  1. Yes... certainly well deserved. And close... considering they placed second in Area prelims and finals just a week ago.
  2. I had to go to meetings this afternoon, did I miss anything good? Speaking as a former vista parent (3 kids) I'm happy to see them doing so well. And I thank everyone for heaping praise on them. They pulled big upset in 2018; and though I thought they deserved it, FloMo did as well. I think Vista had a real crowd-pleaser and judge-pleaser show that overcame any minor technical problems. One judge admitted to crying, I heard. This year, it just seems so much more competitive with 5-6 bands that would've easily won in 2018 (or other years). I wish there were a way to have a six way tie. But this year, I think its Hebron's world and we're all living in it. 1. Hebron 2. TWHS 3. Vandegrift 4. Vista Ridge 5. Reagan 6. Cedar Ridge 7. Flower Mound
  3. Yeah, Vista was 9th in prelims (92.5), 11th in semi (91.225), then 12th in finals (89.9). I thought their best run was finals, but had the lowest score. Also interesting is BA had 97.5 in prelims - so the gap between BA-Vista grew from 5.0 points to 8.3 points. They played back to back in prelims and semis. My guess is when judging a smaller group the scores might spread out a bit as there is a bit more room to maneuver.
  4. Mason - turn and burn! You can be my wingman any day. Great balls of fire.
  5. Vista’s show this year certainly did have balls. And blue ones at that. Joking aside, I that seemed like their best run in weeks. I hope to keep seeing them.
  6. I would guess a little lower since many bands lost a competitive year with all the sophomores that are really freshman in terms of experience. I thought the San Antonio scores were biased lower, but of course that can could be unrelated to my point.
  7. To understand why both UIL and BOA scoring - indeed any subjective scoring systems - are imperfect (maybe to different degrees), you have to consider variability and unconscious bias. Read the book "Noise," by Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman, for example. One you accept this, it makes the competitions more enjoyable because your expectations are more calibrated.
  8. And some of the Area competitions as well. It goes to show the comments of one earlier poster are true - probably beyond the medalists, the placements are a little less accurate. If I were a judge (ha), I would definitely fuss a lot more about whom gets what medal than who is 10 vs 11. Definitely Vista looked a lot more competitive two weeks ago with a victory at Area. But I'm not complaining - they got to enjoy a Cinderella story victory in 2018.
  9. Yep - this is why I am trying to coin the phrase "undisputed" national champion. Because obviously whomever wins nationals will not have beaten Hebron. To be the best, you have to beat the best.
  10. 1. Hebronism, 2. Voldemort, 3. Flower, 4. Reagan/Bush'84, 5. Lady Bird Johnson, 6. Coppell, 7-8 the Oak Ridge brothers, Vista then Cedar, 9. Marcus, 10. Westlake, 11. Keller vs Keller, 12. Carroll
  11. DFW has 3x the population of Austin metro, but who's counting 😃
  12. Considering Pearland was in finals at BOA, they would seem to have a good chance as well.
  13. So much for Dr. Seuss being cancelled! I love Texas.
  14. There will be a line forming before the gates open. Being on a Tuesday and a smaller competition, I found it is not as insanely crowded like Super Regionals are.
