener on the field, and they handled themselves well for their first football game performance in front of a crowd. A little softer sound than either their 2021 group or 2019 group, but I feel less is more with them this year. Placing well at this Houston show will definitely bode well for them in their October contests so that’s my hope!!🙏🙏 -
2022 Show Announcements
Vidal28 replied to FaultLineBlues's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Looking very much forward to hearing them at some point, there’s probably a show announcement with repertoire out there somewhere, and I would love to be more intrigued if I knew that and get even more excited, I just don’t like not knowing any details!😂 I wanna listen to some show rep of every school out there👀 Edit: I’m also a bit of a critic of what my former school puts out a few years removed from graduating, but I’m always optimistic in their opportunities to grow during their season and moving forward as I do know it is summer previews! -

@fantastic marcherHiiii!! The forum should liven up more once the summer band camps come to a close and some parent previews leak out!😂 https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1RaB1Yq5s3hEoWgTIsKvqqkesImeODeWOhYQ9BiqNNww/edit?usp=sharing this is from a different thread. Not sure if it’s an exhaustive list but it has a lot of shows on there! -
2022 TMEA Honor Band Thread
Vidal28 replied to Rubisco's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
A bit late to the party but YESSSSS!!! I couldn’t really see where they would be the bridesmaid at all this year seeing how terrific they continually performed their marching show in the fall, I had no doubt it would translate into the concert season, and it did!! CONGRATS TO HEBRON!!! -
Favorite Source Music
Vidal28 replied to FaultLineBlues's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Definitely reviving this thread because I definitely have some thoughts!! I feel only right for me to start with my HS alma mater James Martin 2013: I really liked every musical selection they had in their show the year just before my freshman year. “Aurora Awakes” by John Mackey, String Quartet No. 4 by Bela Bartok, and “Elegy for a Young American” by Lo Presti. My first marching show I’ve ever watched and to enjoy every selection in the program really was a blessing as it got me invested and loving band ever since. 2014: One i actually got to play, Prokofiev’s Cinderalla suite, “Introduction” and “Midnight”, such a beautiful and soft opening and climax in both pieces, they’ve stuck with me ever since and I hopefully never forget them. Fun tidbit, my school and Hebron had very uncomfortably similar shows that year😂we weren’t as good as them, but it was still a good show imo haha Hebron 2015: Speaking of Hebron! Their “Seduces me” ballad, just fantastic, very mysterious, dark and powerful!! 2019: “The Impossible Dream” from…not sure where it originated and I wish to move on haha. “A Million Dreams” from the greatest showman was really great for them that year too!! 2021: ohhhhh man, Hebron went BIBLICAL with their Church Windows opening, absolutely and completely adore it, only Hebron pulls it off as amazingly as they did, I can’t say enough how awesome this opening was, GOOD LORD!! Castle 2017: Love love love both “One Day I’ll Fly Away” and “Benedictus” both very very gentle and solemn offerings for a show that truly was able to touch me and many others Flower Mound 2016: FREEBIRD!!! Made every Clarinet student that year shudder for sure!!😂 2017: Metrópolis 1927, just a great piece as a whole, and a show stopper indeed, FloMo had a tremendous amount of color on the field that year 2021: one piece that I had no idea where it was from but it was a part of their preshow!! Ice Dance from the movie Edward Scissorhands, haven’t watched the movie either, but I really liked the very gentle warm opening that it offered to begin the show, like it a lot! -
Okkkkk, so to start off with, I am more of a young guy so my favorites will mostly reflect that👀👀 Crown-2012(🧊) and 2016(🤠) are my absolute favorites, the shows that I watch the most from them. Love the story of Relentless, and the ferocity of both hornlines, I can’t get enough of hearing either one, one of the most glorious moments of DCI ever occurring in 2012 in that triangle set, a show full of the most glorious hornline moments I’ve EVER heard. honorable mentions are 2008, 2013, and 2017(for the hornline, not really the show haha) Bloo- of the first shows kids around the time I got started with marching band was of course 2014 Tilt, is still awesome to this day!! other favorites are 2015(so much Kinetic noises) 2016(😉) and 2018(🎙)2013-15 Bloo era uniforms are probably my favorite all time from the activity, they are so GOOD!! SCV- my all time favs of theirs have to be 2018 and 2016, as a previous poster has mentioned, that 2016 opener is gorgeous, one of my all-time favorites, all props given to the pit and hornline for setting that very gentle scene. 2018 is one of my all-time favorite shows that I’ve gotten to watch live, that Mello line was GODLIKE, awesome venue really close to the field and the seats I picked put them right in front of me, I loved that show!! Another favorite would go all the way back to their 1989(🎭)show as well, I really do like that one a lot!! Cavies- 2010(🤪🌎)is probably my favorite from them, I do like a lot of their dynasty-era shows but they don’t really crack my favorites, but 2010 is definitely one I can rewatch a ton and be entertained by all the character work alone! BD- 2017(🦋💎) yeahhh I wasn’t a big blue devils fan in my youth(several years ago🙃) but my FAVORITE from theirs has to be metamorph, the most self-referential one can get, and I am actually a big fan of those kinds of shows done right ‘cause there’s a tremendous amount of pride and heart that went into that production and it just comes out in the performance, a show in my opinion that just gets better and better the further in you get. Amazing ballad, instrument features, the ballad reprise in the closer is actually I think even more emotionally impactful, just a great show Blue Knights- Honorable mentions right of the bat will go to 2015(🅱️cause) and 2019(🧠) but my all-time favorite from them has to be 2014, That One Second, very mature subject matter performed with the care that it requires, just a full put release of emotion throughout every part of this show, love the music, the impact moments hit. The opening and closer are some of my favorite in DCI, one of the shows I really would’ve loved to see live to experience. Phantom- This is getting long, but I feel my favorites need no explanation, ‘03(🎶🎵🎶) and ‘08(🛡) fan beloved favorites, will definitely keep my eye on Phantom and what they bring for all of us to enjoy the next several years as they hit their stride again! Cadets- I think for them I’d have to go with 2015(🔟)amazing hornline, loved the velocity and the classical approach they take with this show, very great show to simply listen to🔊 Boston-finally ending this post with a fan favorite in general which is SOS, fantastic story, the savagery that is so well depicted in much of the beginning and middle of the show, and the mournful melancholy that follows is amazing to follow and then the hope that comes with the rescue at the end, BAC was definitely there on the field and in the hearts of many after their show was done!

School districts state wide could be allocated more funds for travel if that’s what they want smaller schools to do every year😉 I really don’t see why some people think funding for music is a problem of “the few” when there’s lots of stress that goes with even the biggest bands in the state and their fundraising efforts. No matter how small or big your ensemble is, the costs of travel, lodging etc. are still abundant and expensive, and making that a yearly expense when many groups wish to stay in their local area and keep their costs lowered with just shooting for a 1 at region and that typically being the end of their season, an area contest is also added on to that every year now, which for some groups in more widespread areas and regions also require extensive traveling as well. Not every area is DFW, Austin, SA, and Houston.

Hebron Appreciation Thread
Vidal28 replied to bandgeek7874's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I’ll just pull out some stats for how well they did in Area auditions: A Hebron student was first chair in: Piccolo, Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Alto Sax, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Contrabass Clarinet The first 5 trumpet chairs were from Hebron, which didn’t really surprise me as we all heard how good their trumpet section was in their marching show, compared to their main area competitors, and when you’re talking about Marcus and Flower Mound that says a lot👀 They had the second chair in three other sections not already named: bass clarinet, euphonium and horn with several sections having multiple students as well. What a great year for them, and I hope soon they can cap it off with a TMEA Honor band invitation soon! -
One thing too that some people overlook is that Woodwinds are true eager beavers and there would be many HS and University woodwind students gnawing at the teeth to have an opportunity to be a part of the DCI tour experience, and probably being a very prominent and important part of a production as well. The audition process would bring amazingly talented musicians, and I personally enjoy standout woodwind solo or ensemble moments in HS marching band, strictly talking about enhancing the musical product on the field, the inclusion of woodwinds bring nothing but positive contribution in my view.
