  1. Now that I'm in college, all I do is study...oh, and I play clarinet for the UT Symphony Band. Back in high school, though, I was super involved. Aside from being involved in band (section leader, principal clarinet player, and VP), I was Student Council president, NHS historian & I was in PALs senior year. *sigh* I miss those days sometimes..lol
  2. Yeahhh, but Texas DID beat you guys 52-10 just a few weeks ago...lol How's life at Rice going, anyway? Have you pulled any all-nighters yet?
  3. Wow, that's weird...2/3 etudes for clarinet auditions this year were from my freshman year (2003-2004) as well. I guess TMEA really DOES repeat etudes, after all. Anyway, good luck to everyone this year! I, on the other hand, need to practice for my Symphony Band audition for this semester...the key word being NEED lol
  4. That makes sense, takigan. Does anyone have the full results from Region 19? I know Kingwood & Dobie were chosen to advance, but I was wondering the placement of the rest of the schools. Thanks to anyone who can answer (or attempt to answer)!
  5. Because it's the end...and you can't wait to get out!! Hah. Is it a good idea to take an English class, an upper-division History class AND a Greek mythology class at the same time next year? I'm kind of wondering how many papers I'll have to write.......
  6. Yay You'll love UT, and I really suggest you attend freshman orientation this summer. Not only is it totally fun, but you get first choices in registering for classes for next semester. I also suggest buying the sports package so you can attend the football games HOOK 'EM Sarah (class of 2011)
  7. I think I actually screamed "NO!!" when I saw that lol.. but yeah, I also forgot today was April Fools Day..it's been a busy couple of weeks, to say the least
  8. I'm glad I could help...I just didn't want you to miss out on possibly the best year of band. Or, at least, i didn't want you to keep asking "What if..?" Good luck!
  9. I really do understand how you feel....I tried out for drum major twice and didn't make it. In fact, the 2nd time I auditioned, I was the ONLY one not to make it. It was really embarassing for me, and I just wanted to quit. I didn't think I could handle another year of being in band, especially because our band program was suffering; our head band director went to another school, we had been switched from 4A to 5A, and we had SECTION LEADERS in the band who just didn't even care how we did anymore. The sad thing is, we had done very well in marching and concert competitions before, and I had made the region band my sophomore & junior years...but I wasn't feeling it anymore. I felt as if nothing was going my way, and there was no point in staying in band if I wasn't going to be a music major in college. I also didn't think I would be able to pull off my ultimate dream of making the all-state band on 5A. After talking with my mom, I decided to give it another year...if anything, I would at least have a ton of fun with my friends. In the end, I didn't make All-State (I didn't even advance to area a 3rd year in a row) and we didn't do well at all in marching competition, but I'm glad I stayed in band. It made my senior year that much more special to me because I got to spend my most important band moments with my friends. I mean, nothing beats the feeling you get when you march off the field with your high school band for the last time. Nothing beats playing with your high school band at your high school graduation in your cap and gown, knowing that this would never happen again. I think that without band, I would have had a lonely senior year, and I'm glad I stayed. I know you feel like band may not be worth your time, but I think you should REALLY think about it before getting out of it. Obviously it's a big part of your life, and it'll be very difficult to give up. If you're still not sure by the time you fill out your schedule, it's probably best to put it on your schedule FOR NOW and think about it longer. You should be able to get out of it if you need to. Good luck in your decision!
  10. Just a hint of advice from someone who has gone through the whole "WHICH COLLEGE SHOULD I GO TO? OMG I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!" (and I was only choosing from two schools), I think that you guys should go wherever you want to go..of course, go to the college that accepts you, as well lol. Just because someone thinks you're "not right" for a specific college (a lot of my friends didn't initially approve of me going to UT because it was a party school and I'm soo not like that) or wish you wouldn't go away doesn't mean you should listen. This is probably one of the first decisions you'll make as an adult, and you really have to do this one for yourself. I know it's a lot of pressure, but at this time next year, you'll be proud of your decision. I know I am proud of my decision to become a Longhorn, even if my decision didn't really happen until April of last year! I only say this because I have a friend who WANTS to go to Nebraska and is thinking of staying in Houston because some of our mutual friends & her boyfriend want her to stay home...I'm afraid she won't take the same advice I'm giving yall.
  11. UT Symphony Band is playing -British Eighth March (I play 2nd part) -O Magnum Mysterium (I don't play this) -March from "Symphonic Metamorphisis" (I play 3rd) -Blue Shades (I play 2nd) -Lincolnshire Posey (I play 2nd) I'm not sure which ones we're playing for some high school in April (I think Austin HS?) and which ones we're playing for our last concert at the end of April, but we're practicing them all. And yes, I think we're playing ALL movements of Lincolnshire..haha
  12. Gosh, all I got as an incoming freshman at UT was a free Longhorn hoodie. I want an iPhone! LoL
  13. Pieces I've played that I absolutely adore: -October (I've never played it in concert, but I have two copies from two years from high school when we were going to play it, then didn't) -Southern Harmony: played it in last night's UT Symphony Band concert & was sad to turn it in -Second Suite in F: played it my sophomore year in high school. I guess I'm biased because I had the clarinet solos, but I just LOVE it -I can't think of the name, but I played it in region band last year and it had an amazing clarinet part. I want to say Albanian Dances, but I'm not sure.. -Cajun Folk Songs: takes me back to the junior high days when Ticheli was new (to me). It's nostalagic -Pretty much any Sousa march. My old band director was in love with Sousa or something, but for good reason. Pieces I've Listened to and Adored: -O Magnum Mysterium: I didn't play in this song, but select people from my band did in our concert last night. It's so beautiful -Red Line Tango: I am jealous of the people who got to play this in high school. Grr. I'll have to continue this later, I guess. I have to leave for a meeting and then do la tarea de espanol. Ugh.
  14. Our band director mentioned something to us about playing Lincolnshire Posey (Posy?) yesterday during class...I won't say anything for sure until I pick up my part in the music library lol
  15. For our second concert in March (?), the UT Symphony is playing: -March from "Symphonic Metamorphosis" (I have no idea if i spelled that right..) -Blue Shades That's all I know so far
  16. ahh okay. Good to know lol..thanks Ralph. See ya in government tomorrow morning
  17. and now...time for some humor (sorry the pic is so small...I can't figure out how to get it bigger even though I clicked "do not resize") So, uh, it rained during the UT vs. Kansas State game in September. This is the aftermath. We also lost. It was AWESOME
  18. I think we're all halfheartedly doing this now...I mean, the horns won. Can we just claim a victory? Trumpet 19 (-) Horns 170 (+)
  19. Because you're not gifted like me, who has a habit of doing that while playing clarinet Why am I so horrible at chemistry? Or any science, for that matter?
  20. NOOOOOOO!!! I love E-Zo...craaaapp. That stuff rocks & saves my mouth!
  21. Maybe someone moved the toaster in your bathroom & toasted them there? Just a guess. Why is it required for a HISTORY major to have a zillion SCIENCE classes?
  22. Noope Trumpets 72 (-) Horns 117 (+)
  23. Trumpets 81 (-) Horns 108 (+)
  24. My old high school will be suffering in football next year....they got North Shore (5A state champs in '04 or '05..I can't remember) on top of Port Arthur Memorial, who also dominated the football region the past two years. Needless to say, I'm happy I'm a Longhorn now =] (by the way, seniors, now is the time to visit your prospective colleges. UT gives campus tours! I saw them today & remembered how small I felt last year lol) Hook em!
  25. Trumpets 94 (-) Horns 95 (+) Even though I'm saddened that my high clarinets got eliminated, there's something else I didn't tell yall. I learned how to play french horn last year. Bring it
