  1. I've ordered from Mr. Video before. Their quality pales in comparison to 800VideoExpress (and even Vestige Video, for that matter). Maybe they will be better for BOA? We'll see. But right now, I am very disappointed in the move. You'd think that with BOA & DCI as strategic partners, BOA would use Tom Blair Productions to produce the DVD's of their Regional & Grand National events. Tom Blair's work on the DCI DVD's/CD's has set the standard for the marching arts activity. There's a huge discussion on the BOA Forums. http://www.bands.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboa...forum=stu&omm=0
  2. Thoughts: (Houston) Block 1: Hendrickson pulls out of LaJoya and heads east for Houston. Pearland must have some bad luck with the performance draw. Once again, they will be one of the first bands to go on. Klein will most likely receive the highest score out of the first block. Should be good enough for top 10. Block 2: I'm wondering what Alvin has up their sleeve this year since they will be attending the Houston & Arlington Regionals. I've heard the program has made major strides lately. We'll see. The bands advancing to Finals out of this block will be Langham Creek & Cedar Park. Clear Lake also has a legit shot. Block 3: In my opinion, the toughest block of the day. Winston Churchill, Brazoswood, Cypress Falls, Lewisville & Friendswood all going at it. I'm especially looking forward to Friendswood...2003 4A State Silver Medalist & 2005 Texas 4A Honor Band Champion. Although they didn't so hot at the 2002 Huntsville Regional, Friendswood 2003 & 2004 was so much better than the band from '02. It would be GREAT to see a Texas 4A band in a BOA Regional Final. It doesn't happen often. Block 4: Clear Brook should grab a Finalist spot. I'm not sold on The Colony just yet. I hope they return to their glory days soon. They were one heck of a band in the 1990's-early 2000's. 2004 Huntsville Regional Class AAA Champion, James Bowie, & 2004 Grand National Finalist, Stephen F. Austin, will round out the top 10. Exhibition: Wow. It's about time! I've always wanted Willowridge to perform at a BOA competition. The most entertaining and best high school show band that I have ever seen. These kids are a class act as well. -------- (LaJoya) I'm not really familiar with the Valley bands, so I don't have much to say. It looks like this will be Harlingen's competition to lose. I hope Rio Grande City does well. A friend of mine is their drill designer. And, I'm interested to see how PSJA North does at this regional. They will be the first Valley band ever to attend BOA Grand Nationals.
  3. Houston & LaJoya Regional Prelims schedules have been posted.
  4. The 2005 Cavaliers show was based on the city of Chicago. Ladders were used to represent the "Great Fire of 1871" which killed 300 Chicago residents and left 90,000 homeless.
  5. With regret, The Cavaliers announce the retirement of long-time percussion caption head and designer Bret Kuhn, effective immediately. "Bret has accumulated an impressive record, starting with the corps in 1981 as a member and has maintained a solid relationship either as a member, technician, caption head or designer. His dedication to the corps and to the members is unparalleled in our recent history," said corps director Jeff Fiedler. In addition to his service with The Cavaliers, Kuhn is active in the metropolitan Chicago area as a teacher, clinician and performer. "When people ask me why I have done drum corps for so many years, I tell them I haven't (only that) I've done the Cavaliers. To me it was never drum corps, it was always family and friends, and the competition was always with ourselves and not other corps. This is where I believe you draw ultimate strength in subjective competition like drum corps," Kuhn wrote in a letter to members of the Cavaliers board of directors. While retiring from the day to day responsibilities of percussion writing, arranging and caption management, Kuhn still plans to serve as percussion instructor at the Cavaliers' summer camp program for high school students. Kuhn also commented that the 2005 summer was one of his most favorite teaching experiences because of the incredible attitudes and work ethic of The Cavaliers drum line. He especially thanks section leaders Garrett Scharton, Joe Hobbs, Michikazu Narita and Matt Bartosiewicz for the great examples that they set all summer long. Kuhn plans to follow up on the corps' progress by visiting throughout the year. The Cavaliers thank Bret for his tireless dedication to the organization and wish him the best of luck in all of his future endeavors. http://www.cavaliers.org/cgi-bin/news.pl?c...howstory&id=573
  6. Don't be nervous. It's a long off-season. They'll have a staff in place. The deadline for applications for the Corps Director position is September 9th. They'll be fine.
  7. I really want to say one thing about Spring 2002..... As a spectator, wow. After the Prelims performance at the BOA San Antonio Regional, you guys picked your heads up and ended the season on a high note. Placing 18th in Semifinals at a very very tough Grand Nationals is nothing to frown about. Especially, after the San Antonio performance.
  8. Ehh. I'll wait until everything (the rest of the staff) is confirmed. Even if most of the staff is leaving, there is no doubt in my mind that the Santa Clara Vanguard Board of Directors and Rick Valenzuela will find the best staff humanly possible for the organization. People over there aren't going to let such a historic corps go down the tubes. They aren't stupid.
  9. Just because their director is leaving? Eh. I'd wait until the 2006 season begins to make such thoughts.
  10. Just wondering... Since it was a sanctioned event last year, was there a difference at the competition when compared to a normal BOA Regional?
  11. So.... Why do some drum corps still fold? How can an organization afford electronics if they can't even field a corps anymore?
  12. The 2005 show has no melody and sounds like the 2002 & 2003 shows. It has its moments, but I'm not really a fan of it. Now, Blue Devils 2000 was sweet.
  13. I agree with the 1.55 gap. The Cavaliers were extremely dirty.

    SCV

Yeah, they also interviewed Ralph right after the afternoon competition at DCI San Antonio. He's taking the year off from drum corps to focus more on composing.
  15. College?? Texas is a hotbed for successful college teams.
  16. Click on the red arrow on the Clements HS section. Or, just click here. http://www.txbands.com/media/go?id=95 Hope that helped.
  17. Like the DCI Central Division competition several weeks ago, the upcoming Allentown, PA competition is also a two-day event. http://www.dci.org/tickets/view_event.cfm?...c1-3aa3525fa422 To make it fair, I think we should throw out the predictions that have already been sent it.
  18. The Astros continue to amaze me. Reminds me of last year? Definitely. Two months ago the 'Stros were one of the worst teams in the league. At one point they were 15-20 games below .500. Now, they are the Wild Card leader in the National League and are in playoff contention.
  19. http://www.txbands.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=166 Already discussed. I think the addition of the BOA St. Louis, MO & Atlanta, GA Super Regionals would be a great idea. But not the rest of the Regionals. It's way too many. And not a lot of people on here are familiar with them.

    SCV

Are you sure? When I saw SCV at San Antonio, they used Pearl, Adams, Vic Firth & Remo equipment. I didn't see Dynasty anywhere. Also, Dynasty is nowhere listed under the Vanguard sponsors section. The only Dynasty sponsorship is for the Vanguard Cadets brass section. http://www.scvanguard.org/about/sponsors.php
  21. Key Poulan was SCV's arranger in 2003 & 2004. 2003 = 5th 2004 = 3rd It's not him. It's the large amount of rookies, the turnover in staff during the offseason, and the mediocre visual package that is contributing to their struggle. Poulan is not the problem.
  22. Also, the cross during the hit in 'Russian Christmas Music'...that was beautiful.
  23. Yeah, you're right Rachel. Myron has been doing drill for a long long time.

    SCV

SCV isn't sponsored by Dynasty. That's the Blue Devils. I heard that it was a conflict between the company that Jim Casella is sponsored by (Innovative Percussion) and Vic Firth. SCV has been using Vic Firth sticks for years now. If this is true, it's really unfortunate that sponsorship has to get into way of things.
