It's not just visual effect. BOA's focus is on the entire package and effect of the show----the combination of music AND visual. Shouldn't it be that way? What's wrong with a really darn good designed show? For me, music and visual should be equal in marching band (and drum corps). Music shouldn't be focused more than visual and visual shouldn't be focused more than music.

Director Changes
mbui replied to Moose's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
I'm not surprised. What was his reason? I ask because he's done it before. In 2004, when he accepted the Lake Park HS (IL) position and then declined the position a few hours or days later. And, he resigned in July when he accepted the position at Ball HS in Galveston and then resigned to go to Marshall. He was also the director at Victoria Memorial HS a few years back and then left in the middle of the marching season. I don't know the circumstances behind that situation though. ------------------- New Ball High band director resigns post By Rhiannon Meyers The Daily News Published July 25, 2008 GALVESTON -
Accommodations for Marching Bands Affected by Hurricane Ike UIL Eight-Hour Marching Band Rule The UIL eight-hour marching band rule has been modified as follows to accommodate marching bands affected by Hurricane Ike. Marching bands representing schools closed due to Hurricane Ike will be entitled to 1.5 additional hour of rehearsal for each day of school missed. With school administration approval these hours may be added to the marching band rehearsal schedule once the school is back in session. Thus a school missing 6 days of school will have 9 additional rehearsal hours to use as they see fit between the time school resumes and the end of marching season. This accommodation applies specifically to the UIL Marching Band eight-hour rule. The Senate Bill 1 eight-hour rule limiting practice to no more than eight hours from before school Monday morning to the end of school on Friday is state law. It will remain in effect and must be observed. This means a band already committed to eight hours of rehearsal during the school week would have to schedule these additional hours after school on Friday or on the weekend. Marching Band Contest Schedules The UIL is in the process of examining existing contest schedules in affected regions to determine if a modification in contest dates or the creation of optional contest dates would be possible. Any revisions in dates will be posted on this website and distributed by the Region Executive Secretaries. Questions or Requests for Clarifications uilmusic@uts.cc.utexas.edu

Hurricane Ike
mbui replied to sakuradanc's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
I'm home. Finally. My town was hit pretty good. Down trees, power lines, and signs. The apartment complex next to me was destroyed. They don't have a roof anymore. Luckily, my apartment complex has electricity, water, cable, and internet since 60% of the town is without it. My apartment suffered some minor roof and water damage. The chimney flew off and took parts of the ceiling with it. The majority of the restaurants and gas stations are still closed, but I'm sure that will change once water and electric are all back online. All in all, it could have been a lot worse. I'm just glad to be home. -
Yeah, another misconception of BOA. BOA is not about props and visuals. Props and etc are the norm in the marching band activity as a WHOLE.

What shows have you seen?
mbui replied to longhornsax's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
It makes no difference. The show has been performed in public. It's not a "secret" anymore. -
Hurricane Ike
mbui replied to sakuradanc's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Angleton and the Brazosport area (Lake Jackson, Freeport & Clute) suffered minor damages. Flooding was more common down in Freeport and Surfside since it's right on the Gulf, but inland areas like Lake Jackson, Clute & Angleton came out alright. Just the usual down trees, electric poles, signs, and minor structural damage. I don't know what the power situation is like down in Lake Jackson, but the Angleton website says that 30% of the city has power. -

I live in Angleton in Brazoria County. 40 miles south of Houston and 20 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. I evacuated to San Antonio. I hate hurricane season. -
That's really unfortunate. I'm not going to single the guy out, this is just in general to some directors, but it kind of irks me when some of them refuse to take their kids to a certain contest because of their own personal agenda. Okay, don't like the judging system? No problem. You don't have to participate. Take them to the contest as spectators so THEY can enjoy the experience and watch some upper echelon bands. It's not only a moral booster, but it strives them to be better. That's how I see it.

2008 Duncanville Marching Invitational

I have yet to comment on this, but I am so surprised at how some North Texas people have never heard of Westlake before. Maybe some of you aren't really familiar with bands from across the state, but it seems like everyone at DMI was shocked that they won. Westlake has made BOA Finals and State numerous times. When I heard that Westlake was going to DMI last year, I knew for sure they were going to win it. It's not a knock on the other bands that competed, but it's because how good Westlake is. -

I LOVE how the show opens. L.D. Bell is known for their excellent marching technique, so it's cool that it looks like they're doing a basics block during the beginning of the show. I can't wait to see the show progress as the season continues. Almost a month left until BOA Houston....I can't wait. -

Also.... So it doesn't seem like the TXBands is playing "favorites" on the website. If we're going to be posting videos of bands, we might as well put up everyone's. If Band A's video is on the website, a person from Band B will start complaining and be like, "Why isn't our video up there? That's not fair." It's best for everyone if the website stays neutral. Just my 2 cents. -
Slaughter house. I live in Angleton. 56-26 Ouch.

Richard Saucedo Steps Down As Cavaliers Brass Arranger/Composer Richard Saucedo has stepped down as the brass arranger for The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps. Richard has been an integral part of the design team for many years, and we wish to thank him for his dedication, as well as his amazing compositions. His contributions have helped to establish the Cavalier sound of this decade. Richard stated, "I have resigned my position as brass arranger so that I can spend more time with my family. This will also allow me to focus more on my teaching responsibilities at Carmel High School, as well as my concert band and orchestral writing projects." He also stated "There is not a better organization for young musicians and performers anywhere on the planet!" Richard has been with The Cavaliers since the year 2000 as brass arranger and composer. We wish Richard nothing but continued success in all of his future endeavors. http://www.cavaliers.org

2008 MARCHING SHOWS!!!!

Instead of noticing the huge $925, read the break down of what the band payment is actually being used for. The 925 dollars also includes ALL of the travel fees for the entire marching season. Including BOA Houston, San Antonio, Grand Nationals, UIL Region, Area, State and all of the football games. As much as they travel, call me crazy, but that's pretty cheap. My Houston, San Antonio, and Grand Nationals trip alone as a spectator last year cost me around 700-800 dollars--including tickets, restaurant food, fuel, hotel, and etc. -
