2017 Grand Nationals
Mash replied to northtexasbandfan's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Well it wouldn't surprise me Vandegrift has band boosters with pretty deep pockets. -
Prayers for the family

Well, they played their heart out. They left everything on the field, the seniors like my daughter, played in three state finals. No shame in any of that. I am proud of them, they poured everything into the show. I see great things coming from them in the future. They major change of band directors this year, the new team will have their own show next year. They worked as hard as any band and should hold their heads high. Best of luck to the finalists tomorrow, all these kids impress me.

Easy everyone. Lets keep it civil

I thought vista did great this afternoon. Duncanville show was really fun to watch too.

2016 6A State Predictions
Mash replied to snares's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
It will be crazy for sure. I know that for Vista Ridge our kids got on a bus early friday 2 hours to San Antonio, then back to Austin for a football game. Then back again Saturday to San Antonio. Then back down again tomorrow through Wednesday, then back to Austin and then back to San Antonio for a playoff football game on Thursday. And of course the lone star competion this weekend. Leander had it better this last weekend with prelims on Saturday so only one day but then they have to fly right out of UIL for grand nats. Did Flower Mound just stay down in San Antonio for BOA through UIL? I know it is a long way. I don't know how the kids do it. I am hoping to watch some great shows tomorrow. -
Favorite shows so far this year

I haven't seen bands outside of Area H or D in person yet, tomorrow I will. So I am not listing them. My faves(not including Vista) Leander (great concept and execution end to end) Westlake (not as strong as Leander but very enjoyable to watch) The front ensemble girl (gong/big drum) from Del Rio (I just loved her spunk! She stole the show for me and made me smile) Cedar Park (fun and great execution) Vandegrift (great brass section) -

I think it will depend on the judging in some cases. Vista seems to either be loved for their music or hated. -
Pretty bummed Vista didn't make finals. Their music is pretty darn good.
-
yep, Vista and Leander barely made 6A this year. David vs. Goliaths
-
This is a transition year for them. They have great feeder schools and a new director. Next year will be a big year for them.
-
Good luck to all the bands today! I'm pulling for Vista Ridge but I want all of them to perform their best.

6A State Bands Video Megathread
Mash replied to littlejaw's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Vista along with Leander have to be the smallest 6A schools in the state and we amazing with our small but peppy bands :-) I think both schools are over the minimum by like 50 kids. I love that our districts ex-5A bands are representing so well in 6A. Heck my kid got to go to state 3 out of 4 years, not many kids get a chance to do that (Vista and Vandegrift as Leander missed state by one place 4 years ago if I remember correctly) -

If anything I said was taken as a negative, I personally apologize to those that felt slighted. My family sits through and gives cheerful applause for every band that we have seen at local, region, area, and state competitions. All of these kids impress the crap out of me. I grew up in a school district in California that didn't have working instruments or quality instruction for the kids in school so the amount of investment into fine arts for our kids is amazing and one of the reasons I moved to Texas. They all work really hard, I know my daughter is in color guard this year and comes home daily with blisters from working so hard. All these kids work super hard. One of my favorite moments was sitting next to a very nice lady at Area this last week when we talked and she said the trumpet soloist is her grandson. He played his heart out, sounded great, and grandma was in tears. It is moments like that we all do this. To me his solo was just as heartwarming as the boy in our band that is 1st chair in the state. -
I can't confirm it, but I would love to see UIL have a specific dollar figure the school could spend on the show. I would love to see what schools with less financial support could do. Leave BOA the big over the top show piece. It doesn't affect our school, but it is pretty obvious about the amount of money some schools get when you see the props.

I agree and think that Leander was better. Vandergrift as always has a very loud clean brass section, but the solos are not top notch IMHO. I also love the use of the cheap props that Leander has and expect them to do great at BOA. -
It was still way better than Leander which didn't get to be judged. They were clearly the most screwed by the rains last year. Vista also had a super long day (got to school very early then sat and waited and waited) I chalk up last years experience to be a complete trainwreck for all the bands. If I remember right, Leander got on buses and had to turn around in the morning.

WOW that is more than 100 more than our school has. -
Yeah, that is what Vista had to do for Area. I'm assuming the first block bands will stay in a hotel on Monday night. We had to leave school at 4:45am after senior night at football to make our prelim slot. That was a super long day for the kids. Thankfully we got a 12:45 time slot this time. Some how Vandegrift always gets great time draws, I know it is random, but man year in and year out they seem to be lucky.

How many band members does Flower Mound have on the field? They look huge. -
I have to disagree on seeing them marching at 7th,
-
Scratching my head about Vista getting 9th in marching in the finals by one judge. I watched all of them and no way I would put them at 9th in marching.
-
I got this from our band director which is the same band that you follow I think. As far as I understand the order is a random draw by the band directors. It would be nice if it was 2 hours later for sure. It is Senior night the night before so the game will be long and then hit the buses at 5am.... ugh. Thankfully they are teenagers and can sleep anywhere.

2016 UIL Region Contests
Mash replied to Xenon's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I am not trying to be rude, In my limited years as a band parent, I have only seen bands get 1's at Region. What is the difference between a band getting a 1 and a band getting a 2? -
Yep, Leander for example heads from state directly to the airport for GN.
