People make all sorts of choices. I think Marcus made the same decision except for a feature. I also think Reagan has some other sort of drum monted on the snare drums -
2022 BOA San Antonio (Nov. 4 & 5)

I agree with this in principle, but I would say that San Antonio has always set the pace for BOA. It WAS the first Super Regional after-all. Why NOT the first SUPER-Super Regional? -

I think this year's Super Regional may be the best ever in terms of depth... actually, I would say it's almost certainly the case that the 10-30 bands are the best there's ever been at a contest. At the top however I think the finals in 2017 and 2019 were stronger than they will be tonight, though I may eat those words at the end of this incredible day!! -

Anyone else struggling with the livestream before the contest beings? That worries me for the two days... -

2022 BOA Katy (Oct. 1)

Just watched the CTJ Video. Got to say, I’m not a fan. They play well and the drill is cleaning up but the ET bike at the beginning is weird to me. A little too on the nose and “standard HS Band” for a program like CTJ imho. I like the arrangement of the opener but the ballad isn’t for me. I’m hit or miss with vocalists, but that’s a lot. Will be interesting to see how BOA Katy play. If Reagan doesn’t clean up, I think the door could be open for Cedar Ridge or Seven Lakes or someone like that to take a run at the top spot. -
Anyone know the source music for Ayalas show is?

I would take 2017 SA finals if only because there were 14 groups

2019 BOA San Antonio
Fwguard17 replied to CTJBandPops's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
This is false. Bands that attend Gnats have the choice of whether or not to be considered and a separate committee (not related to the judging of the contest) watches those bands in semifinals and chooses the rose parade participant. The competitive outcome has no bearing, but it’s unsurprising that “good” shows competitively have the same effect on the committee -

BOA Houston 2019

I am welcome to my opinion and can take things however I want without a lesson from you, thank you very much. If you’ve listened to visual tapes from judges, you would understand that effect comes FROM performance, and that good design done at 8/10 is as good as bad design done 10/10. If you don’t like that then we can agree to disagree And for the record, I am an aspiring music educator with no connection to any school that is mentioned in these forums so I take nothing personally nor have a dog in the race but to defend my own opinions -

Have people forgetting that Reagan WON the Visual caption in 2015, and 2018 at San Antonio AND was second to only Avon in 2017? Pretty sure they know what they’re doing and have pretty much crept back. Js -

I also was at the NEISD Fall Festival last night - some quick takeaways CTJ-LOVE this show! So much fun, great energy, and a ton of visual demand! I can’t wait to see if at Nationals. Reagan-Wow. Just wow. I was worried about what has become one of my favorite programs over the last few years after seeing their videos from a football game the last few weeks. Seeing it live is a totally different ballgame. Not as big of a sound as CTJ but so powerful. The show grabs you and seems to never let you go. They go big like only they can (and they keep it interesting without props, AGAIN), but also have this character relationship with a guard leader and a band member that is super engaging and I totally missed on the video. They are going to compete for the top spot at SA again this year. MacArthur-SO Fun! I want to take a second and echo the person above who said they were great. They have this solo Trumpet player that was AMAZING and stole the whole night for me. Incredible! Lots of good stuff from other programs but I have hijacked the thread long enough ☺️ -
2018 BOA San Antonio?
Fwguard17 replied to MadisonBandMan1's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
This is my concern. We know that contest dynamics come into play and can inflate scores when there are many good groups (2017 SA), so does panel 2 have an advantage because IMHO they are a bit deeper? Could those scores go up across the board and skew the caption and placement award in prelims when comparing panel to panel? Both St. Louis and Atlanta had one weird caption award in prelims that was remidied in finals but we all know San Antonio is another monster altogether compared to St Louis and Atlanta
