Two things... 1.) Those outrageously radical people that have nothing better to do than to trouble the world by saying that it is offensive to say "Merry Christmas." And yes, I have room to talk since I don't celebrate Xmas, but that's another story. 2.) Xmas music...every....waking...second...in public. I think I have heard just about every variation of Jingle Bells and Carol of the Bells that I would ever be interested in listening to.

BOA Videos
trumpetman1288 replied to Serardian's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Wouldn't certain composers appreciate having their music performed though? If you think about it, some composers acquire publicity through BOA, therefore increasing their potential sales. By the way, aren't schools supposed to acquire the rights to songs before putting them on the field? I remember before last marching season that we could not perform our opener because we didn't have the rights to it yet (luckily, we got them before we set our drill). I know not every single school follows the rule, but if a composer or arranger gives the school the right to perform their music, does it not mean that BOA has the right to record the performance? The band's performance does go under production after all. The video's price isn't due to the music, but rather the quality of the video. Can you clarify that for me, because I can see both sides of the argument, but in my opinion, it seems that the sales of videos would benefit composers more so than hurt them. Oh, and another question...I understand that it is illegal to perform a piece without the proper permission, but would you still need permission if you use an arrangement of a piece? I mean in the sense of how Key Poulan does his arrangements. How does that all work out? -
Band in College
trumpetman1288 replied to Serardian's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
I'm thinking I am going to major in engineering, but I am STRONGLY considering minoring in music as well. Band has grown on to me in such a strange way, but if I had decided to remain playing football, I would probably feel the same way about football that I do about band right now. I just hope I don't wind up like one of our directors who originally wanted to major in engineering then, due to scheduling conflicts, winds up as a music major. -
Guilty... Did that sophomore year with our ensemble. I was playing the 4th part to it...and most of it was between a low G and a C...which translates to a high A and a D. All this was before I could actually get a D out at will...twas fun.

funny audition stories
trumpetman1288 replied to Nancy08's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
It's the last etude and we do our final 30 second warm up. This guy who was supposed to go third suddenly gets a nose bleed. So he tells the monitor and leaves. All of us are trying to hold back our laughter because nothing like this ever happens. So he comes back and auditions last. He starts playing and gets about halfway through...and he just cracks up. Then the whole room laughs because they know what it was. So then he just finishes it and leaves. -
This year's area finals. To know that my freshman year we had hardly little support from even our band parents, to having a sea of people from the community, not just band parents, wearing the school colors and cheering during our performance. Then watching people in the stands begin to rise as the last chord was playing to watching a relatively full crowd standing and cheering to a deafening loudness as we brought our horns down. Best feeling of my life.

I have too many... Star 1991 SCV- 1989, 1999, and 2000 Cavies- 2002, 2003, and 2006 Phantom- 1996, 2003, 2006 And one show I haven't been able to actually see, but I love the audio track I came across one time, Cadets 1983.

Chruchill???
trumpetman1288 replied to bored2damax's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
It happened at BOA SA too?! Crazy... You should have seen it at BOA Houston though...that was QUITE a crowd reaction there. I was just sitting there trying to actually listen to what they were playing, and people wouldn't stop talking about it for a good 30 seconds... -
All-State process

I missed region band by a chair My chops had a different opinion about how I wanted to play, and so I did horridly at at my tryouts... At least I get a nice little patch that says "district band"... -
Despite their success, I would feel bad to be a part of Bell's band this year...they had two "shortcomings" of finishing second in the two most important contests in the nation (yes, UIL is that important ). Of course, finishing second at these contests is not a shortcoming in the least bit, but I am sure they felt like they had an unstoppable band with the show they were pulling this year. Congrats to them on a great year and once again representing this state very well. Since Bell is a band of trends though, they will definitely win it next year...just look at their records for UIL and BOA. UIL: 2000 champ, 2002 silver, 2004 champ, 2006 silver, 2008 (will be champ ) BOA: 2005 3rd place, 2006 2nd place, 2007 (it's only logical to assume what will happen)

Yeah, what you said...99% water and minus all the gooiness that spit has...

Russian Christmas Music....call our band crazy, but we attempted to put that out in a concert with a week to prepare it. It wasn't that bad of a performance, but there were still some minor issues that another week would have helped out...but yeah, I loved that song. We are currently in the middle of band placements, so we still have no idea about what we are playing.

Mixture of both, but more so water...and I can testify to that too. On cold days for marching season, most people will blow into their horns to keep it warm...and what do you know...you have to empty your spit valve long before you have even played a note!

If You Could...
trumpetman1288 replied to bossman's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
It was a joke in our band about the "ultimate" BOA show... It would be this dark, intense show and as a sort of closer, the drummers would play Sacrificial Rite...and then the whole band would kill itself. Big time GE points for us. The only problem is, that if the band were to win, no one would be there to accept it.... -
Our football team is...um...not too great this year. They are currently 2-7 and 0-5 in district. This will be the first time in 6 years that they do not make playoffs. Quite a shame too because they were AWESOME my freshman year...district, bi-district, and area champs and a regional finalist in our last year in 4A. Now they are in the sewer of the district.

UIL 3A State Finals
trumpetman1288 replied to 3Aobserver's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Ah...sooooo close for Hidalgo...I was rooting for them to make finals....I liked their opener when I had seen it (it was The Incredibles!!!). The story with Hidalgo's former director was that there was an incident between him and a female student (I will leave it at that and not go into details, but that was why he lost his job and why he was unable to get another job in a school setting). Despite this, he was the best thing to happen to Hidalgo's band even though many students quit because...well, you know how it is when a good director comes into a band and tries to completely turn the program around for the better...not everyone bought into it. I bet a lot of them were kicking themselves after seeing he turned the band into two time state champs. Even though he had a little run in with some problems, his death was extremely unfortunate and he is still greatly missed by many. All in all, he genuinely was a great guy. -

It's not done yet (lord knows when that will be), but when it is, it is uploaded as... Sharyland 2003- La Fiesta Mexicana Or just do a search under "sharyland" and you should get it. Check back and let me know if it ever shows up...hopefully it will be sometime soon. -
El Salon Mexico
trumpetman1288 replied to joshie washie's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
I do! Just letting you know, it's not a very beefy version...in fact, it was from back when we were 4A (my freshman year) and we weren't all the great. It's a cross of all three movements from La Fiesta and El Salon, so it might not be quite what you are expecting. Just let me know how I can send it because I'm not quite sure how... *edit* When I get to send it to you, just to save you some time, the sections of the recording that are from El Salon are from 2:53-3:37 and from 5:40-7:15, a grand total of 2 minutes and 23 seconds. And GOSH have we come a long way from then...our band has easily doubled in size and the musical demand is so much greater. Thanks for reminding me of how much we have changed **edit edit!!** Currently uploading on youtube.... -
Some people play football (we could probably beat our varsity team this year...they are 0-6 in district), wall ball, and ultimate frisbee. Whenever directors are gone, we have nothing to do, or when the end of the year comes around, we will bring DDR, Halo, and Smash Bros and play. We have had a number of SSB tournaments.....
