Holiday Giving
gregorydf01 posted a topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Here is another reason I love Band so much and am very proud of the Vista Ridge organization this holiday season! Earlier this year at BOA West Texas the Vista Ridge band performed after the Estacado Band, the Estacado band is around 30 to 50 members, Vista Ridge (Students, Parents, directors, boosters) were so inspired by the passion for music that Estacado demonstrated that they had to do something for them. Please see the attach news link for what was done. Great story for this Christmas season! https://www.everythinglubbock.com/video/austin-area-hs-donates-over-5000-to-the-estacado-band/4175266/-

2019 BOA San Antonio
gregorydf01 replied to CTJBandPops's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Two things now that I opened my eyes enough and read it correctly. 1) Yes it would have been fantastic to see Reagan at Grand Nat's. One of the best things I ever saw on the field and I love the show. I agree that has to be planned a year in advance at least so it's just would have been at this point. 2) I do believe it is possible and a good thing for Semi Finals to be in San Antonio (sorry Dan). It has to however make financial sense for BOA and I think we have enough bands and interest now that it should be compelling for BOA to look at. I don't think we have ever shown enough bands going to Grand Nat's from Texas to consider that as a offset for not doing Semi in Texas. It cost's too much for larger groups of bands to do this regularly but it is great when we do get to send some! -

Darn it, I did miss read the thread, sorry I was thinking about Semi Finals, not about Reagan going to Grand Nats. My apologies for the confusion but if you want to talk about Semi Finals and if the $'s make sense for BOA that is what I was thinking about. -

I was not talking about attending Grand Nat's but an earlier thread about giving $'s to BOA to BOA to do a Semi Final in Texas. My post is about that not Grand Nat's. It's about Semi Finals in Texas. Sorry it was taken out of context and I should have quoted more of the prior thread as some new items posted that confused this. Just saying that if we want Semi Finals in Texas it has to make financial sense for BOA to do that and that I believe we are getting the the # of attendees that want to attend that it should start to make sense. -

I don't think it is either giving them money to change their mind or nightmare logistics solutions that will change this. If the contest shows that it will generate enough income with the added bands to attend and that the change will increase the revenue over cost they will consider it. I believe we are now hitting a threshold number of bands that want to attend and If I was a betting man I would put some money out that the money picture is starting to look better and real consideration might be sooner than we think. -

Just glad the mic’s worked for the solos, Someone left a water bottle by the soundboard prior to going into the dome and it spilled on the soundboard. You did not get to hear all the pre show or front ensemble, but the solo’s worked. Hope we can fix for finals! -

Ode to the Roadie’s on the night before BOA 'Twas the night before BOA San Antonio, when all through the Band Hall not a creature was stirring, not even a Tuba; The Uniforms were hung on the racks with care, in hopes that morning would soon be there; The students were nestled all snug in their beds; While visions of Standing Ovations danced in their heads; And mamma in her show shirt, and I in mine too, had just settled our brains for a short winter's nap, When out on the band-pad there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen dew, gave a luster of midday to objects below, When what to my wondering eyes did appear, but a large Band Semi with a driver so lively and quick, I knew in a moment he must be the head Roadie. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, and he whistled, and shouted, and called the other Roadie’s by task: "Now, Front Ensemble! now, Large Prop! now Instruments and Podium’s! On, Electronics! on, Uniforms! on, Props and Catch-all! To the top of the trucks! to the bottom of the trucks! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!" As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, they meet with no obstacle, so up to the Fast Lane they flew with the Trucks fully loaded, and the Head Roadie too— And then, in a twinkling, I heard at the Alamodome the roaring and screeching of each semi truck. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, out of the cab came the head roadie with a bound. He was dressed in Black and Red, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tussled with sweat from his work; A bundle of instruments he had flung on his back, and he looked like a one-man-band just ready for a show. His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a quick smile that spread when he laughed like a jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke to the team and they went straight to his work, They emptied all the trucks; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the staging area they all rose; they sprang to position, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight— “Into the Dome we go, and to all a good show!” -

My wife Graduated from North Mesquite in 83, small world. She was in the Drill Team though and not the band, but give her credit that she did marry a Band guy! -

I was a tabulator at a contest and we saw that a Judge gave some downright mean comments on the sheets, the contest head talked with the judge prior to the sheets going to the bands and the judge apologized about the comments, kept the same score but gave a new sheet with better and more objective feedback. These judges end up in some very long days and hours and have to give ton's of concentration all day long. It's a wonder we don't see more issues. Most of what I have seen in the booth during contests is a group of professionals working hard to be objective, accurate and helpful. -

So is it like Bert said: "Winds in the east, mist coming in, / Like somethin' is brewin' and bout to begin. / Can't put me finger on what lies in store, / But I fear what's to happen all happened before." or will this year be different? My gut is saying this year is going to be different, but let's see. Going to be lots of fun watching and speculating. -

Execution in Finals was better for Glenn, also the Judges do rotate from Prelim's to finals so Different Judges on Music and Visual. The scoring breakout %'s are as follows for this contest and over a 10% jump in both Music and Visual for Glenn in Finals vs. Prelim's. Music = 30% Visual = 30% GE = 20% Percussion = 10% Auxiliary = 10%- 93 replies
