I’ve seen people praising the heck out of Carmels show this year, some even say it’s the best show theyve seen from BOA. I just cannot see it at all. There are a multitude of shows that, in my book, blow that out of the water.

Lol. I marched that show, it wasnt that we were tired. Our underclassmen were just really bad.

I didn’t say that. There are definitely comparisons to be made.

Just wanted to make a thread so we can consolidate our thoughts regarding this ongoing conversation.

Okay Carmel honestly had decent design looking back. Visuals (Props and Drill) were really well written. Ive realized what makes it so boring is the lack of good music writing. That’s a HUGE pitfall in their shows. They sound like they play at barely mezzo forte, which majorly downplays the amount of emotional impact they can have. In addition, the music is just not challenging at all. If they had more challenging shows with the same general design, I would be a major carmel fan.

Have you been to a SA competition? They are far more interesting in every way. It’s actually competitive there.

Someone please, please explain to me how Carmel won GE. I am at an utter loss as to how that show won GE, yeah it was executed well visually, but that’s about it.

I just dont understand the exceedingly positive reception of their show design.

Quite honestly I just don’t understand it. Even if its more “Sophisticated”, there’s just no substance to their show design, theres no emotion. All they have is execution, and even then, there are programs in texas that outshine them in that. Im starting to feel like Carmel just has an unfair advantage at GN. It feels rigged, although I hesitate to throw that word out there. A sweep? No. There were other programs that should have taken GE. I can see visual and music kind of. Its either rigged or just poor judging in my eyes. SA is doing it right.

Even this year I’d still stay FloMo takes music. They dialed back their volume to pursue a better ensemble sound. They were playing at about 70-80% volume, and it allowed them to have a more delicate sound. However, they were still able to have far more impact than any of Carmels moments. Not to mention FloMo had cleaner music and it was far harder. I can’t really speak for other texas programs because I was in SA and it was incredibly loud.

I really don’t think it would have been a contest betweem FloMo and Carmel. FloMo had a stronger visual program. Carmel missed coverdowns where they did not, and fell short in places it should have been clean. The music caption I dont even have to argue. FloMo easily. GE im kind of unsure, but I think it would tilt towards FloMo due to the emotions, the colors, and the incredible execution.

That is some of the worst judging i’ve seen. Carmel is utterly boring.

Cont. thoughts: That show had a similar effect on both the crowd and judges that Leonardos Dream (FloMo 2016) had. That is quite an acheivement.

Oh I wouldn’t dispute that for a second. Absolutely incredible show design from whomever designs for VRHS. I would’ve preferred some more challenging music, but really thats my only complaint. Even so, the music was extremely well executed. However, UIL does not factor GE into their scoring. They are all about execution, and performance time is HUGE in UIL’s horribly flawed scoring system. After watching both FloMo and VRHS performances, I believe FloMo simply performed better than them, however they went extremely early, and VRHS went close to last. And again to clarify, I support the heck out of VRHS. They should have beaten hebron at BOA easy.
