  1. This is not how judging works. What you are talking about it the tick system where mistakes recieve a deduction from a perfect score. What we have is a build up system, where scores start at 0 and the groups are rewarded for what they do. This means that someone could make a mistake but the group could still get a perfect subcaption score. The main thing is the first group sets a standard that the judge (who is trained) says is worth a certain amount of points and then everyone is evaluated relative to them and others. Perfect subcaption scores are nearly impossible unless the last group of the day is the best group, because judges tend to leave room for higher scores. I guess if you want to know why a specific group is ranked somewhere some of us could help understand that.
  2. First time seeing, Hendrickson. Their backdrops are the Crossmen winds floor from 2017, cool stuff.
  3. Edinburg North has a really fun/awesome opening
  4. I think the two groups that come to mind when I think of member by member visual execution is Keller and Marcus. These are the best groups between sets, from a “if I were still running around the field and visual teching” perspective. (Also from a DFW/Austin bands perspective, because those are all the bands I know best) I think Keller has been improving in show design to pump the GE scores. If Marcus hits that sparkle that they’ve always had then they will be top half. This should be a really fun super regional, so many great bands to see.
  5. Might want to back off a little bit, you’re not shining a positive light toward your kids marching band.
  6. I might have accidentally started some of the Marcus doubt. At HEB I said that I liked Marcus but it didn’t seem to have the usual sparkle. But I also told people to stop over reacting and to put Marcus at BOA/State 1 place above or below Keller.
  7. Sorry this is area B talk. But it’s not your fault Danpod. I really would have preferred they called waxahachie the champion in the stadium. Or just left the issue as was with Keller as the winner. What we don’t want is sour grapes in anyone’s mouth, whether Keller students feel first place was taken away from them or Waxahachie students didn’t recieve the recognition they deserve regardless of a rogue judge. We want to to reward these schools and send them off to state to represent the area in the best light. But the UIL has far too many flaws as is.
  8. What’s up with the schedule online? Is there a super block to finish prelims that is 5.5 hours long?
  9. Someone clearly doesn’t need to judge ever again. Whether they are holding a grudge or don’t know how to correctly evaluate a marching band. Not saying he needed to give Keller first. But objectively Keller was at least top 4 worthy from every judge.
  10. I mean he doesn’t do a very good job of explaining the situation. He glosses over the reason why Keller’s score was bigger than Waxahachie’s. No mention of why the announcement was made at the time for Keller winning. When they now say the rule never existed and they should have announced Waxa as the champion at the contest. It’s more of a gloss over of the situation than going in on it. This also proves the problem of bad judges that UIL has been riddled with for years. Last state cycle the Woodlands almost didn’t make state because of poor judging. And we all have numerous examples of bands missing finals or state because of poor judging. The UIL system needs an overhaul in some capacity, whether it is judging standards, reworking of the sheets, better caption assignments, changing the way groups are scored, etc. The system shouldn’t leave as much doubt as it does.
  11. Anyone have the knowledge from the inside to know if J3 that gave Keller a 10 in music was the same J5 that gave them 11th in marching in prelims?
  12. I might be wrong, but Keller’s area streak isn’t 7? Starting with the move to Area A in 06 Keller won each contest in West Texas and 2014 with the split Area. And now they’ve won the last two Area B contests. But I could be wrong if you know otherwise.
  13. Funny you should mention that, Keller is getting an Andy’s just south of their stadium. It looks really close to opening.
  14. Everyone is sleeping on Andy’s! Just because they only do custard and not other food doesn’t mean they can’t win. Sure we all know UIL values a wide range of options, but I think Andy’s can finally steal a state spot and upset a perineal state participant. In other band news, go marching bands.
  15. Whataburger >>> Perennially on top, so of course they stay up there.
  16. Within reasonable walking distance there is: Rosa’s Whataburger Taco Bueno IHOP Panda Express Cici’s Steak and Shake Andy’s And quite a few sit down restaurants in the area just south of the complex.
  17. You are probably correct, UIL rewards cleanliness. BOA is where CTJ will get their due for difficulty and execution being factored in. A little under impressed by the solosists throughout the show so I don’t think think they have the ability to steal the music caption again either.
  18. It’s more of a joke these days to say “don’t @ me”.
  19. They look a lot better than early season, but I’m not sure it’s enough to qualify for state. Though it was hard to tell a lot about the music with it being muffled and talked over some.
  20. Keller does better at UIL than BOA, we’ve seen that year over year. I can’t make any good predictions because I’ve been to three competitions in various weather states and not been able to see most of the bands in this area. But I think Keller is good. Prosper can be very good if the 4 minutes of performance I saw at HEB continues throughout the rest of their show. L.D. Bell is good, just some pacing and design things to work out. I’ve yet to see Timber, Coppell, Richland, Duncanville, Martin, etc. I think this Area will only take 5 bands. And I will hopefully be at the Area competition to enjoy all of the great bands.
  21. Well Keller only made finals in 08-10 then missed for a few years and have been back in finals since their grand bats run in 15. Do you see the name L.D. Bell as a finals lock? Well they used to be the favorite for people to choose to win. How many people have Churchill in finals? They were always supposed to be in finals. Vista Ridge is technically, from a year over perspective, on the outside looking in, but they look to probably be in finals this year. Hendrickson is becoming a great program that had to break into finals a couple years ago. And you get years where there is a Haltom, Richland, Spring, Plano East, Cedar Ridge, Westlake, Coppell, etc. can make finals. The best bands are consistent. If you want me to put my judge hat on I will rank all the bands visually and let you know where the judges screwed over a “new band.” Rarely do we look at the announced finals bands and complain that some band should have deserved the spot over another. As others have mentioned, the intentional spreading out of past finals bands throughout the competition will actually help these “new bands” receive the score they deserve. There have been times were almost 2 blocks didn’t have a finalist. And at that point your asking bands to surpass a standard set an hour or 2 before and it could change how shows were perceived. This way everyone performs around someone that is probably finals worthy, and if you are better then them it will be much easier for you to get rewarded. Because that is what this is all about, rewarding and acknowledging excellence on all levels.
  22. They’ve done it the right way by far, no need to complain about it.
  23. I think some people misread the doom and gloom on Marcus. I suggest wherever you are going to rank Keller, put Marcus +/-1 from there. In my opinion, both comfortable locks for finals.
  24. It’s always disappointing when one judge changes a competition. And it’s a major disappointment that without finals we don’t get to give the judge a second chance to evaluate the groups. I wonder what the MPE judge (yes I know his name but won’t directly call him out) was thinking when his 3rd place ensemble didn’t make finals. As a judge if someone is in my top 3 I’m probably very excited to get a second read of what I deemed a medalist at the regional. Edit: on second read, this sounds a little salty. I just want to clarify that I wish the kids had another opportunity to perform and receive the appreciation they earned from the crowd and judges. In finals we don’t know if Hebron catches Flower Mound, a bottom 5 finalist breaks into the top half, etc. But with that said Congratulations to all the performers!
