2022 BOA North Texas (Oct. 15)
Time Warp replied to LeanderMomma's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
My band pet peeve is when someone makes a post praising a program and then someone butts in with a “Don’T SlEEp oN” because it doesn’t explicitly mention another program. -

If Broken Arrow came to SA this year they would have been able to beat everyone barring Vandegrift and Hebron. Let’s loose this texan ego a little bit. -

Fair Judges

Let’s clear up a few things: 1. Props falling down is not the students fault. A prop malfunction should never dictate whether a band advances or not. If we went by malfunction of technology or props as a metric for advancing then some of the best bands in the history of UIL or BOA would have had their seasons caught short at the region level. I believe Cedar Parks front stands all fell down during region 2019, they won state championship. Using props as an excuse for why a band should not have advanced is an absurd metric. 2. Being loud \=/ Playing Well. Being loud is not better, see Carmel 2018. Not Texas loud but with a precise crisp balance. See Vandegrift 2018, very loud but lacking in balance in their San Antonio performances (They remedied this by UIL and cleaned up enough to medal.) A group is better to be quiet but balanced than loud and drowning out the woodwinds or front ensemble of the group. Also if you “couldn’t hear the band” the judges all the way up in the prsss boxes definitely could, check your ears. 3. UIL judges rarely look at colorguard. As much of a disservice as it is to colorguards even if a band had the most flawless or horrendous colorguard it doesn’t matter. See bands where the colorguards ability slightly does overtake the band like Eastlake and you don’t really see a difference in their visual scores because of it. 4. Scores are all over the place. Let’s take a deeper look. • Frenship who you insinuate was possibly impossible to hear and a mess had every single music judge putting them in the top 2, so the judges definitely had no issues hearing them at all. •Are scores all over the place? Sure. Let’s take a deeper look. Every single band had at least 1 outlier in their scores. Sure. That is no need to so rudely and disrespectfully talk about these programs though. Your rudeness has constituted rudeness on my end. Stop talking so much unnecessary **** about band programs and spread the **** love. I’m sorry but I care about band too much to have kids potentially reading these disgusting comments. Good day. -
2021 5A UIL SMBC (Nov. 1 & 2)

The list is literally the single coldest take anyone has ever had on this forum. It matches up almost exactly to placements previous in the season. The only way it’s unusual is if you you yourself are being biased for your program. -

Why are you so insistent on talking bad about other bands? -

Why are you being so aggressive? There’s literally nothing biased based on that list. Calm down. -

UIL Area B 6A 2021
Time Warp replied to Seth_Lev's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I think there’s a genuine case to be made about splitting up this area, I don’t say this about Area D or any other area because frankly they may be tough, but they do have overall a pretty even spread. This area is just so unforgiving it’s almost excessive especially when there’s other ways to split -

UIL 5A Area D 2021
Time Warp replied to Dog885's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Nobody is neglecting wealth as factor. Nobody is dismissing it. The issue comes when you act like others are ignoring it when they make the counterclaim that it doesn’t all chalk up to that. -
UIL 5A Area D 2021
Time Warp replied to Dog885's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Also what was the point of raising these issues in this area specifically? Obviously these issues are overarching in the entire country, why are we singling out Area D? How do you think those Dripping Springs students who come out on Saturdays to learn their dots without being asked to feel when their hard work is simply tossed up to being wealthy? How do you think those Seguin students feel when they see you imply they’ll never be successful because of their economic status? -

I’m not sure what you want these bands to do. Do you want their parents to stop helping out their children's band program altogether because not everyone has access to parents that can help out? Do you want these bands to stop providing students with individualized private lessons to students who can afford them? This post isn’t constructive in any way, it’s just tearing down hand programs with no aim or reason. Your comment about these things being inappropriate in a public school setting confuses me a lot. Texas is known for excessive bells and whistles in many many many aspects of its high school activities regardless of the wealth disparity in the state. Look at these high schools gigantic football stadiums as an example, would you consider these also inappropriate in a public school setting? This comment is really confusing and just feels aimless and non-constructive at all. Again, what is the point of this post? What are you gaining other than testing programs down? You forget these advantages mean nothing unless programs genuinely put in effort. Look at Lake Travis for example, they’ve been perennially known for being “That Rich School” but their marching success didn’t come until 2018 when they actually genuinely started funelling resources into the band program and upped the motivation in the program. Without hard work and dedication any monetary advantage is largely moot. Look at Roma, by your very own comments they should not be able to compete with the other bands. After all they are at a rate of 82% of their students living in economically disadvantaged conditions and they still work hard as heck to fundraise, they still work hard as heck to provide the best opportunities for their students and they still succeed. Bands at a monetary disadvantage are not perpetually trapped in the shadows.
