I agree! They might not be as good as they were in 2010-2014 but this was a step in the right direction. I thought their baritone soloist was one of the best solos of the *very short* day.

Lehman has also made significant improvements in the past couple of years. I would not be surprised to see them in the 12-15 range.

Glad to see that Pflugerville placed so high after a couple seasons of low teen placings at BOA Austin!

I second Robert E. Lee 2016! I would also add Keller Central 2016, Lake Travis 2013 (not at SA but still underrated), Pflugerville 2014, as well as Anderson 2013!

Statistically speaking, Anderson should take one of the last two spots because they have made finals consistently in the past (making state in 2010, missing finals w/ Round Rock in 2012 but making finals again in 2014 and 2016) However, there are some other bands that could steal the spot from Anderson such as Hays, Lehman, and Austin, as Anderson has unfortunately seen a "slump" in placement in the past two-ish years. It also wasn't too long ago that Akins was consistently making area finals, and they even made state finals. Could we see a resurgence of Akins as an area finalist? I say it's possible! Anderson actually did attend in 2011 and made finals. I think you're thinking of 2012 when Anderson went to St. Louis, and they still attended San Antonio after that.

Looks like UIL realignment just came out! In the greater Austin area, it looks like Pflugerville (consistent Area D 6A finalist) moved down to 5A, and Austin High moved up to 6A. Westlake and Lake Travis (TMEA Area F) moved out of their district with Leander and Vandegrift back into the district of Bowie and Anderson in 6A (TMEA Area D) so I wonder if they will continue to compete in Area F or if they will switch completely to Area D. I always found it confusing as to how they did these realignments. Vandegrift, Westwood, and Anderson are all extremely close to each other (I'd say within 5 miles) in Northwest Austin, yet they all three are in different districts, while Hays and Lake Travis are about 45 minutes away from each other yet they are in the same district. Can't wait to see what's in store for next year!

Completely shocked by how low their visual placement was at BOA competitions! I thought it was just fantastic!

I just want to mention that Austin High (Austin, TX) has had vast improvements in the past year or so. I remember back in 2014 Area D 6A where they got close to last, and I don't think anyone expected them to make area finals, let alone state. I would keep an eye on them for a dark horse for state finals. Their UIL video is wonderful. McCallum is also a contender that has had vast improvements in the past years as well.

Wait, no cypress falls in finals?

One band I'm really looking forward to seeing is Mustang (Oklahoma). Such improvement over the years!

Was anyone else surprised that Lake Travis was the 10th place band in prelims? Weren't they 11th at BOA Austin? Just kinda surprised me.

Suprised to see legacy so low. Several years ago, I remember them being contenders for BOA SA finals.

Shout out to Pflugerville for being one (well, actually two) spots away from finals! I don’t think pville has been that close to making BOA finals since 2013 where they made BOA Austin finals. Also great job Vista Ridge for a phenomenal performance and start to the season! Way to represent the greater Austin area!

Excited to see three Texas bands attending this year! Anderson (Austin, TX) Cypress Falls (Houston, TX) Westwood (Austin, TX) I bet all three could probably make finals. I looked at the previous score sheets and I found that: Anderson got 5th at St. Louis in 2012, most notably beating Blue Springs and Union in GE. Cypress Falls just made San Antonio finals this past year, which speaks for itself. Westwood hasn't attended St. Louis before, but got 9th at Atlanta in 2015, and has beaten bands like Round Rock are area competition before. Broken Arrow, Blue Springs, and Owasso are all attending this year's St Louis competition. Should be a good one!
