  1. Ok kinda going back to the point, I think marching band is a sport. It seems to me that there are three main types of sports. First are the team sports that we are most familiar with. Two teams (or individuals) compete against each other for an alotted amount of time or until they hit a certain score, finish a certain course, etc. Who ever has more (or less in the case of golf etc) points at the end of it wins. Most times these are played in leagues etc. Football, basketball, tennis, golf, baseball, hockey...I could go on. Then you have racing sports which are pretty self explanatory. Teams or individuals compete at the same time or one after the other for the fastest time on some kind of course. Horse racing, track, cross country, bob sleding, etc. Another similar type that I'm grouping in here are sports like the field in track and field, where you are still competing individually, but not for the fastest time. Instead its the highest, farthest, etc. The last type of sport is what I'm calling the artistic sport, although not all are artistic by any means. Individuals or teams compete one at a time, usually with some kind of time limit or range, for scores by a panel of judges, usually scoring in one or more categories. At the end those with the highest scores win. Gymnastics, figure skating, diving, dressage, even some x-games events etc fall into this category, as well as MARCHING BAND. So marching band is a sport, but an artistic sport .
  2. Are they really?! Ugh that makes me even more depressed that I blew my area audition...
  3. Ooh Southern Harmony is ridiculous. I played that my freshman year at Leander. Even the bassoon part is crazy so I couldn't even imagine for the clarinets. How are your flutes handling the end of movement 3?
  4. Well you're not gettin it . But you should totally help me save the bassoons ...
  5. They may be able to do it on the road, but they sure didn't do it at home... Giants vs. Patriots in the SUPER BOWL!!! Go Giants!
  6. High Clarinets 12 Bassoons 10 (+) Trumpets 35 Horns 52 Euphonium 11 (-) Mallet Percussion 14 Drums 26 Piano 20 Cello 11
  7. My first love is music composition. It has to be if you're serious about making money in that field. But like borchnork, I have other intrests in completely unrelated fields (see above). But more and more I feel led to stay in music, which is why I'm gonna (probably, never know) double major in MusEd.
  8. It's not, so I'm completely discounting that post. Changing the counts back to what they should be... High Clarinets 13 Bassoons 14 (+) Trumpets 19 (-) Horns 52 Euphonium 12 Trombones 7 Mallet Percussion 14 Drums 25 Auxiliary Percussion 5 Piano 19 Cello 11
  9. I have no idea now. I knew before but I've forgotten and I can't find the page that used to tell you...

  11. Wow I'm really surprised at how many music comp. majors there are. I thought I was one of the only ones who wanted to do that. I'm looking at getting my phd in music comp, but I also wanna double major in something else. I can't decide if it should be music ed or maybe engineering or quantum physics or mathematics or something. My pending auditions are at UNT, SMU, KU and MU. I think...
  12. I don't really miss marching season, but it's not like I hate it or anything. I love the competitions and games, but now I have more time to work on all the concert music I have to learn. Plus the repitoire for bassoon isn't that great during marching season .
  13. Yeah no kidding. I was suprised to see that. I'm SOOOO nervous about this audition. Only 4 more days...
  14. Aww poor flutes... Eh who needs 'em ... High Clarinets 12 Low Clarinets 11 Bassoons 13 (+) Trumpets 11 Horns 17 Euphonium 11 Trombones 14 Mallet Percussion 15 Drums 14 Auxiliary Percussion 9 (-) Piano 28 Violin 10 Viola 5 Cello 9 Bass 10

  17. So I've seen this a bunch of other places and I'm surprised it hasn't popped up here. The object is to eliminate instruments until only one is left. Copy the post from before you and put a plus (+) next to your favorite and a minus (-) next to your least favorite. Also make sure to add or subtract one from the instrument's total. You can post a maximum of once per hour, or else there's really no point. Note: I'm using basic instrument families here, so don't say "hey there's no A clarinet!" or something, but if I do miss something obvious (which I'm prone to do) then add it and start with 10. Flute 9 (-) High Clarinets 10 Low Clarinets 10 Saxes 10 Oboes 10 Bassoons 11 (+) Trumpets 10 Horns 10 Euphoniums 10 Trombones 10 Tubas 10 Mallet Percussion 10 Drums 10 Auxiliary Percussion 10 Piano 10 Violin 10 Viola 10 Cello 10 Bass 10
  18. Wow I went through all of these at school and, well...I'm not gonna say how many applied to me. My nickname already is "the ultimate band nerd," so I see no reason to prove it
  19. I thought Area D was in Waco? Maybe not, or maybe I'm not even in area D...no I think I am. Anyway we have a region orchestra audition in early nov and the very top slots (1-3ish depending on the instrument) make it on to area based on that. They can choose to go to region band or not. For those who don't there's the region band auditions the first fri/sat in dec. Fri is round 1 for big sections like flute, clar, etc, then round 2 is the next day for everyone. They take more to area from region band than orchestra usually... I made 1st at orchestra and advanced to area so you would think that would have taken the pressure off. But instead I freaked out at region band and got 5th ...but thats ok cause area's all that matters. I need to take up some better relaxation techniques. Oh and I definately agree with taking a week off. I didn't and now my music sucks...so I'm kinda doing it now. We'll see what happens I guess...
  20. I'm playing Concerto No. 1 k 191 by Mozart. All the movements, which is gonna be crazy, but at least I don't have to memorize it for state. I'm also in two ensembles: Reflections for 3 woodwinds and Gavotte and Hornpipe for 3-4 bsns.
  21. Leander upset Klein Oak 27-24. We're movin on to the third round...
  22. I would wanna fly! mustard or ketchup? It's #2 University of Kansas and #4 University of Missouri. They play this weekend, and the winner will probably end up in the championship game...
  23. Because you have a sick cruel mind... KU or MU?
  24. Our band is trying to do the Hindemith, but definately not for the Christmas concert. We're doing Sleigh Ride, O Magnum Mysterium and an untitled piece (by me ). But I love the Hindemith. I can't wait to get started on it.
  25. I love RR's drum major uniforms. Capes are amazing and I hope Leander's have capes when we get new one's in a few years. I really like our uniforms, and I also like Reagan's.
