  1. Summit lost more than their head director. They lost everyone from the ground up. Howard Middle School directors went to Prosper ISD. Messrs Kanicki and Garcia are now at Trinity. Dr. Hart and Ms Hildebrand chose different career paths. I'm really proud of these kids for keeping the tradition of excellence alive at Summit.
  2. Arlington Lamar did Area and Waco BOA on the same day last year - I guess Martin isn't going to get outdone. It's nice to see Mansfield doing well. It's a shame that Mansfield ISD dismantled Summit - I guess they could no longer stomach an Arlington school representing MISD.
  3. Someone else was wearing Summit's "marshmallow peep" style from 2019 (It's good luck - Summit medaled that year)
  4. It was becoming a pretty substantial contest before COVID. Summit always went - it's their school district but Highland Park and many other notable programs were competing.
  5. I gotta admit, as fired up as Legacy was after their 10th place finish at Area last year, (which is still really good) I thought they would come back strong and take up the mantle from Summit who is having to completely reorganize. I didn't see Lake Ridge coming - and I should have. Mr Bonebreak's programs are as solid as they ever were at Summit.
  6. Told ya' y'all were sleepin' on Rock Hill
  7. Wow. Permian got a cold/flat instrument morning slot. Mojo usually goes later in the day. Looks like they paid a little more attention to distance traveled in scheduling A couple of years ago, Mansfield High pretty much had to get on the bus right after the football game for their morning slot.
  8. Yeah, that's new director's style. Past few years, Summit would pick music that would have a "park and bark" right away and they would go full face melt fortississimo. It's effective. It grabs your attention. But it's the new directors' show. They have a different vision. I wish them well.
  9. Looking forward to seeing Trinity's new directors' show. I think Rock Hill might break into the finals. Aledo and HP are always good. And getting to see my kiddo on the field is always great - even if it is only exhibition
  10. Wait! Highland Park is doing a BOA?
  11. A little disappointed that Martin and Arlington opted out. Sometimes P.O.C. is the only time I see Arlington High. Also missed Lamar. Still impressed that they did Area and BOA Waco in the same day last year I understand Martin not attending given the scoring last year. Summit still sounds like Summit and that's a good thing. Success breeds success. Hopefully, for Summit's former directors, it's success at a bigger school. Lots of work to be done there, but I wouldn't count Summit out yet. It was nice to see Seguin make finals. When your nextdoor neighbors are Martin and Summit, you kind of get forgotten.
  12. Summit has all new directors. Messrs Kanicki and Garcia are at Trinity. Dr Hart also left. Mr Nugent is at Prosper Rock Hill
  13. Top 20 is amazing. But if you're in the state marching band competition, your band has probably been picking up trophies, plaques, and medals all season long so the kids probably already knew they were pretty good
  14. It happens. 2 years ago, Mansfield pretty much had to leave the game Friday night, go back to the school, switch buses, and head out to Midland for BOA. The turnaround between BOA Waco and 5A State was ridiculously short for a few bands. No Sleep 'Til Medals are hanging around your neck and your Drum Major is holding the trophy
  15. MISD administration didn't do Summit (or partial Legacy) any favors with their "school of choice" initiative. Running off the talented directors at T.A. Howard and CTIS might have been a mistake. They seem to have mitigated it a bit by replacing them with very qualified directors and I hope they continue the culture of excellence that the Nugents and Ms. Hitz inspired. They still have Dr. Hart and the percussionists love Doc. One of the members in battery spent a lot of time with Lake Ridge and Mansfield battery at All Region Band, Orchestra, All Area auditions, MISD music theatre orchestra, etc..., but will not transfer from Summit because he won't leave Doc. Lake Ridge and Mansfield always bring it in 6A. Summit has been a success in 5A. Having Legacy and Timberview succeed and win will just add to keeping MISD a diverse and successful "Destination District". I wish nothing but success to the up and coming Legacy Bronco Band and believe that they will succeed.
  16. Not implying anything. Just pointing out a weird coincidence. As far as the "trajectory", Summit was sandwiched between Hendrickson and Johnson in the final results at BOA Midland - they're certainly competing at that level. Aledo has a fantastic show too. I fully expect them to advance at state. I just found it unusual that there was such a geographic division in the results.
  17. 12 - LASA - Austin area (but didn't have battery or really march much - wonderful show. I loved it) 11 - Burleson Centennial - DFW 10 - Midlothian - DFW 9 - Rock Hill - DFW 8 - Colleyville Heritage - DFW 7 - Summit - DFW 6 - Aledo - DFW 5 - Hendrickson - Austin area 4 - Johnson - Austin area 3 - Bowie - Austin 2 - Rouse - Austin area 1 - Cedar Park Austin area Weird coincidence? It's certainly unusual.
  18. It would be good to have Timberview in 5AD1 with Legacy and Summit (assuming of course Legacy doesn't move up and Summit's enrollment doesn't take a hit from the charter) But who's going to play the rivalry game with Arlington Seguin if they're all in 5AD1?
  19. You might be right. Her title is just "Band Director" Long story - I'll try to summarize: While riding the escalator at Midwest Clinic, I overheard a conversation between 2 women in front of me. Complaining that they should rename the event the "Midwest White Male Director Clinic" I walked past various rooms and ...yeah, they were correct. Later I was seated next to a bunch of white male directors with various school credentials pinned on their suits. Ms. Hitz takes the podium to conduct. One of the directors says, "Wow, she's beautiful." ... escalator ladies were right again. But then the other directors spoke up. "She's talented, she's smart, she has those kids in a high state of discipline, she's going to be running her own program pretty soon... All the accolades and superlatives that ANY band director would want to hear about themselves
  20. Well, it isn't Ohio State. No front ensemble. No woodwinds. Just brass and battery.
  21. Mansfield Legacy is floating right around 6A enrollment numbers. They'd be a really small 6A if they moved up. The opening of another charter on S. Cooper could move Mansfield Summit down to 5A Division 2. The Charter won't draw the talented band kids - no offense to Charters but they have been easy to find at All-Region. Dead last on the results page - but it will pull the overall enrollment down.
  22. Arlington Martin's show is a crowd favorite. I don't know how that will play with the judges, but it is popular. Like I said above, Mansfield is going to be 100%. Is it enough? Who knows? but I anticipate this being their best performance of the year. I don't remember being wowed by Duncanville's show this year at McKinney which is unusual because I remember their previous year's shows VERY well. Still, I wouldn't count them out.
  23. I knew Ms. Hitz wouldn't be an assistant director for long just from hearing the accolades of other band directors at Midwest Clinic. Just wait 'til her Middle Schoolers move up to high school. They will be a force in a few years.
  24. Ouch! Mansfield 10th again. They just saw fellow MISD school Legacy advance to finals and dreaded rival Summit advance to State at 5A Area F. Last time at Area B, Summit (first of 2 years in 6A) edged Mansfield out for 9th leaving Mansfield with 10th. Mansfield's Seniors remember that. They're definitely going to be motivated.
  25. That's happened to most really good programs. Only the Seniors at Summit remember the last time they were at Area. Black Rose was a fantastic show - consistent top finisher. They finished 9th at 6A Area B. The next year, The Last Ones - another consistent award winning show. Medaled at BOA. Made the finals in every show.... until Duncanville. Didn't even advance to finals. I'm sure most of the bands here have had that moment where they asked,"How did that happen?" It's a hard pill to swallow. But you don't stop. I hope Legacy continues to compete and compete well.
