  1. Really? Good for them! I thought he was retiring.
  2. Thanks for that...there’s been a lot of “what’s wrong with Marcus?” on the forums this year and my back is up a bit. The kids see this stuff and people forget they’re all in high school, not DCI. Do I think Marcus is a state gold medal contender? Probably not this year, but these kids are still really darn good. Show design—we can argue that, but the effort and talent is still there. Now, we do have a LOT of freshmen this year, so watch out for us in 2020.
  3. Should Hebron have been 1st across the board for music? Yes. That one judge just probably allowed “I liked that” to come into play (I’m a Marcus parent, in full disclosure, and have seen Hebron’s show more than once). That’s the judge’s prerogative. But, to quote Dan: “Marcus, remember them? They’re still good.” I think Marcus is getting picked apart this year since DW moved up to the district. This is still her show, though, and I’m super excited to see what Jones and crew come up with next year. And their music is harder than it sounds—the ballad alone has 4 time signature changes, for example (5/4 anyone? While marching? Cringe). Maybe the technical aspect is what that judge got excited about. Honestly, any band who plays The Firebird well gets a 1 in my book (looking at you, Hebron), but that’s personal preference, as that piece is in my top 5 favorites. Finally (and I’ll shut up after this) Marcus’s improvement from last week to this week was pretty dramatic—funny what some sunny days can do. So I do think they have room to grow before next Monday. I think every band does—even FloMo who is just about clean. This is the time to fine tune. (And props for using “mould” in a sentence.
  4. Absolutely. The strides the LHS program has made the last few years have been very exciting. And their new uniforms are sharp!
  5. Dan’s podcast goes into that today. It’s a good listen.
  6. That seemed true across the state. Keller’s 10? Wha’....? Granted, I wasn’t there to see them, but that was a case of “one of these things is not like the other” and made me squint.
  7. Based on scores at both at prelims and finals, Marcus was clearly in 3rd place (both in “place” score and numeric score). They even tied Hebron for first in music at Finals. Their prelims run was stronger than finals, but they performed at 9:30 am then again 8:15 pm, so energy level was off a bit. Short story: their music is hard, and they play it well. Hebron’s 2nd place may’ve been a fluke, I think. They got a single 4 mixed in from one judge. If they had a 2 instead, they could’ve won it. Especially if you throw out the high and low (they would’ve tied for 1st). Either way, FloMo and Hebron could trade spots on any given day.
  8. Marcus stopped just north of it but another warning was called in our area, so we sheltered at the Red Oak Wal-Mart. Kids are safe and we are headed north now.
  9. We went into the Red Oak Wal-Mart for an hour to shelter. We’re headed back to Dallas now. It’s been a wild Saturday! The kids have been really patient. I wish we could’ve marched but we had fun at ##BOAWalmart.
  10. Marcus has pulled off the highway due to a tornado warning due south on our route. Yikes.
  11. Marcus band is in route to Waco. The weather in Dallas is terrible. Good thoughts that we make it safely and BOA is still going when we get there. (I’m a band mom/chaperone, BTW).
  12. Marcus seems to have brought the rain to nearly every event so far.
  13. Marcus is really looking forward to Waco—it’s our first time there! Here’s hoping the rain stays away!!
  14. Well, I’m not sure why we were on the list in this forum because I remember thinking it wasn’t correct a few months ago. And Mr Jones is in full control of the program—I know you didn’t mean to imply that. But coming in during the summer means theme, choreo, schedule, and music is already decided. He’s very respectful of traditions but we’re also willing to help him make it his band.
  15. “They” was Drinkwater last spring. I’m a parent, and was there, in April, when she announced it. The kids are excited to go to a BOA they’ve never been to before and see bands they don’t regularly see. It has nothing to do with Jones.
  16. Marcus’s show is Renaissance- renewal/rebirth. Fitting, right? And they had a reason to go to BOA Waco this year. They just really wanted to go to Mesquite’s contest this week and it conflicted with BOA DFW.
  17. Scores are up: https://t.co/OSBQ6AEjUY Prosper and Keller tied for music, which Marcus held at a prett good margin. GE and Visual won it for Keller. Because people raised an eyebrow, Marcus raced the rain to put 2/3+ of their show on the field in September and will likely put part 4 up fast. By San Antonio, this show will be updated and shined within an inch of its life, but Marcus hasn’t learned a show that fast before. To echo other posters, these (high school) kids have experienced a tremendous amount of change in the last 8 months. They are also a young band. They lost a sizable senior class and gained 90+ freshmen. This isn’t to tarnish Keller’s achievement—they are an excellent program. So is Prosper. So are all the other programs, including Lewisville, who is blooming before our eyes. My point is every kid in every band works so hard, maybe even the (frequently picked apart) Marcus Band needs some kindness and grace this year.
  18. She did have a lot of it ready. Still, Howard left as well, so all 3 directors will have 1 year or less at Marcus and might change a few things up. It'll be interesting, but a lot of kids and techs are returning, so who knows?
  19. It's a very sad day for the students there. Then again, it's also an opportunity. And DW is going to be an exceptional fine arts director.
  20. I think Flower Nound played it too safe. Last year’s show was stronger thematically and visually. Stand that up against 3 bands who live and breathe GE (Avon, Carmel, and BA—I mean, the purple wigs and pedal cars?) and a Marcus show that took huge visual risks for band who’s normally UIL textbook, and that it explains it. People discounted Marcus a lot this year, I think, because the show wasn’t so clean in Southlake. They just peaked at exactly the right moment in the Nats final and pulled ahead. And the three medalists are simply BOA royalty.
  21. Marcus has steadily improved since BoA Southlake and their music is pretty dang hard. I’m sure it was close with Hebron, but Marcus peaks late every year.
  22. Marcus is one of those bands that comes together at the last minute, so that early regional didn't do them any favors. And DW always has something extra up her sleeve. I wouldn't count them out of the top 6 yet. Now, I will go out on an unpopular limb and say, I think it's Hebron's year. They're due. Then again, who knows? San Antonio is looking to be more competitive than Nationals this year.
