2008 MARCHING SHOWS!!!!
mbui replied to the terminator's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
I absolutely agree. Some people talk about their 2007 show like they don't know to march and play at the same time. That's what L.D. Bell has always been known for. Marching and playing. People griped that L.D. Bell wasn't artistic enough in the early 2000's with all their marching and playing. And now, people gripe that they didn't play enough this past year. You really can't win with some folks. For me, hands down, L.D. Bell was the best sounding band at Grand Nationals. Yeah, Avon had "more notes/technical yada yada", but their sound nowhere matched the tone quality, balance, and intonation of L.D. Bell's. And...Bell's ensemble clarity, I can't get enough of it. I've always thought that if you're bringing out the emotion people, you're doing something right. -

Ding, ding, ding. I agree. Also, to those that think that woodwinds don't deserve to be on the field..... Watch Lassiter HS 1998 and Magic of Orlando 2002. Both groups did "The Wind and the Lion." I hate comparing drum corps to marching band and marching band to drum corps, but Lassiter really did do a much, much better job with the piece than the Magic of Orlando. And, regarding the statement about the pit covering woodwind parts more accurately...as a percussionist....*shudder*. I think I'll stick to an awesome woodwind run rather than one being done on a xylophone instead.

2008 BOA Regional & Grand Nationals
mbui replied to mbui's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I wish those bands were going to the Super Regional too. But of course, it is a little harder financially since it's a State year. And, I wish BOA would alternate the Super Regional site in Texas too. I remember when the Houston Regional was always the last BOA Texas Regional of the year back in the 1990s-early 2000s. I don't mind it in San Antonio, but a Super Regional at Reliant Stadium would be pretty rad and would be a major upgrade over the Alamodome. -

Yeah, the Grand Nationals DVD set includes the entire Grand National Finals awards ceremony, which also includes the montage that you're talking about. Prior to 2005, the music used during the montage was Aaron Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man." It was pretty awesome. It's better watching all of this in person at Grand Nationals though. The entire weekend is just amazingm and it leaves me speechless everytime. I highly recommend everyone to go to Nationals. You won't regret it. -

2008 MARCHING SHOWS!!!!
mbui replied to the terminator's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
I'm being dead serious on this one..... At The Woodlands HS (I'm pretty sure it's at The Woodlands, someone correct me if I'm wrong), they have a sign on their school parking lot, which they also use as their practice field, that says something to the effect of: "Band Practice Field. Car will be towed after 4pm due to band rehearsal." -
Really? It didn't seem excessive at all. Only two groups used his music. The entire Cadets show was music from Frank Ticheli, but only one other corps used Ticheli's music which was the Mandarins when they did 'Cajun Folk Songs.'

Whoa. You're missing out. Marching band wise----Spring's show in 2001 contained music from Bela Bartok's "Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celeste" and "Concerto for Orchestra." A VERY underrated show....one of my favorites from 2001. I can't find a video, but I highly recommend finding their Finals performance the 2001 BOA Houston Regional. Like someone said earlier, The Woodlands also did Bartok's "Concerto for Orchestra" in their 2006 "Hide and Seek" show. Another fantastic show. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9n0c1baYE9s...feature=related In drum corps, Star of Indiana did "Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celeste" in 1993. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxtHmX7sWoI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToT5MJY8F5w -

The BOA list of participants for 2008 was recently updated. -El Paso, TX Regional Championships have been dropped. -Ronald Reagan HS pulls out of the Houston Regional. -The Woodlands HS pulls out of the San Antonio Super Regional. All information can be found at: http://www.musicforall.org/Programs/Regionals/ -
My thoughts exactly. The user says they're from Avon, Indiana. The band that placed second to L.D. Bell at Grand Nationals. I hope it's not sour grapes. To even question if L.D. Bell deserved the National Title after placing 1st in Prelims and Semis at Grand Nationals is ridiculous. Topic will be closed.

I couldn't disagree more. That's one thing that turns me off about the drum corps activity. The ego. Yes, drum corps is great, but so is marching band. Marching bands do not "suck" in comparison to drum corps. If a drum corps gets an idea from a marching band, so what? I'll admit it, I love marching band more than drum corps. I get more of an emotional attachment from marching band shows than I do with drum corps. Did you know that the Cavaliers drill designer in 1995 designed the drill for Spring HS in 1993 when they won BOA Grand Nationals? Drill designer, Greg Poklacki, used a lot of elements from Spring's show for the Cavaliers. Does that mean that Spring 1993, one of the most legendary shows to ever be put on the field, sucks? If a drum corps is getting ideas from marching band, again, please read my post from earlier---the designers and teachers that are in the upper echelon of BOA are the SAME ones that are designing all these shows in DCI. It's all the same people. You're going to see similar ideas. Are upper echelon corps in DCI better than the upper echelon bands you see at BOA Grand Nationals? Absolutely. But, are you really going to sit there and tell me that all drum corps, even the lower level World Class Corps, are better than the upper echelon marching bands that you see in BOA? This is no disrespect whatsoever to these corps, but I guess you have to be blunt and realistic to prove a point.
-
These days in drum corps, you will see a lot of high school marching band influence in DCI and vice versa. Why? Because some of the top high school band educators and show designers teach or design shows in DCI. Just look up any staff list from a bunch of drum corps and you will see that a lot of them teach/design for a high school marching band, especially in the upper echelon of BOA. Kevin Ford - Tarpon Springs HS, FL head director, Richland HS, TX drill designer, Blue Stars drill designer Mitch Rogers - Stephen F. Austin HS, TX drill designer, former drill designer for Plymouth Canton EP, MI, Bluecoats drill designer Key Poulan - Santa Clara Vanguard music arranger and music arranger for marching bands across the country Richard Saucedo - Carmel HS, IN head director, Cavaliers brass arranger Frank Sullivan - Tarpon Springs HS, FL music arranger, Blue Stars music arranger Matt Harloff - Avon HS, IN assistant director, Carolina Crown brass tech Aaron Guidry - Crossmen music designer, Broken Arrow HS, OK music designer, former Ronald Reagan HS, TX music designer Wayne Downey - Blue Devils brass arranger, The Woodlands HS, TX music tech J.D. Shaw - Phantom Regiment brass arranger and arranger for numerous marching bands across the country Michael Klesch - Carolina Crown brass arranger, Stephen F. Austin HS, TX music arranger, Cedar Park HS, TX music arranger Pete Weber - Santa Clara Vanguard drill designer and drill designer for numerous marching bands across the country Don Hill - The Woodlands HS, TX music arranger, L.D. Bell HS, TX music arranger, former music arranger for Plymouth Canton EP, MI, Glassmen brass arranger Just to name a few. I could go on and on.

L.D. Bell, The Woodlands, Marcus, Richland, Stephen F. Austin, Haltom, James Bowie...anyone? -
Someone posted on Drum Corps Planet that the Crossmen received an 83.30 tonight, although the Tennessee contest was rained out after their performance. It's an unofficial score, but if it holds true....GOOD for the Crossmen. I bet they performed like they were pissed and had a chip on their shoulder after being hosed by the judges last night in Charlotte with a 3 point drop back in the 79's, after being above 80.00 for over a week now.
-
Yup, and I thought Richland did "Hummingbrrd" better than the Bluecoats too.
-
This isn't about corps "stealing from marching band", but I'm just throwing this out there since a lot of Cedar Park people are talking about The Cadets and the similarities.... Your 2008 show is exactly the same music that Stephen F. Austin HS did in 2005. Aaron Copland's "Grohg Ballet" Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" & "Medea's Dance of Vengeance" Grohg was SFA's opener, Adagio was their ballad and Medea was their closer.

Just my opinion but.... I thought SCV should have been sixth at least or even as high as fourth. You could tell SCV came to play last night. Their closer is a little too anticlimactic, so hopefully there will be some tweaks to Cloudburst as the season progresses. The Bluecoats are good, but their overall design and show programming leaves more to be desired. They utilize the boxing theme really well, but the design itself is a little bland. I think SCV will end up above Bluecoats once all is said and done at World Finals. As for The Cadets, the performance felt flat last night and it just didn't have that extra push to put them over the top. They march and play well, but like the Bluecoats, the design leaves more to be desired. Also, it seems like they watered down a lot of Vesuvius compared to the early season version. Vesuvius is an aggressive and angry piece. I wish they put that type of emotion into the arrangement and performance. Then again, The Cadets show is the complete opposite of aggressive and angry.
