  1. Results from preliminary round taken as final due to inclement weather (with ordinal points). Top 5 advanced to state: 1st - The Woodlands (5) 2nd - North Shore (14) 3rd - College Park (15) 4th - Tomball Memorial (16) 5th - Klein Oak (27) 6th - Oak Ridge (41) 7th - Klein (46) 8th - Spring (46) 9th - Grand Oaks (47) 10th - Klein Cain (53)
  2. It's really 32 bands in this area because Carver and Avalos Tech don't field Marching Bands as they are technology magnet schools in Aldine ISD. Also, for years now, MacArthur, Eisenhower, and Humble have received ratings of 2 and haven't qualified for Area. So, that really leaves this area stuck at 29 area qualifiers. Aldine MacArthur has been close to a 1 since they have gotten 1-2-2 from the 3 region judges two years in a row. That would be great to have 6 state qualifiers. The odds are definitely better with the additional of the Magnolia schools.
  3. I don't think Houston has ever had 4 in finals before. Houston was very strong in the 90's but there were only 5 or 7 finalists total back then. In fact, the last time they had 3 in finals was 2004: Langham Creek, TWHS, Clements
  4. The numbers do back that up, although the quality of bands is never evenly distributed. Avg # of Finalists Block 1 26 1 Block 2 29 1 Block 3 20 4 Block 4 16 5 Block 5 17 3
  5. It will still be 5 bands that advance to State. Per UIL advancement procedures, it is based on the number of bands that QUALIFY for Area, not the number that actually attend. The same situation occurred in 2021 when 26 bands qualified for Area but only 23 attended. In that year, 5 went to State.
  6. Kingwood, Atascocita, and Cleveland will all be preparing for the State Military contest and skip Area. This is what they did in 2021 and their calendar’s confirm this for 2023.
  7. Does anyone know if full recaps will be posted? I don’t see them on the website but they were posted in prior years.
  8. This is the same order I would pick as of today, but I'm going to wait until after the Region 9 competition (Tues, Oct 17th) to make final predictions. A few of these bands still haven't performed their full show and I hope to see most of them in person again before Area.
  9. The link to last Friday's performance was posted on the "Early season videos" thread. You have to scroll to the end since they played after the homecoming game.
  10. There was a PBS show years ago called “Arts in Context” that featured the Akins Marching Band in one of their episodes. It was Season 3, Episode 11 called “Marching to Nowhere”. Here is the link to the full episode: https://www.pbs.org/video/arts-context-marching-nowhere/ The episode synopsis: “Marching To Nowhere follows a low-income high school marching band as they get ready for the UIL State Marching Band Contest and examines the financial challenges that face all music programs in the state and the impact this has on the community, the schools, and the students.” It originally aired 08/23/13. I just watched it. Really promotes marching band positively while talking about the challenges that are still applicable today.
  11. TMEA website has updated the finalists for all the competing classifications. Here are the 10 finalists for the 3C classification which includes Middle School / Junior High Schools that feed into 6A (and some 5A) programs. Adams JH - Katy ISD Argyle MS - Argyle ISD Artie Henry MS - Leander ISD Berry Miller JH - Pearland ISD Canyon Vista MS - Round Rock ISD Cedar Park MS - Leander ISD Keller MS - Keller ISD Killian MS - Lewisville ISD Knox JH - Conroe ISD Kranz JH - Dickinson ISD
  12. The Area F 6A thread has been quiet compared to the other Areas! Last year, only 5 total ordinal points separated 4 of the 5 bands that advanced to State. With 5 spots again advancing to State and The Woodlands back in the competition, at least 1 band that advanced to State last year likely won't advance this year. Here are my predictions: hopefully I can get a few correct! State qualifier predications in bold. 1 -- The Woodlands Favored to finish first. They have not placed behind another Houston area band since 2016. This is a well-produced and entertaining show even if not to the level of last year. 2 - 4 -- College Park, Klein Oak, Oak Ridge I’d personally put Klein Oak ahead visually and College Park and Oak Ridge ahead musically but overall, these three could go in any order. It will still take solid runs from these bands to not slip lower. 5 - 8 -- Klein Cain, Tomball Memorial, North Shore, Klein Collins The last State spot will probably come down to one of these 4 but I personally view Klein Cain as the favorite if their more difficult opening piece is clean. However, of these 4, North Shore looks like they have the most improved show vs last year, when they finished 7th. Prior to last year, North Shore qualified for State 3 consecutive times so don't count them out. Tomball Memorial finished 3rd in 2021 so I have a hard time placing them this far down, but their excellent performance last year will be hard to match. 9 – 14 -- Spring, Grand Oaks, Tomball, Westfield, Klein, Kingwood These seem like the bands competing for finals positions. Spring hasn’t missed a UIL Area final dating back at least 30+ years, but with other schools consistently improving and new schools obtaining 6A status, it will be a challenge to maintain this run long-term. I still expect them to make it to finals this year but haven’t seen their show. Hopefully, every band has their best run of the year!
  13. Actually, only 27 of the 32 bands qualified for this Area so it will be 5 bands advancing to state. Same number as last year.
  14. Quick question. Is it always J1 and J2 that switch with J4 and J5? Or, could J2 and J3 switch with J4 and J5?
  15. Really close scores! Congratulations to: College Park: 1st time Area Champion and 3rd trip in a row to State! Klein Oak: 1st trip to State! Tomball Memorial: 1st 6A State advancement! Oak Ridge: 3rd trip in a row to State! Klein Cain: 1st trip to State in the school's 5th year of existence!
  16. Finals Schedule (Random Draw) 5:30 Westfield 5:45 Klein Collins 6:00 Klein 6:15 College Park 6:30. North Shore 6:45 Klein Oak 7:00 Spring 7:15 Tomball Memorial 7:30 Klein Cain 7:45 Oak Ridge
  17. Someone will probably post it here. Wish I could see my alma mater PSHS. Marched with them in 1992 …. the only time the school ever advanced from Area to State. I really want to find a video from that year so I can show my son who is Freshman in a Houston area band that has a chance of going to State this year.
  18. Here is the UIL rule: "Should fifteen or more bands qualify for advancement in a single conference for the area contest, one band for each five bands that qualified for advancement to the contest shall be certified for advancement to the state contest." Abtwitch confirmed over on the Megasheet thread that bands that choose the state military contest instead of Area (Kingwood and Atascocita in this case) still count as qualified for area.
  19. Area F 6A Prelims Schedule October 30th, 2021 - Galena Park Stadium Adjudicators: Matt Burke, Greg Dick, George Little, Rob Toups, Robert Vetter Qualifying Bands: 26 Attending Bands: 23 Advance to Finals: 10 Advance to SMBC: 5 Willis 9:00 Oak Ridge 9:15 Grand Oaks 9:30 Klein 9:45 Nimitz 10:00 Summer Creek 10:15 Tomball 10:30 Klein Forest 10:45 Westfield 11:00 Dekaney 11:15 ---------Lunch----------- Davis 12:15 Klein Cain 12:30 Spring 12:45 The Woodlands 1:00 MacArthur 1:15 Conroe 1:30 Tomball Memorial 1:45 College Park 2:00 Aldine 2:15 Klein Oak 2:30 Klein Collins 2:45 North Shore 3:00 Humble 3:15 Announcement of Ten Finalist ---------Dinner----------- Finals 5:30
  20. The 6A Area F Regionals are complete and 26 bands qualified for Area but three of those bands are not attending Area so only 23 will compete. An additional band is attending Area but will elect not to go to state. Is it certain there will be five and not four that will advance to State from Area F even with Kingwood and Atascocita declaring for Military state competition? I know the rule says “qualifying” rather than “attending” but just thought I would double check with one of the experts here given this is the first full year since state UIL Military contest started.
  21. Looks like all 6A bands from Region 9 received straight 1's today. In total, 26 bands qualified for Area F which should mean 5 will advance to state this year versus 4 spots in 2018. In combination with information above that TWHS is not attending state, there should be at least 2 bands going to state from this area who didn't qualify in 2018.
  22. The increase in scores in just one week did seem surprising … especially comparing last week Prelims to this week Prelims. Pearland +8.7, Oak Ridge +8.4, Westlake +7.9, SFA +6.2 with the average of all bands that competed in both being >5. Bridgeland seemed to be an outlier with a -1.15 vs last week. I don't know, maybe there is always more variation in Prelim vs Finals comparisons but interesting for sure. The largest driver of the increases seemed to be in the General Effect - Visual category with several +3 increases.
  23. It's $10 per car for parking. Should probably have cash but parking attendants are supposedly taking credit card as well. Also, there is less parking than normal due to construction on the north side of the stadium. Therefore, they may run out of parking mid-afternoon but BOA is providing shuttles from Oak Ridge High School down the street to the stadium as necessary.
