  1. I will weigh in and say that it bothers me that a director doesn't want their kids to watch their 5th place finish in the State Finals because they'll "nitpick" the performance and "ruin" their memories of the season. I know all the bands strive to win, but a 5th place finish is something to be very proud of. A director suggesting otherwise by those types of comments is troubling to me.
  2. Who keeps official stats on band sizes? Seriously, at the State Contest, I'm thinking Newman Smith has the largest band. Statewise, I have heard Plainview claim to be the largest 4A band in the state with 350+. Whether they really have that many or not, who knows. But their youtube videos sure make 'em look big: I do know Allen has the largest high school band program in the state with over 600 (but they only march about 500).
  3. No kidding? I wasn't aware of that. Does the petition to "stay down" have to be turned in the same time as the petition to "play up"? Also, word from people on the committee is that they are going to be real hard about granting petitions to play up. they think the only ones they'll even consider are the Eagle Pass and Laredo schools (extreme travel), Cy Ranch (turned in 1997 and has asked up via the 8 team district rule). Per some other websites, if those are the only approved "opt ups" the smallest 5A school will be Smithson Valley at 2052 - largest 4A Granbury at 2046.5
  4. lol NOBODY outside the Realignment Committee knows who will be 5A or 4A next year. heck, even the people on that committee don't really know for certain because they haven't decided which applications to "play up" they are going to approve. All of this "the AD said..." or "I know someone that said..." stuff is b.s. yes, one can make educated guesses. Legacy turned in 2379 on Snapshot Day and thus almost certainly will be 5A. However, until 2/1/10, nothing is for certain.
  5. I'll be second - even though I have only seen a handful of these bands. My 10 finalists, in no particular order. Saginaw H.S. Mansfield Legacy H.S. Frisco Wakeland H.S. Carrolton Newman Smith H.S. Mesquite Poteet H.S. Forney H.S. Pflugerville Hendrickson H.S. Dripping Springs H.S. Friendswood H.S. Galena Park H.S. I guess if i had to put money on a winner, I'd pick Poteet - defending champ deserves respect.
  6. Just a mistake. The guy who pointed out they were in had an asterick and I picked it up when I cut and pasted.
  7. Think we got 'em all rounded up on another thread - in no particular order, 2009 4A State Participants (by Area): Area A: Azle H.S. * Saginaw Boswell H.S. * Wolfforth Frenship H.S. Saginaw H.S. * Del Valle H.S. Area B: Fort Worth Southwest H.S. Mansfield Legacy H.S. Frisco Wakeland H.S. Carrolton Newman Smith H.S. Area C: Mesquite Poteet H.S. ** Forney H.S. Waxahachie H.S. Area D: Pflugerville Hendrickson H.S. ** Dripping Springs H.S. ** Austin LBJ H.S. Buda Hays H.S. Area E: Brenham H.S. * Waller H.S. * Area F: Friendswood H.S. ** Pearland Dawson H.S. Galena Park H.S. Area G: Roma H.S. ** Corpus Christi Calallen H.S. Kingsville King H.S. * Edcouch Elsa H.S. Alice H.S. * Finalists from 2007 who didn't make it back: Austin Connally H.S. Aledo H.S. Cedar park Vista Ridge H.S. Sherman H.S. Dickenson H.S. Let the prognasticating begin! (EDIT: One star for 2007 State Contest participant, two stars for finalists) (EDIT: Added Del Valle, added Dickenson to not returning list)
  8. Based on the ADM numbers turned in on October 15th, Mansfield, Mansfield Legacy and Mansfield Timerview ought to be 5A unless the cutoff jumps dramatically. Mansfield Summit is on the bubble but likely will end up on the 4A side of the line. It is very close and will depend on how many schools that asked to "opt up" the UIL chooses to grant.
  9. Your welcome - I enjoyed doing it. I am not a marching professional like many on this site, but I was in band through college and played a little professionally before I realized it's too hard to make a living that way. Been watching marching bands for a LONG time.... I have to say the one band out of this contest I was tickled to death made it was Southwest. Dang, all they did was play their horns great and march great. I thought their size would be held against them (I'll admit it was in my rankings), but it wasn't by the judges that matter. Good job Southwest!
  10. No, as was pointed out on the other thread, Legacy opened as a 5A school in 2007 - marched as 5A non-varsity in 2007. Go look at 2007 Region 5 marching contest results for proof.
  11. I think you have to consider Legacy, who finished ahead of Wakeland at Area B. heck, I think Newman Smith, Legacy and Wakeland all make finals.
  12. Someone said above Southwest wasn't in the 2007 Area B marching contest either. I don't know if that is true or not. But if it is true, then yeah - all four bands advancing to State were not in this contest two years ago. Talk about crashing a party!
  13. In fact, go to this site: http://www.uilforms.com/marchrptuilpublic.asp Select "2007" -> "Region 5" -> "Region 5 Marchng - Mansfield ISD Stadium..." - click "Get Report" About halfway down, you'll see Legacy clearly shown as a non-varisty 5A school.
  14. No, Legacy opened as a 5A school in 2007. The band marched JV, sure, and the football team played a JV schedule. But the school was in District 4-5A. In the 2008 realignment, Legacy dropped to 4A. Here is a link which clearly shows Legacy's volleyball team in the 5A playoffs in 2007=2008 season: http://uil.utexas.edu/athletics/archives/v...5A_bracket.html Please post a link that shows Legacy a 4A school for the 2007-2008 school year. Timberview was a 5A school that year as well.
  15. Didn't mean to suggest they did - but Legacy was a 5A school the last year the Area B contest was held - in other words, three of the four bands that pushed Aledo out were not in this contest last year.
  16. Not if you were at the contest. Newman Smith and Mansfield Legacy, two former 5A bands, pushed them out, along with new school Frisco Wakefield (finally) Southwest. Aledo was 6th, I believe.
  17. What a heck of a contest. I really liked Sherman's show. All Southwest did was play their horns great and march great. I know Newman Smith was first and Legacy was second. I don't know any of the other order of finsih. Someone will post it I'm sure.
