  1. I guess this region shatters the idea that anyone can get a 1 Rating. To be honest, over the years, this has been the Region that has had more Bands given lower scores than any others I can remember. You do not see many 5's. In todays contests a 3 is a Bad Rating.

  3. Gilmer also has an indoor facility where they can host Bands. Problem is there is no seating for folks and the judges have to stand up above the Band. In Nov 2002 I sat through Rain, sleet and some snow during the State Marching Contest at Baylor University. They had several students get injured during the contest and they did not have finals due to weather(probably the worst I have ever sat through). Duncanville beat L D Bell for the Gold Medal. I agree that they should have indoor facilities probably one in each area. The probably is getting the state to fund this. They also can be used for football. November this year is looking to be cold

  7. This is a bad weekend to get a lot of the top Bands involved. On the 20th, weather permitting, 15 of the Regions are hosting their marching contest for UIL with schools such as those in the Austin, San Antonio, Houston, and Rio Grande along with West Texas and the Panhandle. Almost 700 High School Bands will be involved in UIL Regions. The lineup is heavy with Bands from the Metroplex and no other areas. US Bands just does not get the fact that going up against the UIL schedule of Region contests is not a big winner in Band Selection..

  12. True the stadium was not made to host a BOA type contest, however to be fair to BOA, the place got clobbered by a Tornado and very Heavy Rain in the mid afternoon and there was no way to keep ever one under cover in that stadium. Maybe next year they can rent out McLane Stadium at Baylor University. Just glad no one got hurt.

  15. Being from a Career Law Enforcement/Investigative background(43 years), I can appreciate what she went through to get this job. One of my good friends son just completed the Law Enforcement Course at the US Park Service Academy in CO and is stationed at Yellowstone National Park(Tough job but someone has to do it.). Growing up in CA, I hope she is fortunate to get assigned Up in the Armstrong Redwoods near Eureka. Most beautiful part of a beautiful state that unfortunately has far to many problems for me to want to deal with. I have a nephew just joined the Police Department in Sanger, CA. His father my brother was a career Police Officer in CA. May she have a great career serving in this dual hatted job.

  17. This is an interesting contest with Bands from LA, TX and AR competing. They have done a good job trying to get more recognition for the event and I liked the fact that they had both UIL and ASBOA Judges doing to event on several occasions. Buddy Deese, the former director of Texas High School got this moving and while it is not the biggest event, I think it brings together schools from different states and communities. I think it is more fun to watch than some of our bigger shows. I concurr that judges used to dealing with contests in the Metroplex and San Antonio Area might have been a little harder on the groups. They have some differences such as far fewer kids taking private lessons and smaller staffs at the schools.

  19. I have to wonder when was the last time you attended a Marching Contest of strictly Class 1A-3A Bands in the rural parts of Texas. My guess is that it has been many years. Last Saturday the 6th of Oct the Irion County HS Band from a school of 181 students marched in the Concho Valley Marching Festival and received a 1st Division Rating, Best in Class Award and Drum Major Award. If you read their facebook page you would notice that the Band works with the Cross country team getting members of the Band from their meet to the contest. Coaches drive the Busses to the Band Contest, and most of the Band is involved in other activities. If you look at the Ratings sheet, none of the Bands in Class 1A were rated on Color Guard. The reason is simple they cannot afford or support a Guard program. In recent years the difference between our small schools and large schools has lengthened . Almost all class 1A-3A school Bands share their members with the football, Cross Country, FAA, and Cheerleaders. Band directors cannot demand their members devote 100% of their time to the Band. It cannot happen and would not be supported.A family with children in these schools might have to support their activities in Band, Football(yes Football players march at Half Time in These Schools(how many 6A schools would allow that. Either you are in or out of the Band program) The fact is that most students in small schools in the rural areas are involved in far more activities than students in major metro areas. Parents have to support many school actlivities and Band Directors have to work around scheduling contests due to conflicting events. Most kids in rural areas are also involved in FFA and work with their families. Tomorrow, Troy HS Band is hosting a PRE-UIL Marching contest that works with Class 1A-3A Bands. It is held on a weekday since that is one of the few times the Band Directors have total access to their people. I think you and many other folks who are into the Big Programs ought to attend Rural Marching Contests to see why these schools see things differently. My Region has 47 Class 1A-3A Schools, we have 16 5A and 6A schools.
  20. The Troy High School Band will host it annual Pre-UIL Marching Band Festival on Tuesday Oct 9 starting at 9AM. This event which features UIL Judging and Ratings along with Judges Critiques after each Bands performance is geared to Bands in class 1A to 3A who would like a performance event prior to entering UIL Regional Contests in the next two weeks. This event has been on going for several years and has had a good response from schools who want to get a critique of their performance without entering a
