  1. I'm pretty sure the judge is pretty much restricted to the sideline just like in DCI so they're actually judging the pit more than they are the battery. There should be two perc judges, but there's no way UIL would hire an additional judge just for that. Hebron in 9th is kinda pushing it, but Cedar Ridge in 2nd is too far? I thought the music they played this year was pretty difficult and clean, and their pit is usually pretty killer.
  2. I mean I really wouldn't go as far as to call any biases as these kids all work hard and the judges are all people I'm familiar with and respect. It's just that the simple truth is that these ordinals reflect how competitive the percussion activity as a whole is in Texas. The top 4 in percussion don't really surprise me and Marcus winning percussion again isn't that surprising.
  3. Judges preference. More judges preferred Hebron over Vandegrift (pretty sure this is right). In BOA the tie is determined by the GE score.
  4. I mean that's what happens they rely off ordinals to score them. Percussion being worth 1/7 of the total score is pretty much the deciding factor on whether or not a group will get screwed or not. Although, the percussion scores looked pretty accurate this year and in 2022 so it's just unfortunate how they score in UIL.
  5. Probably one of the hardest and most well executed music books to date. I think if Hebron keeps this level of music and ups their visual demand they'll literally be unstoppable. Thank you to Hebron for providing the closet thing to the 2000 Cadets.
  6. WGI does not have a good conflict of interest policy. There are multiple educators that judge both within the SCPA and WGI circuit and many others that have taught members within those programs. People such as Scott Johnson, Mike McIntosh, and Tom Rarick to name a few are heavily affiliated with members within the programs they judge.
  7. Markworth writes everything now for the band.
  8. I would need to see the recaps for finals if that's what you're referring to, but achievement and content go hand and hand. That's why if a drumline played 8's they wouldn't score very high for achievement even though it's clean. I have not seen their show music in person or on video, so I don't know how difficult their music is compared to their standstill show, but I have heard a decent chunk of the top 14's percussion and it's fierce out there. I don't doubt the judging as I agree with the placements that Brooks and Romanowski decided as I probably would have said the same thing, at least for the groups that I've been able to sample. Just to clarify Coppell's percussion is probably pretty clean on the field, it's likely just their show music isn't as hard compared to the rest of the top 14.
  9. Coppell does both a percussion show and their show music during the competition season. I'm pretty sure that their percussion show is way harder than their show music and they likely spend more time on their percussion show. If both were hard it'd be pretty hard to get either one clean by the end of the season.
  10. Thanks, I forgot Vandegrift moved up a division in 2016. It's actually so impressive how much they've managed to accomplish since 2009. The only thing left is to win San Antonio (hopefully this Saturday).
  11. For 6a I think they are the youngest school. However, back when there was no 6a, and 5a was the largest, I think CTJ is technically the youngest school to make finals for the highest division.
  12. For bigger events like state or a super regional, they typically get a different panel of judges for prelims and finals.
  13. Wow. Percussion being its own score really killed CTJ's chances of making finals.
  14. Congrats to SFA. Insane improvement since Conroe.
