Currently several of the El Paso bands are preparing for the New Mexico Tournament of Bands Contest which will be held on 11/05/2011... With Del Valle and Bel Air not attending. Del Valle is preparing for the UIL State Contest and Bel Air is currently in San Antonio for the BOA event. -

jmj, do not underestimate any of the El Paso bands, they are really coming off strong this marching season. With all the bands advancing from Region 22 I expect to see true contenders from EP-Coronado, EP- Hanks, EP-Bel Air, EP-Americas, EP-Franklin, who knows maybe all 5 of these will advance! -

Thank one of your newest band directors: Ivan De La Cruz for them, he was one of the main reasons why Bel Air (El Paso) started using Contras back a few years ago. -

Dan here is what happened, The mistake was a misinterpretation of the rules regarding "judges' preference." In UIL there is a rule that states if a band receives a ranking of 1,2,or 3 from at least 2 music judges and 1 marching judge, they will advance to the SMBC regardless of their final placement. Del Valle came in 5th overall but had a ranking of 2 and 4 in music, and a 3 in marching. ( Warning-- I have not seen the actual recaps-- this is hearsay, but from reliable sources!) The contest administrator apparently thought that since the AREA was advancing 4 bands to state, the ranking of "4" in music would count towards this policy. That was the mistake-- it should not have counted, the rules clearly state " 3 or higher". However, during the challenge time, where mistakes can be challenged and rectified before becoming official, no one questioned this. And so the results became "official" and were announced. About an hour later someone, apparently from the Austin office of UIL, clarified the rule, and Del Valle was informed they were not advancing. But an update from Uil, they had advanced Del Valle, which the band drew the 11th spot for preliminary at SMBC

In update to the UIL Area Final Results... In a late breaking development, Del Valle's advancement to state has been, at least temporarily, rescinded! The issue came down to a misinterpretation of the UIL rules regarding judges' preference. HERES THE OFFICIAL ARTICLE: AMERICAS BAND DISQUALIFIED Americas High School will not march for the state marching band championship next week because it used a student with failing grades during the qualification rounds to the tournament. Officials of the Socorro Independent School District confirmed late Thursday that the Univeristy Interscholastic League the body regulates sports, fine arts and other academic competitions in Texas - had told Americas it could no longer perform in the State Marching Band Contest on Tuesday at the Alamodome in San Antonio. This is very unfortunate, " said Tony Baca, socorro's assistant superintendent for secondary schools. "The band officials have met with the students, and the school has written a letter to send home to parents informing them of the situation." Baca said a student, who was not identified knew of the failing grades but still decided to play during both the area and regional qualifying rounds of the state tournament. He said the Americas band directors did not know of the failing grades, Baca said. As soon as the school learned of the ineligible student, they contacted UIL... it was self reporting," Baca added. "The school spent most of the day on the phone with UIL. We still don't know of any disciplinary action toward the student." Americas qualified for the state tournament by being one of the top three bands in the regional tournament last weekend. The fourth place band Bel Air High will now take its place. "There were a lot of people cheering in the halls when we knew we were going," said Alyssa Hernandez, as senior flute player at Bel Air. "We are sad for the Americas band because we know they were ready, but at the same time we are very excited to be going." Bel Air band director David Waters said his students were practicing for the Bands of America tournament also in San Antonio this weekend, so they will be ready for the UIL tournament Tuesday. "Our show is better than it was a week ago, and we are very confident," Waters said. "Hopefully we can go out there and represent El Paso well."
