  1. Seven Judge system, I assume they have more than seven to rotate between performances. The categories are: music ensemble, brass, woodwinds, percussion, visual ensemble, visual individual, and content/design. Ordinal system for ranking, judge’s preference for tie breakers. listen to the danpod podcast from state last season to get a better explanation. https://www.uiltexas.org/files/music/UIL_5A-6A_State_Judge_Manual_(7-judge).pdf
  2. I'd say the thing that separate these programs is consistency. The elite programs create not just success, they create a legacy of success that builds year after year. I can't remember which band/year but I vividly recall senior speeches during section time for one band's final performance at BOA basically saying to the next class "Be the seniors you wish you had". That's the kind of leadership that creates success. They don't happen overnight and require a culture of excellence throughout every member of the band. The top programs understand how to foster that culture which is why they are consistently successful. That's why finals at State or BOA SA typically only has a few spots truly up for grabs while the rest are often the same small group of bands.
  3. That’s fair. Or Bridgeland either. I haven’t seen either on video just yet whereas all the bands I listed I’ve at least seen videos of or witnessed in person. Many deserving bands will miss finals and that’s a shame. But to even make it to the state contest is a huge testament to the fortitude of every one from these programs.
  4. Looking across state qualifiers, no Cedar Ridge is a huge shock. I think the following are highly likely finalists Coppell Waxahachie Hebron Marcus Flomo Reagan Round Rock CTJ (rumors of their demise greatly exaggerated) Pearland Woodlands Vandy Vista all are consistent finalists and short of a catastrophe, I don’t see any missing finals. That leaves LD Bell Westlake Westwood Lake Travis Dripping Springs fighting for the last two spots in finals (it’s 14 finalists this year right?) It’s going to be an exciting contest! It’s going to feel weird that it’s before BOA.
  5. I think it was Clark, not O’Connor that made finals. Also reminder that this finals isn’t top half/bottom half in case anyone is trying to read something from the performance order.
  6. I think Vandy did fine. This contest is always strange but I’d be surprised if they miss finals.
  7. Vandegrift performed at 12:45 http://www.uilmusicregion11.com/uploads/1/3/5/3/13535811/program_6a_area_h_oct_21_2023.pdf We can only hope to see them in finals.
  8. Here’s where info will be available. I feel like this is an area where there’s there’s some real tension as to who makes it. Will DS make state again? Will Bowie pull it off? Could CTJ really miss after winning state in 2020? Will McNeil or Churchill surprise almost everyone by making state? https://www.uilmusicregion18.com/area-dates-sites-and-schedules.html
  9. While I think the four state qualifiers will come from region 32, my sense is that it’s a top two/bottom two situation. I’m still predicting a win by Vista again and LT over Westlake. But this contest can yield surprising results so we’ll have to see on Saturday.
  10. Link to buy tickets https://checkout.square.site/merchant/17R6279MSCWDM/checkout/CFIITL3KBOZHG6SHXLC62X5L
  11. The schedule shows Vandegrift as region 29??? Nothing is guaranteed but that may be the best chance that a non region 32 band advances to the state contest from Area H this year. 😉
  12. Given Vista has won Area H going all the way back to 2018, I can’t imagine putting anyone else in 1st place. State becomes a completely different affair, but I feel entirely safe predicting a win for Vista Ridge here.
  13. Everyone at region 32 received a 1
  14. So Hebron and Flower Mound confirmed out. Looking forward to new faces in finals.
  15. For a second I thought you meant social media postings was used as the tie breaker, which would have really pissed me off. I think the story of this competition is Coppell dominance. They were sure fun to watch in person.
  16. Due to their uncanny ability to maximize at area, Vista Ridge will once again win the 6A Area H contest.
  17. Interesting lineup including Hebron coming down from the DFW area and defending champion Coppell. I wonder why Cedar Ridge doesn’t attend/get invited, surely they’d do quite well at this contest? contest info: http://www.dsthunder.org Official Schedule: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vRhfdkG6BRggng80tU9aTIFRVCEgLbMdtL-Q6o9VtYxQCaHvrEd5OT2sqARHwsQNwz5aC8KQQcQ-Oce/pubhtml?gid=815746519&single=true
  18. I think we should make Grand Nats, the super regional, the state championship, and TMEA honor band the Band Grand Slam. Several bands have completed three legs of this, Hebron poised to be the first to complete if they win Grand Nats next year.
  19. I believe the historical precedent is no out of state trips in consecutive years. Otherwise, Macy’s would have been 2022-2023 school year and GNats 2023 would have been 2023-2024 school year and a trip would have been “possible”. That still seems unlikely given the amount of fundraising required. As it were, if Vandy goes again, it would seem GNats 2024 would be the earliest edition they would conceivably attend.
  20. I would honestly LOVE for a time-limited rebroadcast of every contest to be an option. I know kids would love to be able to watch themselves perform after a memorable contest. Not every band has the time and resources to do a high quality recording of themselves at contests and I can imagine this being a decent revenue stream for Box5 or Flo or whoever. I understand copyright issues are complicated but what a win this would be for just about everyone.
  21. Not mine but here you go
  22. No video livestream from this contest right?
  23. I just realized that none of the college bands ever has a front ensemble. Why is that?
  24. That Sachse closer was awesome!!! Love all the gold.
