  1. This is definitely a tough time for everyone around the world, and chances are, it could get even tougher. HOWEVER, I do feel saddened for our Texas groups who would have been attending the 2020 WGI World Championships in Dayton, OH. The competition was cancelled earlier this afternoon. "At the direction of Dayton & Montgomery County Public Health, and in consultation with the Ohio Department of Health, and Governor DeWine, WGI Sport of the Arts is canceling the 2020 WGI World Championships for Color Guard, Percussion, and Winds. The numbers involved in an event of this magnitude urge caution in light of recent national and international health concerns. Over nine days of competition, groups from 41 states and five countries would travel with over 16,000 participants. While we are deeply saddened to cancel these prestigious events, our priority is, and always has been the health and well-being of all those involved with our organization...…."
  2. Happy New Year!!! I'm planning on it (2/29 - 3/1). Looking forward to seeing our groups very soon!
  3. We were very fortunate to get our entire stadium rehearsal in this evening here in The Woodlands! Weather for rehearsal and Send-Off Performance tomorrow night is going to be dry but FRIGID (wind chills in the high 20s). The last time a TWHS Send-Off was this cold …… 2013. Hmmm. Safe travels to all! Looking forward to meeting many of you.
  4. Drive safe! It will be another "working" weekend; performing my usual pit crew duties (manning the generator). Enjoy all of the great performances! I will look forward to your thoughts during and afterward. I'll need to get you your sailors cap before Indy!
  5. Well, just like DCI, the Music and Visual Individual judges on the field do not venture more than five yards from the sideline. I first noticed this two years ago at Grand Nats. And yes, it’s very difficult to acquire an adequate sample this way, IMO.
  6. I appreciate the effort and information, "lost". Great list! As a proud Westfield graduate and former director, let me note a correction and two additions - 1985 Westfield 2nd (don't recall the score - Marion Catholic was Champion) First Texas band to Grand Nationals (and yes they were 4th in prelims) 1990 Westfield 2nd (95.30 - Plymouth-Canton Educational Park was Champion with 95.35) Second trip of any Texas band to Grand Nationals 1995 Westfield 2nd (96.45 - Center Grove was Champion with 97.00) Like many Texas bands, it would have been awesome to compete in Indy more often. Westfield can forever be proud of their Grand Nationals accomplishments - 3 second places, and 1 Eagle
  7. Hello World! I feel like the radio-show caller ("long-time listener; first-time caller"). I have been following ALL the commentary on TXBands since the very beginning and here is my first post! I doubt the content will be worth the 13-ish year wait! This will be my third trip to Grand Nationals - my first was as a competing band director, my second (two years ago) was as a band dad, and now my third (this November) as a proud TWHS Senior band dad, Pit Crew member, and Band Booster President. One of my biggest memories from being a student participant in the Houston Regional in 1982, 1983, and Ft. Worth in 1984, was meeting other band members in line for finals retreat - including the local groups, of course, but also folks from Comeaux, ED White, Lafayette, Kosciusko, and Pearl. We even continued writing back and forth through our student leadership, commenting on performances, and wishing groups well. Marching Bands of America (BOA now) really was a "different" contest that brought people together in a way other competitions did not. I applaud all of the more "seasoned" folks, like me, out there who continue support "our" programs. I look forward to meeting you; some of the folks I've been reading about over the past many years. On to San Antonio and Indy!
