It's usually the latter. Showing up the night before means getting hotels and bus cost and meals and- pretty expensive unless the district wants to foot the bill. In my experience, we just showed up super early to school. Sleepily shuffled around to get our stuff, grab breakfast, line up for inspection, load the busses, and knock out until you get there. It wasn't too bad in the moment, a little tiring obviously but it was an exciting day nonetheless.

Anything can happen with how odd the season has been but it's gonna be difficult for new faces to break into top 14 this year.

Aside from scoring, Bowie didn't really have as strong of a run like Waco. I can't say much for prelims since I missed it but it does seem like it did better based on scores. 9th definitely was a surprise but, I do feel the 3 above them did have stronger runs. Those two weeks or more in prep of Area is a lot of time for bands to improve. Between an early performance, the rain, and then having their finals run as well I imagine it was a long day for the performers.

Those 10th place scores in CTJ, RR, and Bowie prelims scores is insane work in true UIL fashion. Bowie's placement drop is unfortunate but McNeil, Westwood, and MGJ did have solid finals runs. I hoped to see some movement of top/bottom half but top 5 generally held steady give or take a few things during their respective runs. This time last year we would've already had our 6A state results so I wonder how much 3 days of rehearsal + BOASA will change how Area D does against each other in state.

I forgot how unforgiving the acoustics of Heros Stadium is. Any small stick out or weirdness is heard tenfold. On the plus side, it also amplifies things that can be harder to hear sometimes.

They did good! I really can't say much in critique, overall it was a good run.

UIL can be so...unpredictable sometimes that I don't even think I could assume placements. It could be a complete toss up. At best I could expect Reagan, CR, Bowie, aaand RR? At 5th it's just gonna be a matter of finals runs. I'd loooove to see McNeil advance to state. They're working so hard and seeing them do so well this season has been exciting. Perhaps they can slip into that 5th slot? It's gonna be a long Saturday, thank goodness for the Buccees on the way.

Prelims & Finals are available as separate tickets, so yes you'd need to purchase both. I've found buying the tickets for BOASA specifically is cheaper at the Alamodome. BOASA tickets are sold through Ticketmaster so there's additional fees added to the cost. Buying on-site avoids those fees. I've never seen tickets sell out so it's very unlikely, the Alamodome has a loot of seating. Welcome to the band world!!

I have to wonder how much of this was Baylor's choice, especially the seating. Not allowing spectators on the second level meant upselling their dining experience on the second level, by the times finals started I saw parents flocking to the check in area. They had a second concessions booth open but realized it caused people to sit on the away side so they closed it by finals. Which also doesn't make sense as to why that area was closed off. I've seen concert tickets in the Austin area be cheaper than these day passes. I think BOA Waco at McLane could be an incredible experience because it's such a nice area & stadium but alas.

Westlake pulling ahead was honestly pretty crazy. Hearing DS get a music caption then called for 4th got a gasp out of me. Although, I probably would've just placed them at 3rd at the end of the night. They've been pretty neck and neck with Bowie since BOA CenTx & TMC but Bowie seems to have improved decently since their CenTx placement.

Scores are good to see the gap between bands within the contest itself but I try not to compare them from contest to contest. That's why a lot of people look at rankings to make predictions at other events and make judgement on where a band is in the season.

@cr if you see this and I know you will 🥸 if you perform with that same energy and volume as you did during the encore you'd be doing some crazy numbers...

I'm worried about the potential CR > Bowie bottleneck. CR got some big props to haul off field and Bowie generally lines up their props along the end zone. Hopefully no issues in a couple minutes :") Whew, it went okay 😅
