  1. Our band is at UIL State this week....on the way home, my family is going to swing on over to Lockhart. May have to pull over for a nap on the way home, though....
  2. This was my thought, too....that wall of sound that hit you. This was my "holy-cow-Texas-marching-bands-are-so-much-better-than-other-states!!" moment.
  3. NOOOO!!! Never, ever, ever feel like this is a Texas forum. This is a BAND forum...it's wonderful that Avon came to BOA and I hope they make it back again soon! You guys are incredible....congratulations on Avon's placement!!
  4. That's great....and I'll give you the Mansfield result but I'd love to see them head to head. Until then, we'll have to agree to disagree. Centennial is great....like I said earlier, they were incredible at Mansfield...I LOVED them. But unless you've seen Richland, Vandergrift, John Horn, Cedar Park, Plano East and Round Rock in the same contest, you haven't seen the best in the state.
  5. They're fantastic but I'm not sure they're the best in 5A...Richland's drumline is incredible. Are they going to the Lonestar Drumline competition in November?
  6. I'm a 6 year band-dad veteran....the freshman year is a bit of a whirlwind. I don't know if this is your first year as a band parent...if it is, take every chance to enjoy this. It flies by...you'll turn around and your kid is marching their last show. If you haven't done it yet, I would encourage you to get involved as a volunteer...there's no better way to get to know these amazing kids. They are truly the best kids in every school. Congrats to your child's band and best of luck in the future!!
  7. They absolutely deserve a spot!!! I anticipate it will be a serious move, too....not just #30 or something like that. This will be a leap into the rankings.
  8. A long time ago, I tried to tell everyone that Haltom was gonna make some noise in Atlanta. Wow....did they EVER!!! Congrats to Haltom!!!
  9. Exactly...let's remember that many of the people here are probably kids who are pumping up and excited about their own bands. AND RIGHTFULLY SO!! I want every kid in every band to have the passion to say "yeah...our program is great!!". All those years ago, no one could convince me that my band wasn't the best....of course, we weren't...but that didn't matter at the time. To the kids on this board...I don't care if you have 20 people in your band of 300. What you do is special and every parent on here is incredibly proud of the work that you have put in. That's what makes marching band special....we pull for each other.
  10. Heh....well...if you find a Texas school district that puts as much emphasis on the Fine Arts as they do football, please let me know because I would like to salute them. I can't say for sure but I'm fairly certain that that HS football players don't have to pay along the lines of $1,000.00 in fees just to play football....
  11. Yeah...I see your point but the fact that Texas does have restrictions make things like Texas bands finishing in the top 10 or even winning Grand Nationals all the more impressive. You have to wonder what Hornrank would look like if everyone had the 8 hour rule.
  12. Wow....you must be very confident in Richland!! Just messin' with you...Cedar Park is the standard. It would be a huge upset for anyone else to win it.
  13. Trust me...I'm not saying Prosper isn't great. We're about to find out at 5A state....it's a pretty widely held belief that Cedar Park is going to win 5A. Beat Cedar Park for the state title and then we'll talk. Winning HEB is great and Prosper should be very proud. But getting 9th at a blood-bath contest like BOA San Antonio (like Cedar Park - 2016) is a completely different thing.
  14. The props....mother of things great and small....THE PROPS!!! Those poor parents....
  15. There was a Steve Martin movie back in the 80s called "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels". My reaction to the music being played and the sound they make is the same as Martin's reaction to Michael Caine's house. "Wow! Wow!! All I can say is.....WOW!!!" Now...that being said. I'm not a fan of the props....with a band that strong, ya just...don't...need all of that!! Further, I'm not a big fan of dissonance so the music isn't "my thing". That doesn't mean it's not incredible. Judging from that video, I would definitely say Tarpon is stronger by quite a bit. Incidentally, what are the practice limits on Florida schools? Anyone know? Do they have a "UIL rule" in Florida? I was shocked to see the enrollment numbers for Tarpon and how small it was.
  16. The one thing I do know.....none of these bands have seen temperatures like they will see on Saturday. Saturday morning - low 40s High Saturday - low/mid 60s Saturday night - Clear - low 40 degrees BUNDLE UP, EVERYONE!!!
  17. Have you seen Centennial? I've seen both....I'm no band director or judge but Centennial is better. Their drumline is really, really solid.
  18. With all due respect, I just don't see Prosper that high. Yes, Prosper won HEB....I'm sure they are great (we will find out in the next couple of weeks) and have made great strides over the last couple of years but Keller finished 5th in 6A state last year...ahead of Bell, Reagan, Leander and The Woodlands. If you know anything about Texas marching bands, you know that is some insanely, great competition.
  19. Richland Aledo aaaannnnd... Burleson Centennial Could be a good race between Centennial, Azle, Newman-Smith and Birdville, though.
  20. I know nothing about enrollment in the area but with the explosive growth in Frisco, will all of their schools be 6A with the next UIL realignment?
