I didn't say anyone else couldn't do it, I'm sure Crown or Phantom or the Cavies could, but its a REALLY difficult thing to do. Like, stupid hard. I probably worded that wrong, but such is life.

If you don't like it, don't watch the show. I personally think that its going to sound beautiful once they get the balance right. If anybody can pull off a blend of amped and acoustic, I think the Cadets could do it. While I wasn't too much of a fan of last year's show, this SOUNDS wonderful. Now I just gotta' see it.

Do Bartok!

Hey! This is the drum corps forum, so it should be allowed to be like DCP. Anywho, of the Vanguard shows I've seen, 1999 has been my favorite.

Does a show need a slow movement?
davidpowell replied to MartinHorn's topic in Drill Writers, Arrangers, and Composers Corner
I'm not saying it does. I'm saying Sevens and Ride were put onto the field enough times that... something ridiculous could happen. -

Oh so this is all about the marching arts? That makes more sense. But still. If somebody would have the balls to do a whole show of slow(er) music, I would freaking throw my body onto the field. Just because I'm tired of Hazo's music on the field. Nothing against him, but common' originality. EVERYTHING is big and loud and bunches of impacts, it gets old for me. -

Its not so much the shoving it down everyone's throats its the, "Hey, I can write good slow music, but Debussy or Whitacre or Vaughan-Williams or Barber can't". -
Recordings???
davidpowell replied to bored2damax's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
I have Candide done by the Isreal Philharmonic and done by Tokyo Kosei with Fennel conducting. I have a recording of Grainger playing Molly On The Shore on piano. -

Ok I couldn't keep quiet for any longer. OF COURSE their are bad composers out there. Many of them write for band. But you are in NO place to dictate what is worthy of our listening. Just because you don't like the music of Debussy or Whitacre or whomever because it doesn't have some "underlying deep driving emotion", which many of them do anyway, but you're too busy complaining to hear, doesn't mean you shove your meticulously developed theories down everyone's throat. For Christ's sake, stop it! Just be content with what you listen to and quit telling me that "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" isn't well written and that your "The Tragic Ostinato" or whatever its name may be is. Thanks. -
You don't have little sisters, though... I'm jealous.

I can't wait to hear Phantom and Crown's brass lines. Like hard core. Hopefully the Blue Devils get out of that, mehness, of last season. Cavies, yeah, same as always. Bluecoats' drumline is gonna' throw again. Right now, I think the top three will throw up between -Phantom -Cadets -Crown Yes, I think Crown is gonna' rock. They're going places, most definately.

Word, I heart euphoniums. But french horns are better, just so you know. Gotta' keep the low brass in their place. In the back.

Short but sweet
davidpowell replied to Fortisimo's topic in Drill Writers, Arrangers, and Composers Corner
Ok, so your slow pieces don't suck, but Debussy's and Mahler's do. Not pretentious at all. Anywho, about the piece. It sounds REALLY rushed. You could have done SO much more with it. It almost felt like it just kind of, got there, it didn't take you somewhere in getting to the climax. Not bad, but quite rushed. -

So basically, every piece needs to be serious and have some deeper meaning to it. Gotcha'. -

Subtleness has no affect on some, I suppose... Just so you know, the piece is about, as the title bluntly says is french, the afternoon of a faun. -

Haha, you're comparing Holst to Mahler? Anywho, of course I know what Bach wrote, and of course I know that it is genious. Its almost insulting that you suggest Bach, but we move on. And I agree, inane music is just that. However, the music I refer to is not inane. Are you familiar with Mr. Eric Whitacre? Mr. Samuel Barber? What about a guy named Vaughan Williams? Claude Debussy maybe? I could go on, but I shall not, but, the point being, you can make a statement without moving quickly to it. For starters, I suggest you listen to Pr -

Yes, if you listen to what is classified as "BAND" music. But when you get into the realms of Whitacre, Ticheli and so forth, it gets amazing. Just wondering, ever heard of a guy named Gustav Mahler? Yeah, his stuff tends to be kind of slow. And it tends to be some of the most genious stuff ever written. And just a little "side-idea", if you will, here: The majority of "fast and loud" shows are over-climactic, which is even worse than anti-climactic. -

Heh I would prefer the whole show be slow... That's just me though. -
Circular Breathing
davidpowell replied to mnkyman's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
I can do it, but not horribly well while playing, I lose support when I exhale with my cheeks. I saw Sergei Nakariakov (ridiculous trumpet player) do it during some really fast runs, and he did it extremely quickly, so if you didn't know about circular breathing, you wouldn't know he had done it. -
Solo & Ensemble
davidpowell replied to TRtrumpet's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
The Heiden sonata is HARD to play all the way through, pretty high tessitura. Personally, the 3rd movement is one of my favorite things ever. I, an ohioan, am playing Villanelle for our solo and ensemble contest. Gotta' get my high chops workin' again after I get my low ones in shape for 4th horn at all state. Sheesh. -
Hm... Bolero by Ravel is genius. Anything by Debussy is genius. The few Bartok things I've heard are quite fun. Morten Lauridsen's music is all very peaceful and has a certain sanctity to it. John Adams' music is suprisingly beautiful and approachable for minimalism. John Mackey is bizitchin'. Eric Whitacre, Jonathon Newman, Steve Bryant, and Jim Bonney are all incredibly innovative. Mahler is amazing if you have the time to sit down and listen to it. Stravinsky just goes without saying. Frank Ticheli has some amazing music for band, namely An American Elegy, Blue Shades, Gaian Visions, and Postcard. His choral stuff is also quite beautiful. Bernstein is a crazt mofo, and I love it. I could go on, but eh. Homework.

Other music writting software?
davidpowell replied to twizzlaar's topic in Drill Writers, Arrangers, and Composers Corner
I'm sidestepping because I know the general populus of this forum generally enjoys fast, loud, marching band music. Reading "Should a marching show have a slow movement?" or whatever that poll was further confirmed this. But if I must, I can show you some things I'm working on. I would show you something that's finished, but I don't think any of it is very good anymore. http://www.geocities.com/kingsmello/index.html The sonata is possibly going to be one movement of several. The atonal sketch is a quirky little thing I've been messing around with for wind ensemble.
