  1. 3A DI - Half time: Malakoff 7, Franklin 0. Eat your heart out, defensive coordinators. It's a struggle out there for points today.
  2. 3A D1 - End 1Q: Malakoff 7, Franklin 0. Franklin was driving to tie the game, but a fumble in the endzone brings a painful ending to a promising drive.
  3. 2A DI Half time: Albany 21, Mart 3 - Albany really starting to take control of the game towards the end of the first half. Really have a hard time seeing Mart getting back into this one.
  4. Got a defensive slugfest here in the first game of the day. Mart leads Albany 3-0 after one quarter in the rematch.
  5. How dominant was Timpson last night? Well, Terry Bussey had a 97-yard touchdown pass to Dacorian Johnson (longest in state championship history in any classification), ran for a 93-yard touchdown (longest in 2A state championship history) and finished with 566 combined passing and rushing yards and six total touchdowns. Talk about putting your name into the UIL state championship history books! (Also, Timpson when 58-3 in the Terry Bussey era. Finally got over that last hurdle to win it all.)
  6. You can probably say goodnight to this one. Timpson up 14-0 early in the second quarter, and Tolar is struggling to do anything with the football. That and Timpson has Terry Busey, who is basically a cheat code in 2A.
  7. Second game to end with the 45-point mercy rule for six man. Grayson Rigdon now has three state titles ... as a junior — back-to-back with Benjamin and one with Strawn. And apparently that's par for the course for the Rigdon family. https://www.texasmonthly.com/arts-entertainment/rigdon-family-six-man-football-benjamin-high-school/
  8. 1A D2 - End 1Q: Benjamin 28, Oglesby 20 These officials are ... something. Lot of questionable calls going Benjamin's way at the moment.
  9. Forgot to mention that six man has a 45-point mercy rule in the second half. Rare mercy rule win for Gordon in the state title game. Also, the Longhorns are a young team, so expect to see them back in the title game next year.
  10. State championships are underway with the 1A DI title game between Westbrook and Gordon. Six man is a wildly different game than the normal 11 man game, and I kind of like it.
  11. Hey, stop me if you've heard this one before: Duncanville and Galena Park North Shore will play for the 6A DI state title. Third-straight year and fifth time in six years. Simply incredible run these two programs are on.
  12. Conference and division cutoffs have been announced! Cutoffs: https://www.uiltexas.org/athletics/conference-cutoffs School Enrollment Numbers (from the UIL): https://www.uiltexas.org/files/alignments/Enroll_all_24_26_update_12_7.pdf
  13. And then there were none. Cedar Park got dismantled 44-20 by A&M Consolidated. And Celina fell to Stephenville in a 7-3 defensive slugfest. So no Texas Double this year. Will likely go through the candidates who might contend for this feat in 2024 when I get the time.
  14. Thanks! I completely forgot to update this thread over the weekend. As mentioned, Cedar Park advances to the regional semis. Celina also advanced in 4A DI Region II where they will play Stephenville in what should be a fantastic Thanksgiving weekend battle. We did, however, lose 3A champ Whitesboro who fell 60-19 to Bushland. Bonus fun fact: if Celina and Frisco Panther Creek win this weekend, we'll have a battle between 1st and 2nd place in 4A state marching band for the Region II title. In fact, the top 3 in 4A are 3 of the 4 remaining teams in Region II.
  15. Welp, kiss of death from me, apparently. Lake Travis knocks off Vandergrift 13-10 on a last-second field goal. Elsewhere, Cedar Park comes back to beat New Braunfels Canyon 20-16. Celina rolled over Paris 49-14. And Whitesboro comes back to beat Tuscola Jim Ned 35-34.
  16. It's no secret that Texas high school marching band and football go together like peanut butter and jelly. They are two peas in a pod. They are — well, you get the idea. So that brings me to this question: has anyone completed what I call the "Texas Double". That is, has any school had their marching band go to the Alamodome in late October/early November and win the state marching band title and then their football team go to AT&T Stadium in December and walk out with a football state title? The answer is (surprisingly or unsurprisingly depending on your point of view) is yes, it has happened, but it's extremely rare. In fact, it's happened only twice. Cedar Park was the first to do it in 2015, nabbing the first of five-straight 5A titles in marching band and then defeating Mansfield Lake Ridge in the football state title game (in Houston because poor location decisions were made that year). Argyle completed the feat in 2020, winning the first of back-to-back marching band titles and then defeating Lindale in the 4A DI state title game. (And for the record, no one has completed the "Texas Treble" (marching band - football - volleyball).) So that brings me to my next question: will we see someone complete the "Texas Double" this year? Let's take a look at the contenders. 6A - Vandergrift - Vandergrift is probably our best hope for someone winning both this year, but it's going to be a long shot. The Vipers start off in bi-district play facing off against Lake Travis. Then in the regional final, they'll probably have to face Westlake. And then things really get tricky with possible match ups against Galena Park North Shore and Duncanville in the state semis and finals respectively. If you're new to TXHSFB, North Shore and Duncanville have played each other in the four of the last five 6A DI state title games. If the Vipers pull it off, it will be more than a well-earned feat. But it's still a long shot. 5A - Cedar Park - The Timberwolves are in the playoffs, and we know anything can happen in the playoffs. Most of the DCTF crew has them losing Friday night. But even if they get through, they would still have a lot of work to get out of Region III. And then of course there's Aledo sitting there in the state title game. 2015 more than likely is not repeating this year. 4A - Celina - Historically, Celina has always been a contender to win in football. But the Bobcats face an uphill battle this year. There's a potential regional semifinal match up with Region II favorite Stephenville. And if they survive that, Frisco Panther Creek (who Celina beat for the marching band title, but lost to in the last week of the football regular season) awaits in the region final. If they survive that gauntlet, I think they can get to AT&T stadium, but Kilgore or Boerne will be a tall task in the final. 3A - Whitesboro - I'm going to be honest, I don't see Whitesboro getting out of the second round, and even if they did, Brock is going to with the region going away. 2A - Rivercrest - Rivercrest did not make the playoffs. 1A - Menard - Menard did not make the playoffs. Overall, I don't think we're going to see anyone pull off the "Texas Double" this year. But this is sports where the unexpected happens a lot, so we shall see.
  17. DeSoto vs. Aledo in a potential state semifinal would be must-see TV through. No disrespect to teams in Region III or IV, but that would be the actual state title game.
  18. Unfortunately I have to be in the office tomorrow. But I should be able to catch finals online in the evening.
  19. Recaps have been posted: https://smbc.uiltexas.org/ Only a one point difference between Menard and Irion County.
  20. 1st Place/Gold Medal/State Champion: Menard 2nd Place/Silver Medal: Irion County 3rd Place/Bronze Medal: Cross Plains 4th Place: Whiteface 5th Place: Knox City 6th Place: McDade 7th Place: Baird Congratulations to everyone on an outstanding season!
  21. Great job tonight, Cross Plains! Wonderful show performed at a high level. Congrats on an outstanding season, y'all!
  22. That was an amazing performance, Irion County! Love the melding of Rhapsody in Blue and Bohemian Rhapsody. Congrats on a wonderful season!
  23. Well done, Menard! Outstanding flute and trombone solos. Congrats on a great season, y'all!
  24. Wonderful show, Whiteface! Great use of the electric guitars. Also, they are listed with 103 performers, the most of any 1A group today. Would be curious to know if everyone at the school is in the band as for the last realignment they turned in an enrollment 88. They've got a good shot of at least heading back to West Texas with a medal.
  25. We'll get them after finals results are announced. Personally, I'm a big fan of not knowing full prelims results until after finals as it makes the finals retreat more exciting.
