Texas Marching Classic 2019

They were on today. Back to school for some video work on the new drill but the sound is the best of the season for CP. -
2019 BOA San Antonio

I wonder if these pairings were made to keep a few certain school districts from dominating finals....LISD north and south, NORTH east school district... The contest is going to be a blast anyway you cut it. I am excited. My sister is also flying into town for the weekend to check out her first Texas band contest. -
This is going to be fun to watch. Being in SA to see my son's 5A band will allow us to catch up on the 3A scene.

Cedar Park did not want to put on the part of the show they learned last Thursday. It wouldn't be fair to the kids or to the people in the audience. -

Glenn put on a good show tonight. Well controlled and nicely marched. The show design is great! Watch out 5A Glenn is up and coming quickly!! -

I'm hoping that Cedar Park does their full show. I just watched a run through this evening. The finale is more powerful than the opener. It twice brought a tear to my eyes. -

This is such a great event. It's a lot more relaxed than a competition. The middle school bands make this a lot of fun. Last year they put up the most incredible wall of sound when they put all of the high schools and middle schools on field to play together. -
Best of luck to Montaya clients!! Cool promo. Kudos

2019 BOA Austin

What a show this was. This was one of the most competitive regional competitions I've seen from opening hit to close. I'll run doen the top 5 from my perspective during finals. 1. Vandergrift: They were my pick to win. And boy did they deliver. Wow! Crisp and clean playing, wonderful marching technique, beautiful balance, and a great show. If they continue along this trajectory they will be on the podium in Indy. 2. Leander: The best sounding brass section at the show. A very cool show with a lot going on. But not so much that the audience gets lost in the show. Wonderful performance tonight and I'm excited to see where this show ends up. 3. CTJ. The kids can play and perform. Right now the show isna hot mess as they learn from start to finish, and that's fine. I prefer their show as presented in finals (minus the props) as you get to watch the band (this ultimately hurt them for this conpetition). 4. Vista Ridge: I love that they are using the Mandarins turning stage. Well balanced sound for the entire show. Not my kind of show (and that's okay, it doesn't mean it's not a good show). Lots of work to catch the other 2 LISD 6A bands. 5. Cedar Park: The rumors of CP's demise are greatly exaggerated. Front ensemble, battery, guard really stood out. The woodwinds are beginning to own their parts. Upper brass needs to focus a little more on balance. This band is about control, articulation, and cleanliness. They have just started focusing on learning the huge sound. The arrangement accentuates this. This show has a lot to come in terms of GE. -

The top 5 were as I expected. Bottom 5 is a wild ride! So far it's been a phenomenal show. Let's hang on for the finals ride. LISD PROUD!! -

2019 BOA Austin

Cedar Park laid down one heck of a show tonight. They blew Rouse out of the stadium and I really like Rouse and their show. The CP kids were clicking tonight. Hopefully it translates over to tomorrow. -

2019 5A State
MikeKyu replied to PantherBone's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Different. The guard right now is using a lot of the same visual techniques founded at CP by Sullivan/Wessels but is still under the overall guidance of Wessels, AD Mr. Yee, and the new staff on guard. Some of the technique approaches are changed but for this season still carry the fingerprints of Mr. Sullivan. -

The show looks much more polished at this time than it was last year. I'm really excited to see everyone, especially our Texas Grand Nats bands that will be in attendance. -

Turnover will almost always have an effect on an organization. I do not believe that the turnover was the biggest issue that Cedar Park had last season. Their show was a massive show that had issues with music and visual arrangements and getting them to mesh. Only getting judged once for the entire season before BOA was the most difficult issue they had. They got rained out of every BOA that they went to with the exception of Austin. There was no judge's feedback on the show. This meant they started with the exact same show they finished with. -
I've watched: 1. Vandergrift: Complex and yet elegant show for this early in the season. Musically delicious 2. Leander: The show is very difficult. It should be a late bloomer once the entire show is installed. 3. Cedar Park: State show, so it's short. Several goose bump inducing moments. The opener is unlike most Cedar Park shows. Lots of power in the opener. The woodwinds will need to capture what Cedar Park does best, clean and technical playing, for the show to really take off. 4. Cedar Ridge: Very cool show. The taiko drums and Japanese theme are fantastic and it translates well. Degree of difficulty is slightly below the above bands but the entire show is not installed.

I have introduced my mother (professional singer), my sister (opera singer), my wife, my best friend, and a few others to DCI. The key is to find what they like. They may like theater, live music, symphonic music, dance etc.... Find their love and show them examples of bands killing what they absolutely love. Once they see something that is accessible to them in a show is displayed in a format that they haven't considered they may get hooked. The Bluecoats "Tilt" is an exciting show. Santa Clara Vanguard "Phantom of the Opera" and The Cadets "Between Angels and Demons" are all great staring points as each is a completely different style.
