  1. It's an absolutely awesome show. Seeing it live at Area I was a real treat, and getting to see my 12 year old trumpeters reaction to it was priceless! We were blown away. Would love to see them make finals.
  2. UIL SMBC rules say that if there are 20-29 bands at Area then 10 qualify for finals, so we'll still have 10 finalists, at least.
  3. I think we'll get 25 or 26 bands to Area, with 10 or 11 coming from 23 and 15 from 27.
  4. Hard to argue with your Top 6/7. I do think Katy is being overlooked a little considering that they were less than a point behind JET at Berry and finished well ahead of LC and Ranch, with no ordinals below 4th. This Katy show is improving drastically week to week and still on an upward trajectory. It's all good though, we're splitting hairs and all of these bands are great. It's gonna come down to who executes in crunch time.
  5. Katy's show still has a good bit of room to improve from last week. Finals run wasn't our best but it was just the second time they've run the whole show. All of the other bands will improve too of course so it will be interesting to see where everyone is after another week of work.
  6. I know Katy got third. I believe behind Clear Falls and New Caney. Edit: Should have specified that those were obviously omitting North Shore, who doesn't place at their event.
  7. That's a whole other level, but it would be fun to go in that general direction, hah! When they played their halftime show in Katy in '21 they got a standing ovation from our crowd.
  8. As always, this competition is going to be really tough, with so many great bands and especially with such a strong Top 3-4. It seems to me that 4/5 through 9/10 could go in just about any order because they're all so close. It's a shame they're all fighting for 1 spot, maybe 2, depending on who you consider locks. It's nice to see Katy in the conversation in that second group. Numbers are way up in the program, even from last year, and they've been on a good run of making the finals. We'll see how it comes together this year, but I think we'll be pretty good. I'm looking forward to seeing the great shows!
  9. Congrats to the great bands that made State! I'm so proud of our Katy band for continuing to reach new heights as a program. They've made three straight Area finals which has never been done before at Katy. We've gotten better each year, but the bar keeps getting raised by the phenomenal programs in our Area. We're definitely underdogs in this realm, but our kids embrace it and keep pushing forward. Bridgeland, Cy-Fair, Cy Woods, Tompkins, and Seven Lakes...we wish y'all the best!
  10. I can say that Katy had their best run of the season, and I've seen all of them.
  11. Thanks for posting! Katy has made tremendous strides in just the few days since that run and are trending in a good way for Saturday. It's an incredibly tough Area to advance from and it's cool to see our kids in the conversation.
  12. I'm excited to see how Katy High will stack up in such a loaded field. Making the top half would be awesome, but that's a big ask considering the field. It's gonna be fun to watch all of the great bands performing right in our backyard. I think folks will enjoy our show, if nothing else. Gershwin, Ticheli, Bonnie Tyler, Ace of Base...what's not to like, hah!
  13. Katy HS - "Mixed Signals" Rhapsody in Blue - Gershwin An American in Paris - Gershwin Total Eclipse of the Heart - Bonnie Tyler
  14. Admittedly, I've only been closely following competition marching for just over a year now, but those Hebron and The Woodlands performances...my word. Freaking incredible.
  15. Here's the Katy show. It's a very young, motivated group (especially after losing out on a tie for a spot at State) and they're improving. This was the first Katy band to make back-to-back Area finals. Our oldest will get one more shot at State...with little bro next time!
  16. Congrats to JET and Seven Lakes! I know y'all will represent the district well.
  17. I am so proud of our kids, they were awesome, but finishing 6th when 5 go... dang...so excruciatingly close. Congrats to those that made it!
  18. As a Katy band parent, I appreciate y'all! They've added a ton to the show since BOA (heck they didn't even play the whole show there...and the ending is unique and dramatic), and they've added visuals to the completed show since finishing well at the Katy Marching Festival and Battle of the Berry. They're musically strong despite being largely Freshmen and Sophs. The draw was kind and they're reaching the peak of what they've got. I'm just hoping they'll put their best run out there and make a good impression.
  19. Katy's 2022 show is titled "Thread of the Fates" featuring music from Berlioz, Mahler, and Billie Eilish. The kids are excited and hungry after last year's appearance in the Area I finals.
  20. So proud of our Katy band for making the finals and playing their two best shows of the year yesterday. They executed their show to practical perfection and entertained along the way. As an aside, I am admittedly new to this, but these results don't make any sense at all. Aren't the judges supposed to be checked for relative consistency? Some of the rankings within categories in a round and then also from Prelims to Finals are wildly different. Very odd to say the least. And with the scoring system in place, those...oddities...make a huge difference. Our results were within an expected and consistent range in both rounds, but several other bands' results just make zero sense. area-21_6A Area I.pdf
  21. I'm coming to realize how lucky we've been with Katy's football schedule, seeing the quality of halftime shows we've seen: The Woodlands, Cy Woods, Tompkins, Seven Lakes, Cinco, JET...not bad. Saw JET last night after our game. They certainly look ready, as does our crew. Won't be long now!
  22. So, if I'm looking at it right, at least 5 of the final 8 performing today in Region 27 would need to make 1's in order to open up a 4th spot for State. I'm excited for the competition this Saturday and can't wait to see some great shows. I have a Freshman in the Katy band and have enjoyed my first run through marching season as a parent. Man, do these kids work hard! I'm actually in awe of what all of these programs are able to pull off. I know our band is under the radar, and that's cool, but I think we have a highly entertaining show that the kids are executing at a very high level...I'm excited for more folks to get to see it.
