2015 Hendrickson's "Lost". The music and choreography were amazing. The story of being Lost then finding home. The chaos of the storm, the Band on lock down, (me sitting on the 130 toll in a tornado watching a tractor trailer rig flip over on the North bound lane), BOA not budging on awarding a new time slot and the ISD not allowing the band to meet the existing time slot causing a disqualification. Performing in the exhibition in San Antonio then loading up and driving to the US Bands competition at Kelly Reeves and winning. I guess you could say I was moved in many ways.

Way to go Henny! -
Good lord! Exhausting.

Once inside the experience was defined by: Disco Music Disco Dancing Fashion Drugs Sex Absolute Decadence How many of these things also define the Hendrickson show? Extremely limited access? Not really, it's not demonstrated on the field in a memorable way that defines the show. Disco Music? Yes, the melodies are there but the relentlessly driving groove of a dance club is never the strength of any marching band. It's a problematic design choice. Disco Dancing? Not at a level that defines the show. Fashion? Sort of, but not really. The Guard fashion looks like 1967 to 1972. Studio 54 opened ten years later, in 1977, and fashion had changed considerably. It would probably be helpful if they looked less like flamboyant extras from The Mod Squad and more like the cast of Saturday Night Fever or even The Village People. Drugs? Definitely not. Sex? No, not even a little. Decadence? It's in the name of the show but that's as far as it goes and for a high school marching band, that is as it should be Henny made finals at SA in 16', 17'& 18'. 3 years, not 2 and was lumped with the few bands that were screwed over by BOA in 15'. As a 1980 high school graduate, the fashion is correct. We went from bell bottoms or short shorts, tight knit shirts and platform shoes (not on the marching field, thank god!) To puffy sleeves and parachute pants almost over night in the early eighties. The short life of Studio 54 influenced both fashion and Music of that time. The title is "Music" of a Decadent People. Not the Decadence of the people. I'm not sure if I agree totally with everything you have said, but I do think it's time for Henny to find another show designer. I don't feel the current designer is as invested in the program as before. A lot of members graduated in 2019 and I consider Henny to be a fairly young band this year and with the new director change, I'm sure is influencing the show somewhat. But to see the judges placements; I'm not totally convinced that it is the program, the show or the bands performance that reflects the results.

Because Waco.

After reready my last few posts/replies, they seem to come off like I am upset with the results because Henny is out. To be clear, I don't have a horse in this race anymore. I've just become hooked on marching arts and just feel there are other reasons for the outcomes of some of these contest. BTW, I'm sitting on the 40 yard line enjoying finals with my Henny alumni daughter and friend.

Go read some of my previous posts in the forums. I've discused that same point about UIL adjudicators.
-
Henny was assigned a new director at the end of 2018 instead of giving the job to Phelan who took over after Adkinson was released. Bad decisions cost them at Austin, not having the "loudest" band cost them today.
-
According to the notes the directors recieved, apparently the "Judges" didn't understand the show concept. Even though the pre-show tells everyone what the show is. Go figure.
-
I was sitting with the band director that was left behind in case they made finals.
-
Henny did not drop out and I didn't have Bowie in the top 5. Keller didn't have a full show wasn't clean.

So the weather looks like it's going to cooperate and this regional will actually happen. I know this is a college stadium and Baylor at that, but does anyone know if BOA made arrangements for concessions? We don't want another contest like Dallas.

I can't wrap my head around just 2 charters to Indy. When we marched in Macy's we took 7 charters Jet Blue/Delta and there were only 3 seats available for non band members. Our trucks went up a week in advance. Freshman year...$3K over and above annual fees and that's after a record setting fund raising drive. -

.8 only? Or is it .8 per time. Like .8 per second? Ok. Verified with BOA rule book. Under/ over time penalty is: .1 point for every 3 seconds. -

She was the Section Mom last year of a fairly young section, so most of the section this year are her babies. Should be fun! -

On the field prior to and immediately after. We would hustle the pit and major's podiums and maybe a few props then beat feet to the sideline wall out of the way and out of view during the performance. At a director's signal, it would be a mad dash to get everything off the field in the time alloted. -

2019 BOA San Antonio

The judges need to grow a pair. The programs bust their tails all season and always bring their best. MFA makes $$$$ off of these contests that compensate the judges for sitting in the AC sipping cold beverages and chowing down while the bands wait in crowded busses, practice in the heat and sit in the cheap seats. There should be one set of judges for all of qualifying at least. If they took this as serious as every member of every program that takes the field and perform the jobs they're paid to do, then we probably wouldn't be discussing this. -
Wasn't a band geek until my oldest daughter converted me 7/8 years ago. Luv her for that by the way. I was one of the guys who always crashed the band parties "to make new friends"...yes all my girlfriends were in band. Played baseball, football, soccer and was one of the original "Scaters" back in the 70's. I had a 8 ft tall trick ramp set up out on our street that brought all the kids in the neighborhood out to test their board skills. I guess that daredevil type atmosphere affected me some. In high school when I wasn't playing soccer or behind a camera, I was getting thrown off bulls and broncs and when that wasn't enough I got behind the wheel and took to the track. Now days when work allows, I'm into photography (my passion since I was very young), video production & editing, 3d CGI & solid modeling. Which is what I do for a living, so I guess work is...fun? I don't really follow traditional pro sports much anymore. They've all become too political and money driven. I'd just as soon take in a youth league, or high school sporting event. If I had to say I follow a pro sport, it would be baseball leaning toward the Rangers then the Astros, then who ever the underdog is in any particular game.

Put both my daughters through select soccer and coached both. So, yeah, I guess I'm kinda into the Women's World Cup. Women's fussball (yes I keep tabs on the German soccer teams) is so much more traditional and pure than the men's soccer nowadays. Like softball too. Girls Rule!
