[Major Event] UIL State Contest
connorjewell replied to Xenon's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
So bands who don't do BOA, like Duncanville, shouldn't even bother having a guard? I just don't understand the judging system, I'm not trying to challenge you or anything.. -

Yeah, the rubric says it, but that doesn't mean it usually happens. Especially since UIL likes to hire judges who aren't marching band people. -

Yeah, it doesn't say anything about colorguard. So technically, there could be a band without a colorguard and they could still get a high score? Doesn't make much sense to me.. -

Wow, Cedar Park kids are getting annoying... And we all know that the UIL judging system is purely based on execution does not take into account the difficulty of the show. BOA does. We know this. Let's move on please. -

As a trumpet player, I don't claim to be any kind of a colorguard expert, but does colorguard have absolutely no effect on the overall score of a group in UIL? As a band person, I actually found my eyes watching the Churchill colorguard the entire show for prelims and finals! They are phenomenal. But it seems as though they were not rewarded at all. In finals, both visual judges gave Churchill a tenth place score. So my question is, in UIL does colorguard really effect the overall score of the group at all? -

Area B Marching Band Contest

I still think that a vast majority of the time that concert band success translates into success on the field in UIL. One cannot argue that bands who do well in the state honor band results are almost always at the top in marching band music as well. This discussion is really going to make me root for Flower Mound tomorrow. -

Wow, Marco, I have to say that hearing this come from you of all people I was surprised. I know you know your stuff, but I'm sorry but you are most definitely mistaken. Flower Mound was 4th in the state honor band results. I think that almost all band directors would agree that great concert bands do translate into good sounds on the marching field. At a high school, having a good top band is the foundation for a program that is respected in all aspects. Just look at the top honor bands in the state this past summer: 1. Duncanville 2. Marcus 3. Coppell 4. Flower Mound Flower Mound is up there with the gods of UIL marching band. Not to mention Langham Creek, who won state honor band in 2006, and they do very well at UIL marching band competitions. So, after all of this, I think it is clear that honor band success DOES indeed translate to sounding great on the field. And jbroomas, yes, they don't only judge music at UIL marching, but there are more music judges than marching judges and music is DEFINITELY a priority for UIL judging. They care about music more than anything else visually on the field. -

Don't fly past Flower Mound with your extremely generic statements. Their honor band was 7th in the state a few months ago. They sound terrific on the field. -

To be Grand National Champs you have to care about the judges. That is necessary. And they do. And that is why they win. They don't win because they don't care about what the judges want. Lol. That makes no sense. -

Richland had a very cool show. The tarp was a neat effect. They were a little sloppy but I'm pretty sure they will clean it up before Area. I was talking to some Richland band kids and they said their main goal this year was to medal at State. That's why they are not doing any BOA competitions this year.. -

Some interesting notes.. After prelims, Flower Mound was fourth overall. They jumped two spots in finals. But, 2nd and 3rd after prelims, Mansfield and Legacy, both scored lower in finals than in prelims. If Legacy, 3rd in prelims, 4th after finals, would've have gotten the same score in finals as they did in prelims (88.8), they would have finished 2nd overall. Also, the two top colorguards of the day, after prelims and finals, share the same instructor. Eric Babula is the colorguard instructor and Flower Mound and Legacy. What a good day for him. Lol. -

Glenn Fugett, former director of Westlake, current director of Legacy, is not just a DCI "judge". Yes, he does some judging, but he is the Percussion Chairman for DCI. And as his student, I have to say I disagree that "it gets to his head like crazy." He is a very creative, modern, and innovative band director. And while on the topic of judges, there is no doubt the judging at DMI is always questionable.. -

Thanks for not judging us by the ignorance of one member. As a new school, that is the last thing we need. And congradulations to everyone that made finals. It was an amazing experience!
