2018 BOA San Antonio?
bandgeek900 replied to MadisonBandMan1's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
If you're looking to see where Brandeis places, I can assure you that Brandeis should be in the top 50 -
Not to attack, but didn't you make a claim before the results?
-
Also what happened with Langham?

I'm not trying to sound rude or anything, I'm just genuinely curious - where did Jersey Village and Katy come from? Katy making state was understandable given their prelims scores. But Jersey Village going from 10th to 2nd is absolutely incredible. How does that even happen?? I've never seen anything like that.

Seems like it was accurate that Fair got 9th in prelims which I'm in shock..

Another very strong year for Cy Fair. James E. Taylor, Pearland, Seven Lakes, Clear Brook also had great years. Brazoswood's super regional placement was surprising, thought they would place higher. Cypress Falls went to BOA St. Louis this year, a regional I thought they would definitely final in, but they ended up placing 16th in prelims. Any idea as to why Cy Falls consistently attends out of state super regionals?

Everyone keeps talking about the big named bands and their shows. but sometimes bands that arent as well known as the Hebron's and Flower Mound's put out just as intriguing shows, and I think we could all appreciate that Cy Fair "Deja Vu"- Interesting concepts. The muted trumpets would echo one another. One side of the field would move and perform and then the other side would follow a couple of beats later and perform the exact same thing. Their ballad was gave the audience a constant "Deja Vu" type of feel with circles constantly collapsing and reforming. Seven Lakes "The Art of Music" - Each movement had its own personality. The title sounds cheesy, but when you see the show in person, you see that their show is literally the Art of Music. They had their own painters, and even the colorguard would each have their own canvas! Love their twist in Beethoven's Fifth. Sneakily clever show design. Clements "Adrenaline Rush"- Super exciting. This show demanded a lot out of its performers. From start to finish, there were no breaks. They had this projection near the front ensemble depicting flashes of videos of surfing or some fast paced activity, adding to the buildup. One of the harder Clements shows in recent years, but also one of their better ones. Dawson "Tempting Fate" - You have to give props to any band that marches to Vesuvius by Frank Ticheli. That piece is a nightmare to march with all the time signature changes. Anyhow, the ballad was one of my favorite where you can clearly hear melodies from The Sound of Silence. They have this hit before their impact moment in the end of the ballad where the entire band squatted down, and it was one of my favorite moments in their show.

Both were in the bottom half. I do not think they were too far down though. Should be able to at least break top 6. I'm very shocked CTJ wasn't in the top half. Found two area finals performance videos. Really enjoyed Seven Lakes' show. It's honestly such a shame they did not make it. I'm sure they would have fared well at state. Cy Fair's show was great. Really fast paced. Well deserving of a state spot. Seven Lakes: Cy Fair: -

If Clements and Dulles made 1s, which I'm sure they did, that puts the total at 37 bands. Add Ridge Point and that is 38. -

The more the better. A lot of state worthy bands in this area. In general, I feel like the CFISD/KISD schools like Cy Fair, Seven Lakes, James E. Taylor, and Cy Falls bands have all grown tremendously in these past two years compared to 2 years ago. They are my top favorites to go to state. -

wish I could hear some non-bias opinions about schools instead of current marchers/alumni/parents giving their thoughts about their bands. Excited to see how this all turns out though! -

Didn't get to see them yesterday, but they did get 5th at the Lone Star Preview. They must be cleaning pretty well. I saw their show on the 13th and it is still visually below a lot of bands in this area, but musically they are tearing it up (in a good way!). Given some time and it should be very good. They march a difficult show. -

Hard to tell how Clements is doing. Last I saw their show on October 7, it was still pretty dirty visually. That drill is insanely difficult to clean. Musically, they are up there. Clear Brook has a legitimate chance. That drumline is insanely talented. -

Everyone seems to agree that the top five bands will be Reagan, CTJ, TWHS, Hendrickson, and Winston Churchill. In your opinion, which five bands will fill in the latter part of finals? -

Underdog Bands This Year?
bandgeek900 replied to jevvell's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I would say Vandegrift until after BOA Austin. They really came out gunning for the gold. Everyone was looking at Leander and CTJ and BAM! Vandy comes out of no where. Exciting next couple of weeks coming up ahead. -

BOA Conroe 2016
bandgeek900 replied to thebashful15's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Here is what I think from the 6A bands coming from the Houston Area. In CFISD, Cy Creek, Cy Falls, Langham Creek, and Cy Fair. I pit Cypress Creek for having to perform that early. That is insane. But this is a program that has really grown over the past couple of years. This will be one of their biggest events in a while, so it will be interesting to see how they get their feet wet. Langham Creek is coming off a spectacular year where they advanced to the finals of 6A Honor Band. Their program always seems to have a very mature sound, though I am not sure how it translates to BOA. Cy Falls went from barely advancing last year to a 5th place finals performance at conroe, followed by another finalist performance at BOA Atlanta. This program is always a contender to make finals at conroe and this year is no different. Cy Fair, I believe, has the ability to make finals this year. They have new uniforms, which look brilliant, but they also have a more refined purpose. They went from placing in the middle-bottom pack last year at Conroe to making 17th at BOA San Antonio, only 3 spots from finals. This program is slowly becoming the standard in the Houston area. In Katy ISD, Taylor, Tompkins, Cinco Ranch, Morton Ranch, Katy, and Seven Lakes. Taylor is coming off a year where they won best music and best percussion over some very high caliber programs. They placed 13th in this competition last year. So I think finals is a very good possibility for them with their great drumline and musicianship. Tompkins is coming off a year where they placed 13th at the UIL State Marching Contest. They have really been coming along the past couple of years. They, too, won best color guard over some very high caliber programs as well. They are on the bubble to make finals as well. Morton Ranch and Seven Lakes are always contenders with Cinco and Katy right behind them. Seven Lakes will be dealing with a director change, so that will be interesting to see. Morton Ranch always seems to surprise at events like these. Katy competed in their first super regional last year and placed pretty well in comparison to MRHS and SLHS. Cinco has never really stepped into the BOA world, so it will be interesting what type of impression they will make. And in Fort Bend ISD, Clements HS. I wish SFA would be here too. Although one of the smaller 6A bands, SFA is a definitely a force to be reckoned with. However, they had a director change, so maybe things will be changing for the better? Their Clements counterpart is here though. Clements is always one of the premier marching groups in Houston. They finaled at BOA Atlanta, and their guard is always spectacular. I love their show concepts, especially this year. I think having been to BOA Atlanta finals has matured their band a lot. This year is going to be another great year.
