UIL 6A Area B 2024
Toasted Almond replied to BandNerd07's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
As a parent of Timber Creek grads, I feel this and remember how my kids felt to be first-out so many times. We know what that tasted like. Hang in there KC - you're climbing every year and your year will come! -

No finals is a real possibility. My fear is that not all bands are able to even perform for prelims. I went down a rabbit hole looking for any official guidance if this were to happen (lots of crazy theories being tossed around among well-meaning parents who have minimal ACTUAL information) and stumbled on this official release from UIL in Oct 2020 regarding this very same potential scenario. https://www.uiltexas.org/files/music/UIL_Area_Marching_Band_Contest_Updated_Weather_Statement.pdf More potential "unprecedented times" I suppose. -

Well, *most* of Region 30. Keller ISD is on fall break this week, so Keller, Keller-Central, and Timber Creek will have their Region contest on Thursday, 10/17. Still, barring anything absurd, they should all get 1's which will bring us up to 12 so far. Then we have the LOOOOONNNNGGGG wait until next Tuesday for Region 5. -

Highest placement for TC at this contest in school history! Insider info says a lot of changes were made after the judges clinic at HEB, which appear to be clearly reflected in TCs performance and placements just 7 days later at BoA DFW. I agree that this is going to be a great year for them. -

I think just the competition has to conclude before midnight. Announcement of results can be after midnight I think. -

Oh I agree. But being a band parent for a 6A Area B band, we received a tentative schedule today (unlikely it will change after Region 31 goes tomorrow), and Crowley isn't on it.... only 34 bands are listed. #nervous -

With the 99.9% certainty of 35 bands competing, the start time would certainly have to be early. -

2023 BOA DFW (Oct. 7)

Electronics failures and malfunctions are probably one of the most frustrating things in marching band today (we didn't have electronics on the field back in my days of marching band.) If it hasn't happened to your program, it will, and its probably one of the hardest things to watch as a spectator - all those kids, getting more anxious and nervous by the second as their performance time ticks away, the fear of going over and being penalized, all while expected to perform at their best! Watching Hebron last night, the seconds seemed to go on forever while they worked to fix their electronic issues. That has absolutely nothing to do with the caliber of their performance. But I do agree that it does sit a little uneasy that the recap sheets posted by BoA are cut off at the end and do not include the column that would show any penalties assessed, while all the other recaps from BoA contests thus far this season are not cut off. I think compassion and grace are important things and if the judges chose not to assess penalties to Hebron that is certainly their prerogative. The rules absolutely allow this. A full, uncropped recap sheet would provide full transparency and help to dispel any whispers of favoritism or "special treatment". -
In looking at the recaps, its curious that Azle was actually 10th in prelims, but did not make an appearance in finals. Was this perhaps their homecoming weekend? I know several bands have elected not to participate in finals (should they qualify) so their students could participate in homecoming activities.

What methods do you folks use to move your cases of plumes? Do you use the little plastic dollies that come with them? Just plain old carry them around? Use a cart or wagon? Do you take them to football games / contests in something other than the 63-tube cases they are stored in? Just looking for ideas or ways that might be better than what we're doing right now. In our program, the chaperones handle pluming and de-pluming the kids. Our plumes are transported in their cases on the buses with us and the kids, so we either have multiple people each carrying a case, or we have used a collapsible wagon as well. The plumes used to go on the truck, but we actually had the truck guys forget to load them once - like literally we were driving off and there was a little stack of plume cases sitting all by it's self in the middle of the parking lot 😆 - so we've just brought them with us on the buses ever since. But they're bulky and cumbersome and sometimes we have to trek a good distance from the buses to where we're actually going to plume the kids. Any creative things you all are doing?

They're definitely taking Area seriously... so seriously that they're not even attending their own home football game the night before Area. Game location is NOT the nice BISD turf field, but the old grass field that Haltom and Richland used up until the new turf field at Birdville was built. They don't want to risk twisted ankles or ruined props due to an uneven grass field, so they got permission to not even attend this game. -

That actual wordage: A. Brief Explanation of Proposed Recommendation This amendment to Section 1107, State Marching Band Contest, would change the contest from an alternating-year format to an every-year format. B. Factual and Policy Justifications The state marching contest is currently held in alternating years with 1A/3A/5A conferences competing in odd years and 2A/4A/6A conferences competing in even years. This is the only UIL contest across all divisions – athletics, academics, and music – that is held in an alternating year format. Statewide band director survey has indicated support for holding the contest every year for all conferences and the marching band rules advisory committee has passed a proposal recommending that the contest be held every year for all conferences. Superintendent survey would provide more input to determine the level of member school support for this rule change. This proposal could become effective either in the 2023-24 or 2024-25 school year, pending all logistics being determined. C. Proposed Recommendation Section 1107(a) of the UIL Constitution and Contest Rules would be amended as follows, pending approval by the Commissioner of Education: Section 1107: STATE MARCHING BAND CONTEST. (a) CONTEST SCHEDULE. The state marching band contest will be held ANNUALLY FOR EACH CONFERENCE. on the following schedule: (1) Odd Numbered Years: Conferences 5A, 3A and 1A (2) Even Numbered Years: Conferences 6A, 4A and 2A D. Potential Fiscal Impact of the Proposed Rule to Member Schools Participating schools would incur related expenses. E. Legislative Council Consideration; Effective Date The Standing Committee on Music moves that the Legislative Council pass this amendment, to be effective August 1, 2023, if approved by the Commissioner of Education. Last hurdle is approval by the Commissioner of Education. Recommendation is to be effective for 2023 season, but could be 2024 if logistics prove to be challenging. -
